Dixon1990
So i want to set up a 4foot planted tank. I haven't got the tank yet im just working out what exactly im going to do and want some suggestions for what filtration and substrate to use. I want the cheapest filter i can get that will keep the water good quality. The fish i would want to have in here are: 1 BGK 4-5 Discus Pair of BN 2 Whiptails Pair of Blue Rams 12-15 Rummynose or cardinal tetras. Would this be overstocked?and would these fish be happy living together?
evilknieval69
Sounds nice. It depends on the litreage as to exactly what fish you can have but your standard 4 footer should take those fish comfortably. Id use either a fine gravel, or sand, or even a mixture of both if you prefered it. For filtration, id use an external filter around 1000LPH, which you could probably pick up on trademe for not too much, or even brand new for just over $100. Have you read my starting a planted tank article? ill try find it for you EDIT: here it is, hope it helps you http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/thinki ... 18044.html
Dixon1990
Thanks.
smidey
i use a sand base & have a gravel top layer. those fish should be fine but i would recommend having at least a 1200L/ph or two 1000L/ph. On my 3 footer i have thw hood filter (900L/ph) & a CF1000 (1000L/ph) which keeps the water crystal clear. The discus need really good clean water or the don't do well. I can recomend petplanet for well priced canister filters, especially the aqua one CF1000 or CF1200.
Dixon1990
Has anyone got any ideas for other fish? Im only looking at having fish from south america for this tank.
dimebag
corys? maybe a couple of banjo catfish? both these do better with a sand substrate.
Dixon1990
Would a couple flash plecs(L204) be alright in this tank? Also what is a good price for them?
A.PROPHECY
ull get small ones at hollywoods for $
Dixon1990
Are there any other small fancy plecs that are cheaper?
coelacanth
not many. go see Organism and they'll be able to help you out. But other than bns and gbas most small plecs are at least around $
Rockerpeller
i've set my planted tank up to handle common plecs. main problem being is that they used to rearange the substrate quite abit and rip up plants. i found that using medium sized riverstones seem to stop them somewhat. check out the "members tanks" section and you can see how i set mine up. Dixon1990
Im not a big fan on common plecs. but nice tank
evilknieval69
clown plecos are cool. they are usualy sold a 'pretty peckoltia' and are around $36. There used to be some small pitbull plecos around aswel and they were pretty cheap aswell, around $20-$25.... HTH
Dixon1990
Yes clown plecs are cool. I might get a couple of them. I will pm organism to see if they have them. Can they be kept in the same tank as BN's?
evilknieval69
Yep, i have mine in with BN, corys etc
coelacanth
can breed them too. I think they might be a bit dearer than $36 down here though...?
Dixon1990
If i had a breeding pair of Bn in there could i add a pair of GBA? if they were already paired up before they went in the tank? Or would they cheat on each other and interbreed with the other species?
coelacanth
you would end up with a bunch of hybrids.
Dixon1990
Would guppies get hassled in the tank with the fish i want?
markoshark
Your discus would enjoy the free food provided ^.^

markoshark
Looks good. Remove the neons, they dont like discus temps. Add Rummynose or Cardinals. Is it just me, or is that a heck of a lot of bottom dwellers?
Afrikan
Not too many bottom dwellers IMO for a 4ft tank, just make sure they get good tucker
Dixon1990
I was planning on getting cardinals or rummynoses. But the bgk will eat them when it gets bigger so are there any other larger tetras from south america?
markoshark
it will take a BGK a long time to fit one in its mouth
