Aaron-Betta
I have a pair of golden Australe and I was wondering how you know if they are ready to spawn?
caserole
If they are in general good condition they will spawn. If you feed them well for at least a week or two they will produce more eggs then if they were in just good condition. Them = The females. Aaron-Betta
I have been feeding them live mosquito larvae and brine shrimp, their colours have getten really bright now.
caserole
Do you have them in a breeding set up?? If not you will be missing out as they will be breeding, even if they're in a bare bottom tank with no mops.
Aaron-Betta
I have them in a tank by themselves with fruitsalad stones on the bottom, a fake rock formation and a small fake plant. If they were to breed in there would the eggs hatch and would the fry stand a chance at living? I have put in a dark green woollen spawning mop tonight yet they are still hanging around the bottom. caserole
No the fry are unlikely to survive as the adults like little wriggling live foods. I tell ya what - use your gravel siphon on the stones, just siphon the top layer don't dig deep and filter the water through a fine net before it goes into a bucket( put the water back in the tank ). If there's a bit of muck in there rinse it from 1 container to another using fresh tank water and check the contents of the net, you may be surprised. Aaron-Betta
Ok, will do that this afternoon before work. I was watching them like a hawk and have noticed that she is going up to the woolen mop and just sitting in there for a while. If there was eggs in there how long do they take to hatch? Would it be a good idea to take the pair out and set them up in another tank without gravel? Also should I turn the filter off?
Alan
Depends on temp., but allow 10 to 14 days to hatch. Have lots of floating weed for the babies to hide in, then you may get away with some surviving.
caserole
You only need a sponge filter in the tank. What kind of filter do you have?

caserole
Yeah it may be ok, it depends on how fast it is moving the water.
