  1.   Good one misnoma...furry is right...pic doesn't do him justice although he has lost his winter coat now. He was afraid of the fish when I first got them!
  2. Yah...when I got him...I thought he was only doing this after he ate...but then realized he was swimming this way all the time...I thought maybe something to do with his fins too...but the little bugger won't slow down enough or get close enough for me to see
  3. Shae...I've been looking on the net about swim bladder...most of the sites say the fish are swimming on their sides, head down...don't see anything about on an angle   anyway...none of the sites said if it was contagious or not...I'm thinking not but wanted to check this with you? Well I'm not worried thanks to you...because he is eating and he's been like this pretty much since the time I got him/her
  4. Thanks Shae...I've put something on the tank and will check in an hour like you said. I sure hope it was just a spill and the water's just seeping out because of it. It's almost 11 p.m. here...there would not be a place open that I could buy silicone. Thank you
  5. OMG...I think my tank maybe leaking...not sure...I moved something in the tank...so I may have just spilled the water without noticing. But...just in case...if it were a leak...what would I do? I broke my glasses...broke a light...how in the heck could I break my tank!
  6. Right now they are pretty much go to the glass...although there may not be much algae...if they don't find on the glass...will they go to the ornaments and things, from what I've read they should.
  7. Oh...forgot...is there anything I should know about keeping otto's...I'll browse the net...but I value your opinions I didn't know they were considered a catfish...is this true?
  8. Yes Shae...the darn incadescents...going to try to get florescents. Snowman...that would be me...trying to keep plants alive  Really, you don't know how bad I am with them...my ex said I was so bad that I could kill artificial plants I was terrified to try an aquarium...but with all the help you folks gave me...things so far are going good...don't want to take a chance on the live plants...not yet. Thanks
  9. Thanks Shae...but I managed to get 2 otto's tonight! Thank you jude...he has to have a triple bypass...so I'm worried...next month I find out if my oldest son has to have surgery (not heart). His girlfriend is pregnant and had a 7lb cyst removed, she's fine now. But my life is just....anyway...sorry I know this isn't what this forum is for...taking care of my fish and coming here are helping to keep my sanity. You folks are all so nice...and lately some people in my life...aren't! SORRY...back to fish. This picture may not be too clear...batteries were low in camera...then I broke my glasses ...but I'm hoping you guys can verify that it is indeed otto's I have here...I've seen pics on the net and they look like them...but I trust you guys more than those that sell them. Thought I'd through in a pic of my other pet! I gave my tank a good cleaning...last week...how will I know if there is enough algae for them to eat. I did buy the algae wafers as well just in case...what do you folks recommend. THANKS AGAIN
  10. Thanks Shae, He eats just fine...and scoots up to get the flakes no problem...I wouldn't say he is skinny...just smaller than the others...their stomachs...ummm...rounded I guess, definitely not protruding...they look fine...if you have seen any of my pics...I believe they are "normal" looking
  11. I'm having a hard time getting algae eaters...will this hurt my fishies home not having them. The lady at Walmart said she could try to get me otto's...but the only thing is...my boyfriend has to have heart surgery...and we don't know when he could get a call to go...so I don't want them to order them...in case I'm not here.
  12. Nice fishie...will they get very big?
  13. thanks kribkrazy! Then holy cow...$400 for a fish...what would make it sooooo expensive...I've seen some here that were $100...and was shocked! I mean on this site...other fish priced high...anybody know where I can get a brain :-?
  14. They are a pretty fish...but really...$400...are you guys serious? Is your currency different than Canadian...e.g. if I wanted to buy an American dollar...would cost... 1.20 Canadian (of course, depending on the exchange rate). You say that they are becoming scarce in the wild...ah... ...ah...do most fish sold in pet stores actually come from their "native" lands...or should I say water? Feeling REALLY dumb about now...but I thought that most of the fish you see in pet stores were bred...not captured...REALLY dumb :-?
  15. Hi Maxy! I'm only new at this...but on a previous post...my lights were out till late one evening...when I turned the light on in aquarium...I was shocked to see that the neons had faded...hardly any colour...but after the light being on...their color came back. Went back to see what the post was..."neon tetra color"
  16. Thanks Snowman I don't have live plants in my tank. Me and live plants...just don't get along  If the local SPCA new how many plants I have killed, they probably wouldn't let me keep ANY kind of pet   Perhaps someday I will look at the idea of live plants...but right now my focus is keeping fishies alive and well...if I had to take care of plants too DISASTER   I didn't know until Heather told me that the air pump was to agitate the water...I thought the air pump was putting more oxygen in the water.
  17. Gee Ira...never noticed that...but then usually the only light I have on is the tank...and a couple of small lights on my entertainment unit and a shelf. I'll have to take note the next time I turn on other lights 8) I love this place...you folks are GRRRRRRRRRRREAT!
  18. Thank you Shae It is now settled; they are black neons Shae, one of the three has always been smaller than the other two and he/she swims most of the time as if on a...say... about 45 degree angle...and ideas on this?
  19. Hi all, I've noticed that a lot of the time when the tetras aren't swimming around...ummm...sorta hanging around...they face towards the back of the tank...is that because the filter is on the back and returning flow comes that way???
  20. herefishiefishie WOW...beautiful pics and fish...you must be proud Others will probably best direct you on bigger pics...all I know is that when I took the pics I put them on photobucket.com (as recommended here)...I then just copied and pasted using the Img file.
  21. OH...I don't know if this makes a difference...but I do notice that the tetras in question...when it's feeding time...they will zip up to the top of water to get the food as well as feed as the flakes fall...I've rarely seen the neons go up to the top.
  22. Thanks suphew! After the guy telling me that I could have a good ammonia & pH reading but the nitrite could still be too high, and where I was having such a hard time with the coloring, I got worried. You've put my mind at ease thank you
  23. Thanks Heather! I was told by the lady at the pet store that I needed an air pump, so have been using one all along. Is it safe to assume that the water being returned from the filter is sufficient then? From everything I have read so far, if fish are not getting enought oxygen they will "gasp" at the surface, right? Where I have always had the air pump, would it stress the fish if I were to turn it off now?
