  1. whats a chiller? mine sits around 26C. heaters are unplugged since mid december (had a few cold nights when the tank dropped to 21C). if it gets warmer i will just have to change my light cycle and crank up the aircon to keep it at 26C.
  2. that looks just like "my" mother colonie after i finished taken some cuttings.
  3. no really never seen one of them until a friend asked me to look after his one (its been 2 years now) and havn't seen one since either. you should as colours do have improved not to sure yet if the growth has decreased. time will tell not quite but i am working on it. as nothing beats good tank grown frags versus newly imported corals, especially for beginners
  4. didn't you get one of my frags?
  5. looks like the wifes hairdryer
  6. did you make your own rock? used any cement compounds within the tank? there is no way that your CA goes up or is even stable without increase from somewhere be it CA reactor, Limewater aka Kalkwasser (to some degree) or other additives. or your test kit is faulty (or your to drunk when you test it  )
  7. 6 footer, no hard corals, no power cords in tank (no visible pumps), other mean nasties will do as tank mates. i used to have one for 1 1/2 years but had to sell because he became unbearable. but left my cleaner shrimps alone what was most likely just thing of time before they would have become lunch.
  8. just saw your reply. what does "new coral" do compared to "old coral" are you talking live corals or just coral rock?
  9. to answer you question = no there are lots of other factors that cause algae and we don't evenkonw what kind of algae you have or what system you are running, or feeding, or bio load, lights, skimmer type, etc. could be diatoms only by the sounds of it. so do you use tapwater? and why? dino's well lets wait and hope not brown slime, whats your phos and nitrate readings, also KH, CA and if poss Mag? do you have sand? how many fish? how big is the system? lots question but UV will not be a miracle cure
  10. i better start start fragging then.
  11. but he is correct in what he said. i put leathers in a brand new tank (didn't even have much live rock except where the corals were on) and they went thru the whole cycle and showed no stress signs at all.
  12. the answer would be no, as almost all flat worms pose no direct harm to corals unlike nudibranchs. and if the pic shows a flat worm (and i have to agree wiyh ira that it looks like algae) it colour would indicate that it lives within algae and mimics the colour for protection.
  13. your welcome, all the best with your tank(s)
  14. they are called clown wrasse as well. its one of the names the LFS give them.
  15. my 5 year old son has a rockpool under the house. its an old 4 footer with rocks and water in it. he put some local shrimps and snails in a while ago and i figured they would die but i was wrong. they living happly in the tank so we put a local fish which was caught in the rockpools too, even he is alive and growing. the tank gets very little light coming thru a few caps otherwise its pretty dark (and cold) so no algae problem. and my son is very proud and happy that he is able to keep saltwater shrimps and fish alive.
  16. 67 liter give or take one. do what? cook fish soup in it?
  17. hi lots of questions. 1. your tank is very high and not very wide. which makes it hard for light to reach to the bottom with only 150 watt M/H, also 300mm wide will look very narrow once saltwater is in it ( saltwater makes the back look closer, most salties would not run a tank this size, or you will upgrade / change in the near future (something salties do all the time )) 2. skip the canister filter as it is not needed, ok some use them but with no real benefits to the system. 3. do not use sand / shells / oyster shells you find on the beach. if you want to use sand (i would advise against it until you get more knowledge on how to keep it clean - and dirty it gets very fast) 4. reverse gravel beds belong into the fresh water section, all what would happen is your sandbed cloggs up and your nitrates and phospates explode. 5. i would not aim for any stagnent water anywhere in the system as it will / could lead to problems. 6. growing algae in a sump / fuge sounds easier then it actually is. yes it would need light and then best for 24 hours a day so your algae doesn't crash during reproduction. again i would leave it until a later date if ever. 7. don't make your system to complicated!!!!! i would recommend for a newbee to start of with a tank (bigger is more stable) which is not to high (600mm max) but at least 500mm wide, a good skimmer (not air stone driven), good water flow thru out the tank, live rock in the main tank, no sand at least in the beginning (yes i do have sand and would not go bare bottom but it is a lot easier to look after for someone new to the hobby).
  18. if your in the cold and nearly freezing to death for an hour and you get inside then you will not have the flu right away it will take some time to develop. same goes with white spot, those little bastards are not waiting fully grown in some tank corner to attack. for them it takes a while (growing, multiplying etc) before they show up on your fish.
  19. slow down. evenif something gets tipped into your tank its highly unlikely that you will have white spot within 3 hours. wait and see until tomorrow.
  20. its feeding behaviour, be careful with smaller fish (not just small) it will trap the poor buggers within the ball and eat them. the ball resembles a cave with a small hole to swim into which seems very irresitable to smaller fish. :-?
  21. Merry Christmas to you too.
