Sirkus
hey, my name is kris, i come from a place called newcastle upon tyne in England, i just wanted to get to know what the fish world is like on ur side? im currently doing marine biology at newcastle university, just about to go into my second year this tuesday and i cant wait. ive been working in fish shops here for over 2 years and have picked up a fair bit, and before that i was keeping fish for a fair few years. im 19 and have 7 tanks of which im only allowed 3 up and running at any one time. in my 120litre ive got dwarf pike cichlids, plenty of different types of acaras with rope fish, microctenopoma (which i think are fantastic), and assam blue snakehead which is gorgeous! and a few others in my wee 70 litre theres endlers livebearers, dwarf puffers, plenty of fry, fan shrimp, pango eels and even more fry in the last tank (130 l) which is by no means the least there is more acaras, killifish, a blue phantom plec, gold nugget plec blue fan shrimp and a few other wee fish including egyptian mouthbrooders and speckled panchax. on top of this ive also got a tank with african land snails in which are mulitplying fantastically!plenty of fish food as far as im concerned but i do like to grow them on too. it might be surprising to know that fish arent why i have tanks, in fact its for the plants, fish are merely accessories lol. il get some photos of my tanks up soon to show you all. the question which you may all be asking is why did i join a forum that is 12 time zones away? my family and i are actually considering emigrating to nz, not sure where yet but i was hoping that joining here might help in showing me more about the people and the everything that comes with them and maybe give me a fair idea of where would be best. of course i need to finish the rest of my degree which will carry me upto 2008 but its not long and the more i know, the better. i know it says to say a lil about myself but i like to give a little more
Alan
Welcome aboard Kris. Of course I have to ask you what species of killie do you have  And what is the full name of the microctenapoma. I have an adult pair of the spotted ctenapoma. Enjoy your stay here at the "Shakey Isles" site. Alan
jude
Welcome in fact its for the plants, fish are merely accessories lol that rings a bell with me. My interest in plants is gradually overwhelming my interest in fish. Cheers Jude
Sirkus
ahhh nice to know its not just me with the plants. ive managed to seed Samolus which can be found here http://www.tropica.com/productcard_1.asp?id=026, do you get tropica plants in new zealand? as regards to the killies, il have to check the names, both Aphyosemion i believe but il find out the species name too for you. the microctenopoma are known as M. fasciolatum i think (unsure of the spelling). C.acutirostre are lovely, how big are the ones you got?
jude
I'm not sure if we can get tropica plants although we do have many of the plants listed by them. I just collect/swap with friends and others. I don't have a very high tech set-up so content myself with the easily grown ones. This forum has a list of plants available here if you are interested in looking through it http://www.fnzas.org.nz/plant_survey/ Cheers Jude
Caryl
Hi Sirkus and welcome. NZ has very strict quarantine so getting fish and plants here can be difficult. You cannot import your own. You might find it extremely frustrating since you are used to a much wider range. As to the best place in NZ to live, that would depend on what you had in mind job-wise, and what your interests and hobbies (apart from the tanks) are. jim r
Hi Sirkus hope you are a red/white from the not so foggy side of the Tyne. This is a really good site with very friendly and helpful members you will thoroughly enjoy the contents. cheers Jim. (makem).
fishy_t
Hi Kris I'm from the UK too and what Caryl said about being frustrated is true! There are not nearly as many fish available here Just wanted to say I'm doing Marine Bio too (and ecology) at Victoria Uni in Wellington so if you want to come over to Welly the Uni here would be a great place to do post grad (if you are thinking about it!) AMAZONIAN
Hi sirkus welcome to the forum and good luck with your impending move. the South Island is the far more senic and laid back area of the country and we have a fantastic lifestyle. Work is what will govern your residence. But good luck.

There are not nearly as many fish available here Just wanted to say I'm doing Marine Bio too (and ecology) at Victoria Uni in Wellington so if you want to come over to Welly the Uni here would be a great place to do post grad (if you are thinking about it!) i was thinking bout either doing a post grad (which will require a bit more research and will lead on to better prospects i hope) or going into anything relating to my course, maybe the aquaculture industry which as far as i can see is dotted around the country but particularly in Bay of islands (which is where my brother is going- hes a diesel/ heavy vehicle mechanic). Although i would really prefer ecology, its the interactions between organisms that realy gives me the buzz. its nice to know theres a few people from my neck of the woods and no im not from the red and white side however not a big fan of watchin several blokes fake injuries and get paid stupid amounts of money (UK football). Billaney and Fishy_t, how long have you been in NZ? jude, thanks for the link, you have some plants ive never seen yet! im going to miss my frogbit though (Limnobium laevigatum) i have a feeling that some of these plants arent too common? particularly barclaya longifolia, a plant with some rather impressive qualities to it. ecology and plants excite me so much, probably a fair bit more than people expect, o and of course, theres the obvious....food!!! i absolutely adore cheesecake, salad cream, potatoes! sausages! *wipes away drool and gulps*. Alan
Barclaya longifolia is available here. I got some at the Pupuke LFS and also got some for EJ. His was growing well when I last saw it, but he has CO2 and hi lighting. Mine is just in one of my tanks. Must go and check it to make sure I still have it tho. Sirkus
i have never seen this plant before in the fleshy leafness! it apparently exhibits allelopathy (unsure on the spelling) which in a nutshell means it releases toxins which reduces the population of another organism. Ceratophyllum demersum also possess powers like this as well as the fantastic watercress which seems to do a better job at controlling blanket weed in the pond than any treatment we've used (and that is all but a very small few!).
