aquanaut
I have read lots of times what people feed their fish but have never seen people saying they feed maggots. I know they are used alot for coarse fishing so wondered if anyone fed them to their fish?
phoenix44
i suppose you could. I used to feed fish wax moth larvae - so maggots shouldn't be any different. what made you think of maggots? lol =)
Aaron-Betta
I feed small maggots to some of my fish, but not very often. (don't usually make a habit of having flies around long enough to breed)
Stella
Definitely they can be used, it is just the ickiness factor that puts people off. Charles Mitchell, the 'whitebait farmer', hangs dead possums suspended over his ponds so the maggots fall in as free fish food.
aquanaut
what made you think of maggots? lol Dunno! I was lying in bed thinking about getting up as im on night shift tonight, last night woohoo, then back to nz! Anyway i was thinking of fish food when i was laying there, and i thought of coarse fishing and how fish love maggots. It got me to thinking if people used them or not as i thought (and i'm probably wrong) that they are full of protein. Stella that does sound damn yuck but very practical i guess! I wonder if my newt would eat them?
Ira
We feed fish all kinds of larvae. Just fly larvae are harder and smellier to produce. No reason you can't feed them to your fish though.
Caryl
They love maggots. I used to sit a bit of cats meat in the sun a while then wait for the maggots to hatch.

Luke*
Charles Mitchell, the 'whitebait farmer', hangs dead possums suspended over his ponds so the maggots fall in as free fish food. yea this is a great idea.. free fish food and removes one of nz's biggests pests from our forrests, win-win
Caryl
Sid Smithies used to hang dead rabbits over his fish ponds for the same reason. the cat food was required pre-Bud
