FineArtist
I talked with a storeperson who told me they only feed their fish once every two days ... I am using TetraMin Tropical Flakes and have just the general range of common fish, My question to everyone is - how often do you feed your fish? Cheers Jo
evilknieval69
I feed mine once a day, about 5 times a week (if that makes sense)
Cheesejawa
twice is easyer, once in the morning once at night as the middle of the day is hard because of school/work

Cheesejawa
Mine get fed once or twice a week. u must have skinny fish!!!!
evilknieval69
No, because they dont need heaps of food in a well established planted tank. Infact caryl most likely has the healthiest fish here.... Infact, my community tank (established planted tank) only gets fed flake food about 3 times a week, then live brine shrimp another 2 or 3 days. They dont get all that much food realy.... Cheesejawa
can they survive on microcritters only?
evilknieval69
probably not forever, but you could leave an established planted tank longer without food, than you could a bare tank. Caryls fish could probably go for a good two months before the first ones start to die (IMO)
Caryl
I can go away for 2 weeks without feeding them and they are fine. I have odessas and BNs breeding in there so they can't be too starved. The tank has been running many years now.
alanmin4304
With an established tank you are only sustaining them with baby fry you are trying to get them to grow as fast as possible so I could feed 4 to 6 times a day and have pilot lights so that they feed at night as well. FineArtist
how many hours would you leave the light on for? I am taking about the fluro one which came with the tank - which is under the lid
ryanjury
I feed my fish around 4-5times a day sometimes more little and often gets fish well conditioned fast and babies growing faster too However I might add I do have strick maintenance good filtration and I know how much to feed my fish as to not cause problems. Also all tanks have scavenger fish and all babies are in barebottom tanks and fed mostly microworms that stay alive for a few days if not eaten. I would recommend to a beginner 1-2 times daily only as much as your fish can eat in a couple of minutes. As for how many hours you turn your lights on it depends on if your tank is planted etc.. FineArtist
i have 4 different plants
ryanjury
I leave my lights on for 12 hours a day but that is probably too much, I'd probably start with 8 hours a day and see how it all goes if your plants dont grow and your getting no algae build up maybe increase it a bit, if algae and everything goes nuts maybe bump it back a bit. Some people only turn their lights on when they want to look at the fish but obviously if you have plants they need them.
alanmin4304
My plant tanks have the lights on 17 hrs/day but it depends on what type of plants, what strength of lighting and the depth of water. It will be try and see realy. I would start with 8-10 hrs/day.
me love fishy
I have a planted tank and feed my fish once a day in the morning, mostly flake and spirulina and on Saturdays they get frozen food, don't be tempted to feed too often just because they come to the front when you walk up to the tank either. My lights are on from 7am till 10.30pm everyday.
nemines
i feed the fish in my planted tank (cardinals, flying-fox, ottos, chain loaches, blue rams) twice a day; each feeding is very small. my cichlids i feed sparingly, every second day i give them one feeding. the rest of the time they munch the algae off the rocks and back glass (i've been trying to get as much algae growth for them as possible). generally i only give my fish as much as they can eat in 20-30 seconds, if they haven't eaten it after that, i give them one more minute and, if it's still there, i remove it using a net. Barrie
Im breeding most the time and feed twice a day to the breeders... if they start to not be as keen on their tucker, they miss a meal or two The fry get twice a day and sometimes 3 times at the weekends as well as 90% water changes twice a day At Christmas, when Im away, they get fed maybe once a week but I do have Java Moss in with them at that stage
jim r
How often do fish get fed in the wild you may ask? I think the most common answer would be whenever they can find food. Overfed sometimes and starving when their is no food to find. Mine are fed once daily and happy to see me.
evilknieval69
Mine are fed once daily and happy to see me. Happy to see you, or those prawns that you sit over their tank to tempt them?
