  1. good point Ktttk. Can be interesting to see just what sparks someones interest who is not from around here. A year ago GBA's were impossible to find here in chch but were common as dirt up north (or so it seemed to us!) and now they are just starting to become a bit more of a regular sight. My big purchase for the weekend was ........ wait for it..... A pearl danio  How exciting! Glad to hear you have made it home well Caryl. I wonder if everyone else has made it home in one piece?
  2. LOL! Yeah you are on to it markoshark. it's kids alright. One of them was bouncing around at 4.30 this morning  Well i hope everyones trip home went well. I alos hope you/they enjoyed themselves! Now i can't wait for next weekend!! :bounce: :bounce: Yay Conference!
  3. I just poked my head in quickly before going to bed. i work from 6pm to 1am most evenings. Come home and have a small nosey to see what i missed while i was working. What were YOU doing still up at that hour??
  4. I caught up with everyone at organisms monday morning. And yeah that cash register was running red hot i think!! Then i followed everyone along to redwood aquatics and well $$$!! I think Billaney will be going home pretty happy! The kids slept in on monday morning! i might have to get everyone round every evening to wear them out like that! They were totally shattered! So many people to chat to and play with! Thanks everyone for coming along! I think it was a hugely successful night. It was great to see the familiar faces and the new faces. I hope everyone enjoyed themselves as much as i did. And i can't wait for the next meeting!
  5. According to here we can http://www.biosecurity.govt.nz/imports/animals/standards/fisornic.all.htm#partd whether a shop will order them in and what prices they charge for them could be a different story
  6. Does he still eat well? How is he swimming? Normally or not? Does his body look distorted? or like he has just gotten really fat? Any other symptoms? I think either worms or perhapes a tumour?
  7. They both focus on a slightly different colour of light. One of them produces a bit more of the red in the light spectrum and the other more blue. I can't remember the specifics because i am already digging up old memories from back at school but plants need the red light to convert to energy i think so a bulb that produces light with more of the red concentration will be more beneficial. The powerglo and Aquaglo bulbs have little graphs on the sides of their boxes with give an indication of what they produce etc. I hope some one comes along to correct or confirm what i have just said please
  8. I just had to replace a blown bulb for one of my tanks. I have a 4ft double bulb hood (aquaone brand) The remaining bulb which still works is a power glo and i decided to get an Aquaglo bulb. I hope that i made the right decision. I thought that combining those 2 bulbs should give me a good range in the tank for the plants.
  9. unless they are the ones who caused it

    This or that

texting Fussy about foods or open to try anything?
  11. you should be able to get a replacement part rather than buying a whole new filter. would be a shame to lose a good cycled filter. the part should hopefully only cost about $15. I think that is about what we have paid to get replacement parts. Sounds like perhapes the ceramic shaft or the outer casing has worn out?
  12. I think what Jayci was meaning is all your good bacteria could have been killed. Your biological filter is pretty much your canister filter and your gravel, anywhere where the crud builds up i think. All the bacteria is what helps keep your tank at a happy healthy balanced pH,nitrite, nitrate etc and does all the chemical convertions needed and turns poo and wee into .... umm can't remember  I think it helps if you think your filter as another fish which needs to be cared for. And if it has died, it will be rotting and contaminating your tank and making the rest of your fish ill. When you have bad water conditions your fish will be more sensitive to picking up infections and diseases. try fixing your water first by doing a gravel vacumn and a water change again and don't rush into throwing more chemicals into your tank.
  13. Wow! cool Congrats! That is a lot of little sucky mouths to feed
  14. oh dear  Yes i shall have to try and control myself. We may have a problem too..... hubby has taken a liking to the killies we are killie-sitting.
  15. That will be great Marcel! I was hoping you would be able to come along on Sunday! Weeeee!!! I am getting so excited!
  16. lol! thats fine Casper. I think i can let you away with it this time! I hope everything goes well for you. Thank you for letting me know. It can get a bit stressful trying to guess who might turn up and who doesn't each month.
  17. how bizzare is that!? Goes to show you really never can tell with fish can you! I have 4 angelfish here which i am going slowly insane about cause i just can't work out what sex they are.
  18. I reckon thats a female. Is it one of the ones you got off me?
  19. It is like a fish addicts dream come true! Two totally fishy weekends in a row! :bounce: I am practically foaming at the mouth in excitment over all this! And i WILL be attending as much of the shop crawl as possible. I already just bought an angelfish this morning. Hubby gives me that look every now and then. The "you don't need anymore fish" look. But he also hits buy nows or tells me to go back and get it "for crying out loud" when i ponder over things for too long.
  20. I hope i haven't left this too late for some of you  I think most of you know that the TT meeting for June is going to be held a week earlier this time so that we can get together with the folks coming down this weekend. But i thought i had better post it just in case. So the details of our next meeting are Sunday 27 May at 57A Hoon Hay road. I am not sure what time the others plan to pop round but i think if we stick to our 5pm turn up everything should be fine. The night has been suggested as a b.y.o dinner evening. Keep an eye on both this thread and the one below for more details as they are arranged. http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/attention-anyone-in-christchurch-vt21284.html
  21. Starting to sound like a very busy and exciting weekend! I can't wait!! :bounce: :bounce: Are you going to post the itinerary up here too Caryl?
  22. according to this site planted tanks are what the clown/royal knifefish prefer. http://badmanstropicalfish.com/profiles/profile5.html i had 2 big bala sharks a couple of years ago and the only things that really stuck in my head about them was they jump and they seem really stupid  i should have called them bevis and butthead or something. We had to learn the hard way and from personal experience about the jumping thing. When we moved to our current house they were both in a bucket and hubby took the lid off to chuck them in the new tank and they both flew out of the bucket in opposite directions into the middle of the lounge. I don't think they were very respectful of the tank furniture either. I don't think they deliberately ripped anything up but they weren't exactly careful or graceful in their tank. Don't know much about the knifes. I do know redwood had a knife of some sort a week or so ago.
