Caryl Posted September 19, 2006 Report Share Posted September 19, 2006 It is flat rock, available (if you can't pick it up off the side of the road like some of us can ) from landscaping places etc. Inert, so it doesn't alter the tank pH and good for fish to lay eggs on. sharn Posted September 19, 2006 Report Share Posted September 19, 2006 heres a pic of my slate i got from the LFS (very expensive that way). you dont NEED to have it for breeding as fish that often like to use slate will use the heater, inlet/outlets of filters, the glass, terracotta pots and generally any other flat surface. i know some angel fish breeders hang it mid water. its up to you whether you want to use it though Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Zoban Posted September 19, 2006 Report Share Posted September 19, 2006 Looking at the prices of slate at the LFS (2.50CDN per lb) vs. the Prices of Slate "floor tiles" at the local home depot (10CDN for 5 sq foot) and the prices at the Gravel yard (forget exaxt but they tend to sell bulk so cheap if only grabbing a few stones). The Gravel yard is cheaper then the LFS and home depot but both are rather potluck for thinkness and sizes. And a more natural look. If looking for semi uniform thickness then the Home depot is decent priced that can be cut or broke to match you needs. Great for caves when cut. Caryl Posted September 20, 2006 Report Share Posted September 20, 2006 You have to watch some will alter the pH - like limestone for instance. Do the vinegar test. Put the rock in a small container and pour a little vinegar on it. If it fizzes, don't put it in the tank, unless you want a high pH for Africans.
