yeh_buddy
Last night I noticed one of my older males was dying so I moved him to an Isolation Tank so he wouldn't get eaten by the other community tank members. During the night I noticed two female fighters hanging around his Isolation Tank, but thought nothing of it. When I got up this morning I noticed that the male had died as I suspected he would, but more noticebly the two females that were hanging around his isolation tank had actually jumped in there at one stage during the night and were siting next to him on either side. They werent picking him to peices, just sitting there next to him. When I tried to remove the male's body, both females protested by jumping into the net and trying to head butt the body away from the net. I have never actually seen this sort of protective behaviour(if thats what it was) and I was wondering if anyone else has experienced behaviour like this before. I thought it was a moving experience, that proves to some extent that fish mourn and understand death.

fish_fingers
Yes they were Siamese Fighter fish, sorry I didnt state that more obviously. No so, it's in the Anabantoid section so should be obvious and also the previous mention of the female fighters. Sorry to hear about your loss, I am very interested by this....have any other breeders or keepers seem this before?
yeh_buddy
Thanks, very sad to loose him but it proved to be a very interesting experience. I do hope to hear from other keepers that may have shared a similar experience, or even to get thoughts of other people. :bounce:
diver21
yes i had this happen too, i had a male in with 3-4 females and the male developed a tumor on his side which hindered him from swimming upright so the other females held him upright against the tank until he finally died
