HaNs
WCMM WCMM???
Rozski
white cloud mountain minnows. A small, cold-warmwater schooling fish
Ira
Well, there's the obvious...Guppies. You might be able to get something like WCMM or Danios multiply faster because of larger spawn sizes. But, I think that would be outweighed by the significantly higher workload to breed them. Personally, I'd probably go with pearl gourami feeders. I know I have good luck breeding those. bdspider
Any livebearer? I've heard of swords and platies being used too.
HaNs
I might just go guppies as the tank is small. Would guppies and another small pair be fine? would the nip?
snookie
catch some gambusia !
HaNs
With guppies and other do the adults eat the fry? If so what species dont?
Wok
Problem with gambusia is that if you get caught with them you will be fined by MAF Guppies in my opinion breed faster than WCMM, However in saying that, WCMM will happily breed by them selves in a bathtub outside the house.. you definitely get more in warmer weather. Convicts could be another good source of feeders as they breed quite quickly if they are in a tank by themselves. I still have some that are now 3cm+ (approx 50 of them)
HummingBird
I would recommend Convicts too. They breed far more often and in higher numbers than the other fish mentioned, the only issue is growing the fry up - you'd probably have to have another tank or a tank divided, because otherwise the parents would eat them when they go to breed next week. heh. Afrikan
I have known convicts to happily raise a batch of fry and breed again while still have the existing fry growing on, and all have been happy campers, some are better than others huh 8)
HummingBird
Good point, I've had it happen to, but not in the size of tank that would usually be allocated to feeder fish Another big plus with convicts is that they're always interesting to watch, too. Afrikan
Yeap convicts would be an excellent choice, they are actually a beautiful looking fish too, even tho they breed like flies...
ryanjury
lol but a convict is likely to survive being eaten and then escape and evade and grow up!
HaNs
My tank i will be using will not fit one large convict. So looks like guppies. Do they eat the fry? Can i mix a few species in one tank?
Afrikan
Thats why you feed only enough for the fish to keep an eye in a matter of seconds... rather than dump a load in and the cunning ones (or some would say lucky ones) get away
Afrikan
How many litres is the actual tank? And guppies love floating plants, ie indian fern etc... What other species were you looking at to go with guppies?
HummingBird
Guppies will eat fry if they can and they're hungry, the best advice I can give to prevent it happening is to stuff your tank full of plants, both floating and non, and keep the adults fed and happy. HaNs
Not sure on tank size as its a friends. 40L or so Im not sure what else i will keep in there...a small fish to clean up and maybe some WCMM
HaNs
I could get 2 40L tanks..... Could either have 2 different species in each tank...or just use one tank for the older fish and one for the young?
Wok
40 Litres would be big enough for a pair of convicts. at work I have a 30L tank with a pair of convicts and 30 fry at the moment. fry are 1cm long too. Only problem is 2 water changes per week
Ianab
Hard to beat guppies for breeding. Like the folks say, plenty of plants will improve the survival rate. Another thing I have found is to take out the full size adults. The 1/2 grown ones will breed, smaller spawnings, but the smaller adult fish dont seem to eat the fry like the BIG MOMMAS do. One of my tanks got so out of control with guppies I had to put a kribensis in there as birth control Cheers Ian
