Sorry about your fishy JK Caper

If it's swim bladder, don't they have trouble going down? I thought swim bladder kept them at the top of the tank, or am I mixing it up with something else? Tsarmina, any signs of injury to him/her? How's the water parameters? Caper

I can't see anything causing that dial to turn other than human hands and mine were the only ones around. The heater has been garbaged! Obviously there was something wrong since the temp in the tank only went down once I unplugged the heater. Right now I only have the 2 goldies in there anyway. I moved the lone otto in the other 29 gallon with the other ottos, I was worried because he was not coming out of hiding at all since his fellow ottos went to fishy heaven. I'm going to keep on eye on the temp in the goldies tank. I don't think I'll have to put a heater in with the goldies as the temp was always 72 (will increase once summer comes). The only time I'll have to really watch is when it's coming on winter and I get really stubborn about turning my heat on   Thanks for all the help folks Caper

Yep, I had guppies with barbs and the barbs loved nipping their tails, hence barbs got their own tank  , hmmmm I wonder if that's what they wanted all along! Caper

No there was nobody here but me and the cats. They couldn't turn the heater up though . I've never seen them up on this tank but even so they couldn't rub against it enough to make it turn. That's what is baffling me; the fact that the heater itself was higher! But then if there is a thermostat in them and it failed couldn't it just keep going up if it was reading the temp wrong? Caper

I have never gone to school with anyone with my name. Hated my name as a kid, and hated the first day of school when you had to stand up and say your name  Caper

Just read through again and wondering if you have been acclimatizing your fish before putting them in your tank? jollioilli, if she were putting the fish right in the tank is it possible that it's coming from a tank with a lower pH and that would cause major problems??? Caper

I'm not into medieval, don't wear black t-shirts, but do play online games but just the ones where you play by yourself not with others. I was suprised to see how many young people were on here and by young I mean teens and that doesn't mean that anyone over that is old either!  I'm 50...live alone...well, except for my 2 pussy cats and fishies. Ira wrote: I tried turning it down but it didn't work. I unplugged it because I was nervous that it would end up cooking my fish.  I am soooo old school...I HATE the metric system. It is very, very rare that I use it. The funny thing is the only time I do now is when talking about the weather but my heater doesn't register in metric. herefishiefishie wrote: Ok, understand what you mean by the heater staying on so obviously the temp in the tank will rise as well. But do you also mean the heater as well, because it went from registering approximately 68 up to almost 79? Caper

snookie wrote: I have had the 3 in the goldies tank for I think around 1 year give or take a few weeks. I've tried them with algae wafers but I think the goldies got to them first but then I can't say for sure because I did put them in at night. I've tried zucchini in with them too never saw them go near it. I don't clean the back of my glass or the sides when I do a tank clean. So, do you think that hunger was an issue???? Putting together what I wrote above??? supasi wrote: I did read several sites on ottos on the net and said they could survive temps in the high sixties, it's awhile since I read them but I think maybe 68 was the lowest, but I could be wrong. However, the temp in the goldies' tank never went below 72 and that was with the heater set around 68. The heater just died on my goldies tank so I think I will take the lone otto and the other 3 and put them in with my barbs and tetras. Do you think this would be ok? I don't see any real build up on the walls of this tank but I haven't cleaned the back/sides and ornaments in over a month, do you think there would be enough algae??? Sorry so long, would this make the tank overstocked (29 gallon): 6 red eye tetras 1 green tiger barb 3 albino barbs 10/11 tiger barbs I was hoping to eventually put my 3 cory's in this tank. So, what do you all think as far as stocking? Would putting the 4 ottos in do it? Would I still be able to put in the 3 cory's? Thanks all Caper

What is the temp in your tank? Before you put anything in your tank did you give things a really good cleaning, cleaning meaning just water NO soap 8) Caper

Re: Goldies tank The reason I keep a heater in with them is because of the ottos (well, down to 1 posted in another section). I've always kept the heater set to approximately 68 although in the summer the temp obviously goes up and in the winter it usually stays at a temp of 72 (house is heated in winter). The day before yesterday I was feeding the fishies and I thought this feels a little cool but looked at thermometer, 72. Just figured it felt cool because hand was warm from just washing. Yesterday, I put my hand in to feed and this feels warmer than usual. Looked at thermometer around 79! Looked at the heater which was almost the same temp setting, which I didn't change. I put it down some but when I came home from work the temp in the tank still was up. Figured the heater was not working properly so disconnected it all together. Today the temp is going down. I've heard of heaters staying on before but never going up on their own, anybody experienced this before? Caper

I recently purchased 6 ottos, 3 died within days. The original plan has changed since I only have 3. Anyway, part of the original plan was to put 4 in with my barbs & tetras because I already had 3 in with my goldies. Well in the last couple of weeks I lost 2 of the ottos in my goldies tank Now I am wondering because there is only the 1 in with the goldies would it be better for him to put the other 3 in with him so he won't be alone??? Ottos do better with more than 1 of their kind do they not? (this is a 29 gallon tank) Caper
