  1. LOL! thats quite a solution! just bare in mind that butterflies like to eat anything that may fit into its mouth. i dont know if they would be interested in such a small prey item. in my opinion though, just leave them, theyr just another food supply for the right fish. maybe switching food for the fish may reduce the amount of food available for the bugs to survive on and thus reduce the numbers. hope that helps
  2. lol possibly, i doubt it with the size but im not going to say your wrong. if theres easier food to get rather than hunting, would you go hunting? obviously if theres alot of plant cover itll be hard for the fish to reach em.
  3. I think theyr worldwide as i have them in my tanks. Some fish WILL eat them, especially young killifish and many livebearers, any small fish that will stalk prey on the surface will prey upon them, dont expect danios or fast swimming fish to eat them.
  4. o rite, ive never seen this one flower before but it seems to be doing ok. I know it is at least a hybrid lilly. Thanks for the info though.
  5. Hey all, I cant remember if i have already asked about this previously but couldnt find any topic on it. Has anyone ever seen this?;
  6. That is what it looked like last month with the airline tube coming out of the fluval 4 venturi attachment and leading off under the light tube cap through the hood to the other side of the tank to the second picture This is what it looks like now: the tubing has been redone so that there are taps instead of a piece of pencil tapping out flow to allow more accurate regulation, there is now water delivered to both sides. the S. valerandi has grown a bit slow compared to what i expected but this may be due to no water for upto 10days while i was away which killed half of the Bacopa on the other side (not pictured).
  7. O ok, it was worth asking, thanks for letting me know though.
  8. Hey, I managed to seed S. valerandi last year but never really had any idea on how to germinate the seeds until now. as part of another werid scheme i came up with while trying to get out of revision for exams (which im still doing). I had previously tried growing it on my windowsill but i think its a bit too cold here in the north of england so instead i used a Fluval 4plus pump (not sure of the appropriate model for NZ? it is big enough to deal with a 4ft tank while having an inbuilt venturi). when you attach a spray bar, water shoots out of the venturi. so i attached a piece of air tubing and rigged it up to deliver water to the brace bars either side of the tank which i laid out some java moss which was clogging the intake strainer on another tank and hey presto! the beginnings of a hanging garden! at the moment there is Bacopa, Anubias, java moss of course, java fern and obviously now S. valerandi. il get some pictures up very soon to give a better idea and maybe other people could have their own little babylon! There is a hell of alot of seedlings!
  9. Hey everyone, I was wondering whether or not it is possible to get the red mangrove species in NZ at all? ive been reading up on it a lil and noticed it can survive freshwater (providing it is hard water of course). its not on the list altho i thought its not quite the typical aquarium plant. Totally understandable if its not allowed of course.
  10. Awww wow that looks amazing! what an epic tank!
  11. Ghost knives will be absolutely fine in a planted tank, provided there arnt any likely targets for it to kill? what fish are also in there? Ghost knives appreciate a little cover. Bala sharks on the other hand, ive never really been comfortable putting them in any tank simply due to there skittish nature that has always left me weary putting them in anythin smaller than a 120l (possibly overdoing it in other peoples opinions) they do grow to more than 8 inches and can jump, especially if startled but are a nice fish nonetheless.
  12. it looks to me like Tetraodon cutcutia maybe the link below will help you out. been ages since ive seen this fish, tis nice though. http://filaman.ifm-geomar.de/Summary/speciesSummary.php?ID=25292&genusname=Tetraodon&speciesname=cutcutia
  13. ive never seen anything like that either, i really like it. do u use filtration in there? if so wouldn't it stir it up (guessin u dont going on that basis) so i dont think it wud be decent for apistos unless you could keep the whole tank warm sumhow to prevent convection currents.
  14. i wudda thort that wudda been sumthin you wud think bout wen building a tank...? hats off to the bloke
  15. hows that work for you? granted its not mine... but its nice to know there are ppl crazy enough to do my dream. i had a dream similar to this where i lived on the top floor and had crocodiles on the ground floor, shame i was 6 at the time.
  16. lol i like it dasher, interesting perspective. i have both snails and plecs and neither have an effect on the hygrophila which seems to show the problem when there is either a lack of light or no waterchange in a while, either way its a decent bio indicator of the water quality/'happiness' of the fish.

i did have a list typed out but i think maybe talking to the rest of the family again and seeing exactly what we want would really help. we're not a fussy bunch, just want decent surroundings, nice people and a fish shop near by (last one obviously me). o and also a fish club to go to lol. il post the other criteria tonight when i get in and talk to them as i dont think the criteria ive put will really narrow down the places much.

i like it when it rains, it refreshes everything. so i dont think rqin in nz is guna b a problem at all for me. the sun does come out once or twice a year right? i dont know where my parents are thinkinof moving to now in nz, apparently new plymouth is too windy, wot do you expect in the pacific with no significant land mass for a 1000miles and a current sweeping through the strait to the south!lol. i doont think theres enough happenin on the south island for my family altho im sure someone will tell me otherwise (dad= electrician, mam= psych nurse)?

thanks for that sid, beer (or more so lager) is an important part of my diet since im a student, think im guna have to have some teaching to do when i get there to educate the local chippy in making proper chips. i think i can adapt to the pickled situation slowly...very slowly, i didnt mean that i was guna bring vinegar over with me, i was just guna have to carry it around while im there in case of an emergency meal without vinegar at hand lol.

mmmmmmmm i love tartare sauce so much! anything tangy or has vinegar in it at some point is good to me! im pretty shocked by the lack of vinegar outlets! i will definitely be bringin my own, boy am i guna stink if it leaks in my bag  these cheesy weesys sound great, not usually into cheese but im up for trying anything. whats the staple diet for people at home? spag bol? pizza, pasta and such like? i tend to eat the same at breakfast as i would any other meal which parents dont really understand but rice krispies dont really fill you up unless its 5 bowls, im a tall bloke and pretty high metabolism...

ahhhh sorry, i didnt realise chips= crisps. glad thats cleared up. i only have these questions cos i dont want to expect something that isnt so so i think starting from the things i think are important i.e. takeaways and vinegar and then develop onto things i havnt thought about (vinegar is a good one cos i would expect it at a 'chippy'). on a quick googling, i couldnt find what pakeha and pahu are??? cant seem to find out what the kumara is but the recipe for chips looks lovely, i love olives! especially queen, mammoth or ones stuffed with chilli or garlic!!! great, you got me slavering now lol!
