bedazzled
I have noticed while I have been perving at pics online of tanks overseas that quite a few of them have shrimps in them. Do we get fresh water shrimps in waterways here? I think we do... Would they be able to be acclimatised to a tropical set up or would it be too warm? Thanks
Caryl
I seem to remember previous threads that said they do not cope with warmer temps. Might be wrong though
bedazzled
Cool thanks caryl I will try searching for other threads on it. They looked so cool in the pics I saw of tanks overseas
Dixon1990
Some manage to acclimatised to cooler tropical tanks around 20-25.
bedazzled
Some manage to acclimatised to cooler tropical tanks around 20-25. Mine sits at around 24-25 so I might just go and catch a couple and try them lol not looking foward to getting in the river though, will be freezing!! Dixon1990
YOu have to aclimatise them from river temp to tank temp over more than a week though, So best to setup another tank full of river water for a week or maybe just a bucket with a small heater? Afrikan
Yeah with the time of year they may not settle in so well to warmer conditions, best time to acclimatize them is summer time.. where waters are a little warmer in their natural environment. Keep us posted tho 8)
bedazzled
oh! Maybe I should wait til summer to try this little experiment then The other tank I have is warmer (fry tank) and I have no spare heater at the moment
enzoom1
the truth is, if you do catch some of the new zealand freshwater shrimp and try to acclimatise them to a tropical water climate they will likely die way earlier than they would if you just kept them in a coldwater tank. my advice would be to just keep them in a coldwater tank, but what the heck, you could give acclimatising them a go
livingart
had some in my tanks for almost 2 years now originally used for feeders some have survived also feeding live mysis but they don't seem to last long
bedazzled
Unfortunately I don't have a cold water tank and I don't see myself getting one in the near future I might just leave it for now and think about it again when the weather is warmer

spoon
i have 1 living in a tropical brackish tank was meant to be a feeder
livingart
i always acclimatise the feeder fish no, they were dropped straight in if you want them to survive well i would recommend what has been said in this thread as to warming them up they eat a little flake, but in the wild they are detritus feeders ie: they are good for cleaning up leftover bits even fish excreta
bedazzled
ie: they are good for cleaning up leftover bits even fish excreta This is why I was keen to try some And I think they look cool
Captain Conkout
Hutt Petts in Lower Hutt, Wellington has a tropical cray. He is a fair size tho and lives alone... I believe this was a rescue and was sourced from a commercial fishery. But shows they are out there - somewhere.
