use silica sand, inert and non reactive. looks goodalso brightens the tank. light reflects from it and makes the tank double bright! i use silica in all my tanks, love the look! but maybe not the best for plants? dont nkow, my plnts have slowed in growth after transferring from seachem fluorite pots to the sand substrate. but maybe roots need to re establish.

i am gonna plant my tank heavier wtih amazon swords as i love the look fo them. anyways, i currenty will have a clay ball under eaqch plant.... what else can i do in my tank conditions to make their growth faster? amazons are root nutriet absorbing plants ... excell? will that work? i have a high turnover in my system

quantifying eheim substra pro, versus cheaper alternative, youw ould need much more cheaper alternative to replace eheim products. a mix is good. eheim substra pro has served me extremely well, but i mix and match. but yes, they are expensive!

Fraser says "syphilius." are we talking bout fish or an STD?

clown loaches, are small 3cm max. eating very well i feed aro sticks, and aro never eats clealy, chews and about 20% falls tot he floor. so they catch it mid fall. you can see them eat it, i am confident they will get big quick! CONFIDENT! also munching enthusiastically on discus beef mix! I up'd the water change cycle to at least 200% a week turnover! or more:D 2 canisters

JDM style? whats that? Japanese Domestic Model?..... 8) anyway well, tis still too small, when it gets bigger, may separate. for now, being in a tank by itself its a waste of power. saving 15 dollars a week turning that tank off:D his colours look way nicer in the big tank too, lighting plus the othe fish makes him colour up! nice reds on him, gotta come see in the big tank, his reds are more prominant. He is feeding from surface already knife had slight agro, but gone now, some nips but they will swim together and past each other with no demonstrations or challenging each other. the high spotted clown feeds more aggressively than the other broken jaw one. i think it will get bigger, its already bigger than my otehr one. so im feeding it up! \

thanks Elmo My next long term project. High grade red in a 1200Litre tank:) Maybe with a bed of clown loaches. i got 42 now:D

yeah and how big a fish they can swallow. also, its almost like they automatically descale the fish when sawllowed lol interesting anyways, i like them, very intersting animals. a tank full of them would be cool
-
eyah, but ti hink they are not biting predators, theya re inhaling predators. the aro bit my finger the other day, hurt, not too bad but broke skin lol but the dat, if you look at how they catch fish, they actually inhale the fish when its still 2 to 3 cms away from their mouth. i dont even think they use their lips to grasp fish...
-
contrast:D typo yeah, the indo, i find does a CLAP sound when it takes pellets, but the AT, when it takes to the ball of meat, WOW! its like someone in the tank is hitting a rock. thumping sounds. the indo and the AT eat what ever goes in the tank!

i am actually hopeless at packing. LFS packed it, bagged it, boxed and sent it for me. I have faith he will be ok! strong fish that one. The others - the small turq has developed more in colour since i got it,t he colour was not as full when i initiall got it. the otheres i am pretty sure wont grow that much more - fed good food too. Leopard is a nice colour and pattern too, the small one. just keep the others:) dont give them up! lol My fav is the big cobalts and the snow leopard!!

if his breathing is slwo and not gasping, eyes reacting.... then i would suggest its jsut stress. update us regularly, i hope he makes it too !!! be awesome swimming in your planted tank!
-
when if irst got him, he was the msot stressed too, ig uess being so big he dosent like being in small buckets or bags. now you know why i put him on his own in a massive bag by himself in his own poly box. couldnt risk a smalle rbag! the fins must have pricked the bags, They were triple bagged. Im glad the others landed fine! I would turn all lights off and put a black or dark coloured cloth over the tank,a nd just wait. Unfortunately, like yous aid, shipping is always relatively risky.... he is a big boy, maybe a bucket load of stress zyme or melafix? i wouldnt change water - that would stress him out more, i reckon just leave him and hope for the best. thats what i would do.
-
The tank may e too small. if ist nitrates, then you probably dont have a problem witht he earlier two of the cycle, amonia and nitrite. lots of water changes is needed!
-
i bought them today to expand my school of 22 clown loaches. they are in a grow out tank, also for quarantine reasons. im gonna try the henward BEEFER diet:D discus beef herat mix, NLS discus pellets then thera a 1mm pellets with 250% water change a week:D hope they get big soon!

In one tank, i have about 40 fish. Large fish in another i have 30 fish. All are crystal clear No carbon i do however, in a system of 2500 Litres have 2x Sump filtration from overflow 1x fluval 404 3x fx5 1x fluval 4 internal .... so its very clear its your filtration. get a canister. Guaranteed will fix it, unless its an algae problem.

it swallowed the locust ok. and its very interested in my finger and the FD Shrimp. I will just ensure it has energy i guess. maybe still full, the clown loach must been sizeable.
-
Ok, The other day, as my post previously, my arowana (RTG)seemed to have eaten a clown loach.Usually pretty chilled, no aggression to anything, but i know they can be opportunistic and maybe the clown loach got too adventurous towards its mouth or something or injured perhaps and slower than usual. I had 18, and upon relocating them, i only caught 17. I woke up and it had something in its mouth, as if tring to swallow a big piece of shrimp, got home, fat belly, seems content. I know clown loaches have a spine on the eye. It seemed to have swallowed it fine. On that evening, it also ate FD SHRIMP - whcih means it can swallow. I gave it a day of fasting to ensure it digested loach properly. But, is it a possibility that its throat was wounded during the swallowing process? My reasons for asking is this. I feed my bichirs a frozen ball of minced beef heart (works well, i sugges tyou try it) i do this so the other mid swimming fish wont eat the beef heart, bichirs and TT EEL bit into it, and rip little pieces off that has thawed.. Anyways, my aros primary diet is peeled shrimp, Then i feed it FD Krill for arowanas and Locusts whcih i breed. Occasionally, it will eat bits of the mince beef heart that falls off from the ball of meat i feed the bottom dwellers. Today, It will eat the FD Krill, It will eat the tiny chunks of beef.... But it refused the shrimp, it seemed to struggle to push it down the throat - probably cos its not as smelly and tasty as beef and FD SHRIMP, it spat it out. I put a pinch of FD Shrimp, it ate it no problems, I saw it eat pieces of BH. But not shrimp. So i tried locust - usually locust it willd evour with in seconds..... swallows it wtih no issues AT ALL. today, it bit it, and tried to swallow it and struggled. Didnt spit it out, cos it loves locusts, but.... its struggling to swallow - Eventually it probably will as it forces it down its throat... But, is it possible that this aro has a sore throat and cannot easily swallow large food right now? I mean, positive here is that it is eating - and it follows my hand and is hungry... But i am worried, its my most prized fish!!! Has anyone experienced this. Also, im sure it would but can anyone tell me if this will heal? Common sense says it does, but i guess i need some opinions. I will let it not eat too much for the next couple days and let its throat heal. Anything else i can do?

int eh wild, beardies and blueys, probably more beardies as blueys are slow. will eat beetles ofa ll forms in the wild. i wouldnt feed small lizards like leopard geckos beetles though, but in saying that, mine has eaten a couple before.... no harm done.
