  1. When they came out to HWFF they had them labled as albinoes, I pointed out that they didn't have the pink eyes so they have now apparently changed their name to "sunset". So they just look like an albino WCMM without the pink eyes. I still prefer the naturals. Alan 104

    New Tank Set-up

Yeah Jake, let's know what the cam is that you are using. Please!! Alan 104

    New Aquisitions

Good one Zoban, remember that they can jump. These wre the first species that I ever got, and the first ones that taught me about their jumping skills in less than 24 hours. Any gap seems to be NO problem for them to practice their skill on. What did they cost for the pair?? Alan 104
  4. Yeah Cooper, it is about 12 days F/S that the parents are starting to get the urge again and dispose of the babies as they are considered the major threat to their new breeding efforts. Try taking out half of them at about a week old and raise separately. Alan 104
  5. Hope this is not stupid. Did you use salt water. I've seen newbees try the fresh, it doesn't work. Another thing is that the viability if eggs from the LFS isn't always what it should be. In fact some times they are completely useless due to the way they have been store, and for the cost of them, not good enough. By the way, where is Balfour?? Alan 104
  6. I'd go for two 150's with a reasonable water flow that would be heaps. The advantage of having a smaller wattage is that if one fails on, you have a little more time to save the tank. What fish are you keeping in it? In fact from Tauranga, with reasonable insulation one heater would do. Just depends on the fish and what temp you want to maintain tho. Alan 104
  7. Get in touch with Brent at the Pupuke Aquarium. He is a very obliging guy, and if you were to order them in and pick them up with out him having to debag them, I'm sure he'll see you right. But ask first and say that you are from the forum, you'd score more "brownie" points too if you belonged to an FNZAS club. Alan 104
  8. If it is in the sun it will pick up the red colouration. It is actually the smallest fern in NZ. Alan 104
  9. Well done. Now to see if they'll hatch. I've lost three batches now after leaving them with the parents. Found this after googling you're threads heading Amazonian. Alan 104

    tadpoles

Yeah!!! Why not?? Good way to help the frogs regenerate in an area. Just don't put them where there are gambusia. Alan 104
  11. Empty all the water out and cover the plants with wet newspaper to stop dehydration. If this isn't done the water sloshes around and rips everything out anyway. 50ks isn't far to travel. To pick up heavy tanks or to lift them if you back is liable to be hurt, have two ppl and find some old safety belts from down at a local wreckers. Saves the tank slipping from your fingers too. 12. Very normal, sit down and watch and enjoy nature at it's best. Well, in our tanks anyway. Where is Balfour?? Alan 104

    Xmas Holidays

Don't want to upset your holiday plans, but I'd go along with all of what Stu said BUT the big problem is if your filter fails or worse still, heater jambs on, or even worse than that, the tank cracks. Maybe you could get in touch with a local school and see if a kid would like to earn some pocket money?? Of course you would have to do some qik training. Turn the heater off, you won't need it over Xmas. If it locks on you are going to loose your fish, if it burns out, you'd be in the same position as if it was off. But I'd say go and have a happy holiday, the fish should be fine, if you do as Stu says. A bonus of that is that the fish will really appreciate your return. Alan 104

    Breeding

About a 1 cm long, look around the edges ot the surface of the water against the sides, also on top of your plants if you have floating indian fern, or amonst denser plants like java moss or cabomba. Alan 104
  15. Or re-cycle them I would think Alan?? Alan 104
  16. Can you not see the bi-metal strip that does the make/break action. Use a tank of known temp and adjust the setting on the h/stat using this method. But it does depend on if you can see that metal arm of course. Alan 104

    water meter

Jim, turn your hose on full and fill up a container of a known quantity, and time it If it takes 20 seconds to fill a 10 lte bucket and the drum takes 15 minutes, that means your drum is 450 lts, (hope I got that correct.) You could also take a reading of your meter on the roadside before and after, but that gives the cubic metres used. Alan 104

    Choc Australe

Yes, but make sure that your tank has a lid that is "Jump-Proof" That means, NO GAPS AT ALL. Alan 104

    water meter

They're easy to find Jim. In front of just about every house is a small blue plastic lid, this covers a water meter, but you'll need wet-weather gear a shovel and a sharp spade or if you can take your time, a spanner. Oh!! and a fairly fast car with no number plates is fairly useful too. Your water dept of the council might sell you one Seriously tho, what do you need it for?? I have several methods, but before expounding on them I'd need to know the reason to see if they are usable in your case. Alan 104

    Hi everyone

Welcome aboard Emily. I think there is a pretty good club down your way. They just put on a good Livebearers Show. Have a look under the Club area for details. Alan 104
  21. .... and if you have been drinking, or perhaps had a meal of garlic, or have bad breathe, it shows up when the bag is open. When I was buying fish from wholesalers, I could tell where they came from just from the smell of the sudden expoltion of air from the bag. I could tell if they were smokers too, and that was before I became a reformed smoker. Alan 104
  22. I hear that Bunnings stock a good line of spray paint Buster, by the way, welcome to the forum, enjoy. Seriously though, the young ones change with age, and if they haven't changed when a reasonable size the wont, they have reverted to their natural colour. If you were swimming in a lake surrounded by herons, what colour would you want to be, a bright gaudy red and white, or a plain ol' bronze. I know my choice. Give them time. Alan 104
  23. If the neons are adult size you could get away with it. Alan 104
