Caryl
Cardinals are happy in 22 - 26C and the males are slimmer. Don't know about price but I think they are usually around the $7 - $8 mark. Dearer than neons but prettier, hardier, and live longer. michael.qian
$6.99 at Jansens and Hollywoods. On Tradme you can get 5 for $25 I think. They are happy at higher temperatures. Personally I would go for neons, 3 times cheaper and looks almost as good.
evilknieval69
and neons die 3 times faster....

noelj
i think neons are way more beautiful than cardinals.

paekakboyz
theres that really good article about breeding them that I had a look at from the sites homepage - seems the key factor is covering the tank to mimic the dark conditions that they breed in. I'm hoping to have a go at it as well - let us know how your attempts work out - and I'll do the same!
Caryl
Bryan, the author, used to breed cardinals in huge numbers and supplied shops with them. The article was meant to encourage others to give it a go.
jn
Call Redwood and Organism... from what I've seen even with their 2 for 3 deal at animates they're still more expensive than elsewhere!!!
je_suis_ketan
I'm still new to fish keeping but I don't get why Cardinals are 3 times more expensive than neons????? Yes they are a nicer looking fish but I don't think the price difference justified for what they are. :-? Just my opinion.
Dixon1990
Maybe its becasue Not as many people breed them so most will have to be imported, Where as alot on neons are bred in NZ.
tHEcONCH
I'm still new to fish keeping but I don't get why Cardinals are 3 times more expensive than neons????? Yes they are a nicer looking fish but I don't think the price difference justified for what they are. :-? Just my opinion. Don't be fooled by appearances - they are quite different fish. Cardinals generally have more colour, are a little bigger, and live for much longer in a well maintained tank. Historically they were considered impossible to breed in captivity (unlike neons), although that isn't the case now. All those factors mean that they command a higher price than neons which, although still a very nice fish, don't have the same visual impact or value as Cardinals, especially in bigger tanks. paekakboyz
neons have been bred in captivity for ages and in HUGE numbers which is why they are cheaper - inbreeding etc have taken their toll on the quality and they are prone to karking it... While people have been successful in breeding cardinals I don't think they've managed quite the same scale (seems to be a bit more difficult that breeding neons) and I think quite a few still come from the wild - hence they are less inbreed and as a result live longer. IMO cardinals are one of the nicest freshwater tropical fish and outshine neons easily
