SilverBlade86
Me and a few friends are keen on going fishing somewhere around. Now how does one go about this? I was told the Waimac (however you spell it) is a good spot, but do we have to apply for licenses? Or are there better spots to go to? Navarre
Depends on what you want to catch. A good days fun is to hire a charter like Mainland Fishing Adventures and go sea fishing...notthe cheapest but certainly more fish than you can shake a stick at. If you wnat trout or salmon then you need a licence and some people even get a guide. Waimak is in flood at moment so best talk to a local fishing club and go from there. yeeahboy
You could venture around the Taylors mistake cliffs & throw a line out there, (if you dont mind the occasional snag). There is a few fish around, in the summer i go snorkling along the cliffs with a spear, I occasionly get lucky but there pretty quick
SilverBlade86
Well, we don't mind anything really, as long as its edible. Taylor's Mistake sounds awesome. Where are the cliffs at? Do we need a license?
alanmin4304
No licence required for fishing in the sea. Off the warf at Diamond Harbour can be good at times
yeeahboy
Just walk around track on south side of taylors mistake (which leads to boulder bay). then just vere off track and find a nice spot, you can get right down to sea level, dont worry its not hard there are plenty of paths from the main track
JK
what can you catch down that way yeahboy? My wife is draggin me down to see the rellies over christmas and i usually use that time to chase kings out at the barrier or around coro or the far north. Maybe worthwhile bringing a rod down with me?
yeeahboy
Sorry man i know nothing about types of fish around there, nothing spectacular like kings. I dont do much fishing just snorkling around and jumping off the cliff jumps for a bit of fun. theres always plenty of fisherman around. Maybe someone with a bit more knowledge could shed some light. SilverBlade86
Good stuff. will probably try Taylor's Mistake during the weekend if the weather is good. Also what are the laws there for open fires? We probably are hoping to cook (if we are lucky) some fish there. Of course we'll keep dispose of the rubbish properly. yeeahboy
Yea im sure you'll be alright with a fire on the beach, just check when you get there if there is any signs saying "no fire"

SilverBlade86
Are barracuda's edible? And what's kawhai? Are they edible as well?
herefishiefishie
They call them aussie salmon here lol. Not bad. Never tried Barracuda. I reckon if you went night fishing there you would catch cod there to. I have caught cod at different rocky points around ChCh. repto
barracuda have a parasitic worm that lives in their flesh, pretty disgusting when you see them crawl out of a fillet??craybait up this way.
SilverBlade86
Oooo, I have eaten that sometimes tasted awesome heh. Also ... uhh ... how does one kill a fish? I read online about some method that involves putting something sharp into somewhere above the fish's head. Or should I just chop the head off?
