cees
What's the brineshrimp supply in New Zealand (or the rest of the world for that matter) like these days?
Caryl
Keep your fingers crossed all you brine shrimp users. Some locals are conducting experiments at the Grassmere Saltworks in Marlborough to see if brine shrimp egg production is economically viable. Rob
Within the last 2 or 3 weeks the local shop has started stocking JBL Artemia cysts (I would assume a new JBL product line in NZ). They are significantly cheaper than what had been stocked previously - though this varies shop to shop, I came across one that was apparently charging what the market would bear rather than their standard mark up. Initial reports indicate a good hatch rate.
ajbroome
I'm always on the lookout for a good supply of brineshrimp eggs. I've typically paid around the $100 a pound (can or bag) and am not too keen to pay the 2.5 x that I've been hearing about lately. Any ideas gratefully received. Once upon a time we brought in a bunch of cans for $25ea but that was when overseas prices were much more reasonable than they have been lately. Having said that, prices seem to be dropping in the US at least this year... Andrew.
Caryl
Substantial grants have recently been approved for the brine shrimp project being conducted at Grassmere. I think NIWA are also helping. They say it will be a slow process but keep your fingers crossed that one day we will have our own supply of brine shrimp eggs at a much cheaper cost that the current imports! *Virgil
I recently purchased a pound of brine shrimp eggs from USA for what seemed to be a good price. The company name was brine shrimp direct. The web address is http://www.brineshrimpdirect.com/. Im not sure how it would work shipping to NZ, but they do advertise World-wide shipping. cees
Yes, I dealed with that company before. Imported a case (12 cans) for the Upper Hutt club about 3 years ago. Good service. I'm now using my last can. Still hatching.
colinmarshall
From Brine shrimp direct you can purchase a 12lb case of Grade A Brine shrimp for US$396.44 freight included. If a few banded together I would say that 12lb of brine shrimp should last quite a time

That works out at around NZ$60 a pound. If they came as pound cans at that price, I'd buy two possibly three. Anyone want the other 9 or 10 cans? I wouldn't want to pay that for one 12 pound container though... Andrew.
Janey
Can you actually get these past NZ customs now? I looked into getting some for our club members about a year ago and Brine Shrimp Direct would not ship them to us as the last order they sent to NZ was destroyed by customs. I forget now, but it might have been a mis-labelling issue. Can someone tell me what the eggs should be labelled as to get them past customs without any hassles? Thanks Jane

Around $792:00 NZD is a lot "o" money for shrimp

I worked on 0.55 you seemed to have been using 0.50. I'd still buy 2 or 3 cans, or other 1 lb sealed units, even at NZ$66. Once they were in NZ. Andrew. ajbroome
Janey said... > Can someone tell me what the eggs should be labelled as to > get them past customs without any hassles? My understanding is they have to be clearly labelled as being Artemia salina. I spent quite a lot of time several years ago working with Stu Macdiarmid (a senior guy at MAF at the time) getting this approved. Going back to my correspondence just now, I find this (dating back to Sept 1997 - I keep *everything* ) ... > MAFRA Standard 152.10.08.502. which states. > 1 The aquaria foods should comprise non-viable animal or > aquatic animal products only, with the exception of Artemia > salina cysts. Hmmm... interesting stuff. Ah. Poo. Seems there's been some updating since then: Ignore the above, the following *should* be definitive... http://www.maf.govt.nz/biosecurity/impo ... ic.all.htm The important bit of which states... > ... > As such, they do not require a permit to import. > > 6 Eligibility > > 6.1 The product must comprise non-viable animal or > aquatic animal products only, with the exception of viable > Artemia salina and Artemia fransiscana cysts. > > The product must: EITHER > > 6.2.1 be shelf stable and packaged for retail sale as aquaria > food in hermetically sealed containers; OR > > ... I suggest people quote the above standard at anyone who detains Artemia cysts that qualify. Hopefully that will clear it up. Andrew.

Pegasus
I would be interested in a pound sealed can. So how can we get the ball rolling. Dennis wants some, Janey and Andrew, Colin, and Cees sounds like he is almost out. I would imagine anything that the local supplier could produce would be double the overseas price, but I could be wrong
cstarretthopkins
I recently bought a case (12 (15 oz. cans) from Jehmco here in the USA. I forget exactly what I paid but it was just a little over $300 (US) delivered the next day. I'm not sure what it would cost to ship to NZ but the box isn't all that big! In any case, it's a fantastic source for supplies and I'm happy to pass along the link! www.jehmco.com./PRODUCTS_/FISH_FOODS_/H ... rand_.html Hope I did that right! I've bought bbs from suppliers where the hatchout was very poor. This product is 90% or better. I NEVER have unhatched cysts! Good luck! Chris
