illegal to sell, illegal to buy, illegal to keep. Even if you are a zoo and they are in a containment facility.

Official reason is that they had a strain of salmonella- 'Mt Pleasant' - that was not previously in NZ. (it was though and is recorded as such). There are 100's of strain of salmonella and you are more likely to catch it from a terrapin (meat eating turtle) than a large herbiverous lizard with the interlect of a 3 year old child.

They were destroyed as a deterent to smuggling, even though the seller was not prosecuted, kept the coin, and had no personal animals destroyed.

so they have a virus, fair enough then. They should be destroyed but KIM should of been prosicuted.

Not a virus- it is a bacteria. Every animal has bacteria present, so it is irrelevant, their reasoning was that it was not already present in NZ- but it was. Dodgy all round really.

Google search MAF, Iguana, New Zealand....interesting reading and good to see how our tax dollars are used, especially after MAF waited until people bought them to declare them illegal- no warnings or anything. If they made the call right away then no problem, but they waited, and waited, and waited. You pay peanuts.....

said igs had Mt Pleasant salmonella for purpose of proving they were smuggled (new organism) then once erma decided they were illegal, then declared Mt Pleasant salmonella previously recorded in nz so no longer anew organism

and.....8 of the 14 taken and killed were actually Chinese Water Dragons (Physignathus coccinus). Both are green though and have long tails......even the zoo thought they wre iguanas. Lol.....

the darn good reason would probably be the introduction of disaeses that were not here before. Not really relevant in this case as said animals had their approval (MAF)and had been here for 18 months or more and living from one end of the country to the other.

imo there is no good reason that maf or whom ever should destroy the animals they seek and find quarantine and send them back to country of origin and if the smuggler is caught throw them in jail they deserve the punishment not the animals as they wouldn't be in the situation if it wasn't for the person BAN THE DEED NOT THE BREED!

PS: does any one know know why they do not send the animals back to there country of origin?

I'm guess cost, who pays to send it back?

Disease, don't want to introduce a foreign disease into the wild population eg something from NZ etc.

In some cases how would you know where the animal came from if it passed through several ports before reaching final destination.

They do sometimes send them back home, according to ERMA's new organisms incidents sumary "Arrangements were made with the Indonesian government for the return of one blue tree monitor." This was the same incident where "In December 2007 MAF destroyed 8 green iguana, 2 emerald green tree monitors, and 5 Chinese water dragons."

country of origin by that i mean there indigenous country im sure there indigenous government may or may not help to return the animal like what happened in the above post or may be even animal welfare Organizations i understand the need to protect from disease ect once captive your not meant to release into the wild any way so may be even indigenous zoo's may help but thats just cruel and senseless to me what happens if the particular species happens to be on the endangered list and some fool manged to get them this far? or even very slow breeders so even losing one is bad you never know what can turn up in nz or any were in the world for that matter

gotta agree with repto

i think it a good reason to stop the introduction of diseases to threaten our native reptiles

green iguana have been in nz for at least 14 years i know of,

if they have been here that long discovered or other wise wouldn't a disease have shown up? did one show up? or were they kept away from natives? sorry just find this story facinateing if they were here for so long with no ill effects why not leave well enough alone and ban more importing and make do with what made it here?

that stock of supposed babies that were sold, when dna tested were said to be unrelated so couldn't have been from 1 hatching

hence believed to be smuggled so efforts were made to get rid of them to prove a point to smugglers

sad to see the animals put down

sad to see the hobby go further underground

not a good public relations exercise all round

man that is horrible why not beardies axies firebelly newts ect? im sure all imports have potential for disease and the ability to cause harm to natives if they ever got away from captivity some how or some fool thought it would be funny to release them and see what happens or because they were bored even legal one's so why allow some to stay and destroy others? sounds like they pick and choose

is there any one maf has to answer to? like who sets the guidelines for maf? just curious to know who makes the rules and what kind of qualifications do they need to be a maf inspector? as ive seen in some posts that there have been some inspectors whom dont know a thing about the particular mineral vegetable or animal and just make a guess and say well i think? and it looks like? i have messaged maf to ask these questions but no answer yet so thought id ask here

Maybe its time to stop bringing up old wounds, there are people out there that got VERY hurt by all this, these wernt just lizards to some people they were there prized pet,

are you trying to put people off from every telling you anything about what they have, or what they can get etc...

do you want maf to read this and get every thing band, beardies, newts, axies etc.. i think not...

it dose pay to think before you type, not trying to piss ne1 off but felt something had to be said (and not pointed at one person) but come on and have a heart about the whole thing
