Insect Direct
O2 as in oxygen from an air pump instead of breathing/blowing into the fish's bag or is this like pure oxygen from a tank like divers use or something???? Ive seen some people mention they use it when sending/moving fish around the place and apparintly the fish can last up to 5 times longer with it! antwan
They would mean pure O2 out of a tank.
davidb
don't make the mistake of adding lots and lots of oxygen weed to the bag- as there is no light, thus no photosynthesis, the oxygen weed uses oxygen rather than producing it... Warren
O2 is really only needed for long trips. If you are traveling with fish you've just purchased, standard air is fine for up to six hours. If they're going overnight then O2 is a good safety measure. Some pet shops have it. Unless you're good mates with the shop it's a bit cheeky asking them to put O2 into a bag you're sending to someone else... If you're just bought the fish from them they'll usually fill it for free. I have a friend with a workshop and use the O2 off his oxy-acetylene set. It's not medical grade O2 but I've never had trouble with it. The best is medical grade if you can find it. You should never blow the bag up using your own breath as there is less O2 in your breath than in air. Also, you'll be adding CO2 in a much higher concentration than in air. CO2 dissolves almost directly and very easily into water...
Alan
.... and if you have been drinking, or perhaps had a meal of garlic, or have bad breathe, it shows up when the bag is open. When I was buying fish from wholesalers, I could tell where they came from just from the smell of the sudden expoltion of air from the bag. I could tell if they were smokers too, and that was before I became a reformed smoker. Alan
DiverJohn
... this like pure oxygen from a tank like divers use or something???? Just for the record, the air that 'most" divers use, is just that... air... well filtered of course but basically just good old 79% nitrogen, 21% oxgen ( near enough!) If you have heard of oxygen being added to cylinders then those divers are probably diving on 'nitrox'. Then there is heliox and rebreathers but thats for a completly different forum
Luke*
So where do we get pure 02 from? Isn't it really hard? As some people could abuse it and breathe it in like a drug. Grumpy Mole Saloon bar use to offer 10mins with it. Didn't last long. lol

I've read about Oxygen bars in places like Japan, where you pay to basically breathe pure Oxygen. Its a definete change from all the pollution and stuff. Luke*
hah yea they'd need it just to get some fresh air every now and then, amidst the smoke and ciggies
Ira
Oxygen doesn't get you high. If you really want the same effect, just breathe fast for a minute.
alanmin4304
If you can put up with the stares and comments you can do what I used to do and go to a friend with a gass welder and fill a few condoms with O2 then drive home and fill your fish bags from them. The containers perish very quickly so you don't want to be taking too much time.
Alan
Or re-cycle them I would think Alan?? Alan
Insect Direct
Alright so does anyone on here use O2 for sending fish etc (im sure someone must) & would they mind telling me where to get it from?? I dont know anyone of the top of my head with a gass welder so cant just tap into there supply unfortunately. I'll be sending some goldfish down south this week so would be good to have on hand, otherwise do most ppl just send fish without??
Scuba Sam
If people do want medical grade oxygen, it might be worth while talking to the local dive shop. Even if they don't fill tanks with oxygen (Nitrox as mentioned earlier), they will probably have oxygen supply kits as part of the medical part of rescue training. These need to be refilled regularly, and will be opened and used as part of diver training in administering O2 to a sick diver. They are refilled before empty most of the time. Cheers, Sam
Caryl
I only did so once recently as they were large cichlids and space was limited. I am friends with the Dr who heads the local A&E at the hospital and he gave me a small oxygen bottle and tubing A dive shop would be my other suggestion or do you know someone with a sick relative on permanent oxygen? A local rest home might help too as they will have lots of patients requiring it on occasion.
alanmin4304
Using O2 allows you to put more fish in each bag and saves on freight. They will be OK with less fish in a bag and will cost a bit more because of the weight of the extra water.
