Get a breeding pair of gold severum. Dang things are making hills and valleys all through our 6ft tanks. They are forever digging and rearranging the furniture. Occasionally think it might be nice to NOT see the bare glass in the bottom of the tank all the time.
-
We had our last goldfish in our 6ft tank with our oscars and silver dollars and severum a couple of years ago. Didn't want to put him in any of our other tanks at the time as he usually took a bite out of eveything else and couldn't start a new tank for him so in he went. Everyone lived quite happily together, goldfish learnt pretty quickly who to stay away from and the dopey oscar was so slow he had enough trouble catching food held in front of his face let alone chasing a fish. Goldfish eventually got sold to someone who really wanted him to add to their breeding stock! Since i have seen that these fish can live together quite well and providing they have the space i think it is probably quite a cool and good looking tank!

April meeting of Christchurch Totally Tanked
Loopy replied to Loopy's topic in FNZAS & Afflilated Clubs
Wow not a bad count Evil! Closest so far! I am never sure how many people are going to turn up to a meeting. There can be last minute cancelations or people who come along but never mentioned attending. As a rough indication i have had 6 forum members who intend to come along today. Small change in plans/location. Because it is wet and cold and Blah outside i should not be sitting here typing this i should be running around frantically tidying up the house so that we have space for everyone inside! Everything shall be as normal except we shall stay inside! -
April meeting of Christchurch Totally Tanked

Umm i am not sure. You could bring something like bread or a drink or maybe a small something for a dessert? At the moment i am more worried about having enough light for a barbecue!! I am sure we shall all be fine though! will be too busy chatting! -
We still have 1 very wriggly little silver dollar fry! Had 4 hatch but 3 disappeared. I think it was planaria which i just discovered in the tank late last night. Will not be too worried if this last fry dies too. Would be fantastic if he hangs in there till Totally Tanked night. We are just amazed at all we have learnt in the last week about breeding these very cool fish!

I am very seriously considering going this year. I think it would be good for Totally Tanked in general and a good way for me perhapes show i really am dedicated to all this. Once i can get my head around all the costs involved i will decide whether i can/will go and put my leave form in at work

They are about 6" give or take a bit.

Male silver dollar -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- Female silver dollar Note the shape difference in the anal/bottom fins. Females also tend to be larger, rounder and fatter than the males.

This is the farthest we have got and I'm starting to turn blue. We don't want to count our fish till they hatch. If we succeed in getting one to hatch we will be wrapped. We will also then syphon the eggs out when we can to have a go at that elusive number. We will be trying to get pics as they go. I tried earlier but when I worked the photo I couldn't cee the eggs. Mrs Loopy is better at the camera thing than I am so we will see what she can when she finishes work (Shaz got somw awesome pics of the siamese spawning)
-
You will know how hard case they are when spawning then. Ours used to spawn 24/7 apart from when we fed them.
-
Our dollars are about bread plate size. Something to note with the dollars is they are group spawners and they do eat the eggs. Also if you get them from a shop you should know how to sex the juvies. We have attempted to get the eggs to this stage many times but always thought the male was infertile as the eggs clouded within a matter of hours. As for selling.... Maybe in the future if we get a good success rate. But can't really say at this stage. Hope to see you at the meeting on Saturday and hey; if the eggs carry on the way they are you will beable to see the fry. Mr Loopy

Oh wow!!!!!!! I just saw the "seam" in one of the eggs MOVE!!! It wiggled a couple of times and then i squalked and hubby came down to look and he saw it wiggle too!!! this is getting exciting!
-
golly have i cracked it first time???! I have 6 out of about 18 eggs which are still clear after 24 hours and are starting to get a "seam" visible in them. I think this is a good sign! 48 moore hours and something might hatch!! And even if i lose these 6 eggs i think it still shows that there could be hope! Watch this space
-
I am quite keen to give this a go. I have 3 males and 5 females and they spawn regularly. The fun part seems to be determining whether the eggs are fertile and how to get them to hatch etc. I have about 2 dozen eggs in a small tank at the moment with a drop of meth blue and will watch to see what they do. gonna keep trying until i convince myself or someone else convinces me that it can't or can be done. Has anyone got any tips or stories or experience with breeding silver dollars? *edit typo*

Or you could come along to meeting of Totally Tanked and see our breeding pair of gold severum and we can discuss how to sex and raise fry etc.
-
I can answer your first 2 questions relativly easily but there are far too many species of fish to choose a favourite. Probably why we have multiple tank syndrome so badly. Our 2 pairs of angelfish have been popping out babies like crazy and the oldest spawn we have here are about ready to sell but they are still young so it will depend what they will be getting put with. Also have a tank full of long fin blue danio fry which are about 3 weeks old. We have a bit of an arrangement with a pet store here in Chch for selling our babies so don't usually advertise on trademe or here anymore. But if there is genuine interest and you are quick we can hold a few and will sell to anyone. We just usually want to move on the whole tankful in one go rather than trying to sell off babies individually.

DON'T put golden apple snails and plants anywhere near each other. Even plastic plants and sponge filters will get nibbled. that is unless you WANT the snails to eat them?
-
I got 4 of these about 4 weeks ago from critter kingdom and now have a tank full of 2 week old fry. Were sold as "blue danios" but seem to be more known as longfin blue danios. When i saw them in the tank at the store they looked really mottled and i thought they were a standard zebra x golden zebra mutation. they were really pale gold around the head darkening back to the silvery blue. and have less stripes than a zebra. Very very active wee things. "spawn, spawn spawn spawn FOOD! spawn spawn spawn......" I would describe them as "washed out zebras" This is a photo of one of my fish. Why did it have to take 20 shots to get this? everything else was a blur!

April meeting of Christchurch Totally Tanked
Loopy replied to Loopy's topic in FNZAS & Afflilated Clubs
Hey there everyone! Great to see so many enthusiastic folks out there! thank you for the support and i really look forward to this meeting :bounce: :bounce: I hadn't really thought about a prize or anything! It might have to be a baby angel to the winner. Because what if i said that bucket of angels was one spawn? and then i told you we have another tank with another spawn in it too? (and they are the strangest bubby angels i have seen yet! All we have had so far is plain golds and plain blacks. These other babies are gold with black stripes, gold with gold stripes, black and no stripes, black with stripes, and the striped babies have either only a few stripes or heaps and gold with what i can only describe as a black halo) and one of our pairs of angels has had swimmers for a week now and the other pair are due to lay in the next week. Does anyone want any angels? -

hmm.... Not telling cichlid7! well...yet I uploaded the full size photo to photo bucket so should be easier to see. My photo editing program which i usually use is being stoopid and also means i am having issues with the latest issue of the newsletter http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y49/so ... e001-1.jpg
