sharn
my SD's are a great clean up crew  they zip around getting my oscars gill bits and then go down to the substrate to get all those bits out. other than them all your usual larger (if the cichlids are big) bottom feeders will normally suffice. JoandWilly
We have a port hoplo in our malawi tank and he's great as a clean up crew, we are wanting to get him/her a friend but worryed about putting smaller ones in there. mitch
i see that they like well planted tanks but as my tank is all sand and rocks, will they still be alright?
JoandWilly
yeah my tank is all sand and rocks aswell, and mine doesnt seem to stress or anything. Spends most of its day sitting on a rock basking in the light and competes for food just as much as the malawi's
Lucid
we are wanting to get him/her a friend but worryed about putting smaller ones in there. They shold be fine, the malawis won't bother them much and the other hoplo will just think he has friends. Just don't get them to small as they might not handle the attention of the malawis i see that they like well planted tanks but as my tank is all sand and rocks, will they still be alright? yes, as joanwilly have said they will be fine, we have about ten of them in a sand and rock only enviroment, and the are fine. MRSkz
how bout a humbug cat fish? I'm getting one of them myself to pop in with my Mbuna's
mitch
Well i have now added 1 port hoplo and 2 coolie loachs (i think they are mad) to the tank. I did Synodontis multipunctatus (cuckoo cat fish, many - spotted cat fish) because they are from the same lake but the pet shop new nothing about them, so they didnt think you could get them in New Zealand. sharn
khulis are pretty secretive until night time but if another fish did spot them (during the day or night) they probably would go after them- id imagine the way they swim makes them look very tasty  if theres heaps of spots the other fish cant get into they probably would be ok, theyre quick little fish when they wana be!
