If I want to worm my tank...

... what should I be using? or have on hand for when I get new fish?

Should have asked this earlier, been at a vet clinic for the last 2 weeks (last day today) and I can hit them up for anything I need.

Just curious, as have seen people mentioning they always worm their new blue rams or whatever, and am thinking it wouldn't hurt to dose my tank too??

Tank currently houses angels, neons, bristlenoses and a pair of blue rams

Thanks

http://www.medicinenet.com/metronidazole/article.htm

Says "Metronidazole is an antibiotic effective against anaerobic bacteria and certain parasites" I guess the worms are sensitive to it too? It is good for worming fish and works discus breeders use alot of the stuff to keep their discus in top shape have heard some recommendations of regular worming cycles for fish but that seems a little hard core to me..

All this is incredibly confusing guys.... does anyone have the time or patience to write this all out clearly once and for all!! Also what would be incredibly helpful is a list of vets in NZ who know something about fish and their diseases and who stock the meds. So far I havent even been able to find levisomole (sp ?) down here....

kd123 I was thinking the same thing today, I think somewhere theres a list of meds and what they are for.

A list of ailments, symptoms, the meds, the names they are known by in NZ and useful vets would be really good.

I have a friend up here who is a trained vet and she just looked blank when I mentioned the word 'fish' - said that she would refer to a specialist, didn't dare ask her where they hung out and how much that would cost!

Might pluck up the courage next time.

lol kd, thats why I started this thread. I did a quick search first on the forums to see if my q had been answered, but all I got was threads of people arguing over the merits of cat and dog wormers...

You guys want me to become a fish specialist once qualified and prescribe you the meds you need?

I noticed HFF were selling 100ml bottles of some worming stuff with a big long name, with their own printed labels on it. Its $50 per bottle, and 5ml treats something like 50 or 100L, so the 100ml bottle was about 10x as much as I needed, and they don't sell it in smaller bottles.

Anyone want to go shares in a bottle??

Not helpful!!... the 'big long name' on the bottle and the name of the shop (not HFF) would be very helpful!! Please

I posted a similar question in the disease section under a thread with the heading

Drontal, Droncit, Praziquantel, Adtape & Gill flukes

I took that infomation to a local rural vet and even then i got the blank look and i must admit thought i was going to get no where.

It turns out they had a visiting vet from Australia who knows quite alot about fish and 4 hours after i enquired about Metronidazole (which is a prescription drug only) (Also it should be noted its a drug for humans) I was given a prescription for the fish i needed to treat.

The animal version of the drug i was given is called Stormorgyl 10, i was using it to treat discus, the method used was to set up a hospital tank, bath the fish using 1 x tablet (made up of spiramycin and metrronidazole) per 25l of water. I needed to bath them for 2 hours then dispose of the water.

While the fish were bathing i was doing 50-70% water changes. I did this for 3 days and the fish are now healthy and show no signs of illness.

I hope this info can help others avoid the hassle i had in obtaining the medication i required.
