The Irish are a complicated bunch. The Celts came from Germany (sorta), there is a strong Norwegian influence (Vikings down the west coast, ask anyone in Galway, Cork etc) and then there are Anglo-Saxon types from England and those scary protestant folk from Scotland. All good fun, I'm sure... Or not. Didn't see many cichlids when I was there though Had some fun in Belfast, but that had little to do with fish... Andrew.
  2. Ira said... >Pssst, Andrew, June is mid summer there... Well, yeah, on the spring side of summer though... more or less... It was the days after Memorial Day weekend so very early June. Andrew.
  3. ChrisMack said... > ... it seems they could be Lethoplosternum pectorale, the Dwarf Hoplo! I'd be very interested to hear if you have the dwarf Hoplo. I used to breed these as well as the more common species. These days I no longer have the dwarf one (although Rob Torrens has one or two females I think). I've grown up some of the regular ones and they're nearly ready to breed. I have photos of my ones and am working on getting them online. In the short term I can e-mail pics to anyone interested, contact me at [email protected] if you want pics before I get the HTML done... Andrew.

  5. andyman98 said... > ... they said it is hot ... It was certainly pretty warm when I was there in early June of 2000. High 30s and low 40s C (over 100F) at times. I was mostly looking at plants but did get to go fishing at an airforce base not far from Tampa (and I can be seen in a certain issue of TFH if you know where to look). We caught a bunch of interesting fish and saw alligators and various other scary critters while poking about in swamps looking for killies and other fish. The advantage of being on an airforce bombing range (with permits etc) was that no one else is allowed there so it's reasonably pristine habitat. There are still some photos in various albums at: http://photos.yahoo.com/ajbroome Andrew.
  6. ChrisMack said... > ... a tube of silicone is something I wouldnt use much... Once upon a time (and possibly even now) you could get small toothpaste tube sized tubes of silicone for $10 or so. This may be a way to go... Caulking guns are useful things to have around anyway and pretty cheap from Mitre 10 etc... Andrew.
  7. Folks, So, how did it go? Did anyone take photos (Caryl, you *must* have some surely?)? Did Warren make it? Curious minds want to know! Andrew.
  8. Chris.L said... > Nice pics andrew. Considering they were done pretty quickly using a relatively cheap digital camera (CANON A40) I'm pretty happy with the way they came out. Remember, this is last Sunday which was the beginning of the nasty weather that has closed down much of the lower north island... Next year, we'll have to go look at the other coast I think, to see what we can find there. Andrew.

Not all are as cold tolerant as C. paleatus for example. > i wannah put them in cold water just so that the goldfish will > have some mmore company they seem very lonley I'm not sure goldfish are able to feel lonely or otherwise. Andrew.
  11. andyman98 said... > ops i meant until the start of summer ... I've never tried them at winter type low temperatures but I wouldn't expect them to do well. It just doesn't get that cold in their native habitat (I've only been there in early summer but apparently even the winters are relatively warm). Andrew.
  12. andyman98 said... > would i be able to breed leopard fish outside in a washing > machine tub thingy Probably. They don't like really low temperatures though so I wouldn't leave them outdoors over winter. Andrew.
  13. andyman98 said... > would they be able to live outside from now until > the end of summer? Summer? Probably, although I don't know if they're as cold tolerant as people seem to think. I keep them in unheated tanks in my fishroom... > ... and would they breed? Hard to say. I don't find them that easy to get to spawn. You know they're killies, right? Andrew.

  15. Rob said... > Val isn't as bad as some water weeds in that it needs to have > the base of the plant (where the roots attach) to grow and spread... While I don't usually disagree with Rob, I have to say that I've had some floating in a tank outdoors for the best part of a year and it's definitely sent out runners etc... Andrew.
  16. Pies said... > 20 Gallons according to above. 50 Gallon is a big breeding tank! These are big fish when mature. I had a pair that would've been 7 or 8 inches long (this was more than 10 years ago) and wouldn't've kept them in anything smaller than a 4ft tank. Five of these in a 20g tank is going to prove tricky, I reckon. A better species would be G. steindachneri (aka G. hondae) if they're still around (I'd love to hear if they are). They're smaller, quieter and mouthbrooders. Nice and easy to breed too. Andrew.
  17. Rob said... > ... some of the alternate text for the images was amusing ... If anyone knows the real names for any of the critters pictured then we'd be very happy to re-badge the pictures. Andrew.
  18. Benny said... > ... I had a serious problem with black 'tuft', I guess you > could call it, algae... Nasty stuff, the best way to get rid of it is to work on having less phosphates in your water apparently. Siamese Algae Eaters aka SAEs (the proper ones) eat it, nothing else will touch it. Andrew.
  19. Earlier I said... > A web page of the photos isn't far away. And here it is, go to the 'critters' link here: http://www.oxalis.50megs.com Sorry about the pop-ups etc, eventually I'll get my own site that doesn't need ads... Thanks to Ang for the HTML. Andrew.

The roof on my sleepout carport is looking a bit sad, that's for sure... Andrew.

  24. Matthew said... > i ended up with 2 males and 4 females, which was exactly > what i was after. Congratulations. A good ratio. I'd be happy. I was worried they might be Sid Smithies excess males. I'm out with the daughter of a LFS owner tomorrow night so may ask if I can get some. Friends in low places are good things to have > ... what would people advise to feed the killies as there main > staple diet. Adults are so small your options are limited. I'd advise bbs and grindal worms. Daphnia and newly hatched mosquito larvae are good but hard to use as a staple. Good luck. Keep me in mind for any fry you might end up with. Be warned, you may become addicted to killies.... Andrew.
