  1. hahaha David - you are a tough one! hahaha i find there are people with good knowledge in Animates sometimes, but more likely than not, i found them to be focused entirely on selling add ons and upselling you. Though i understand, all LFS must do this to make money, but they seem to focus on that and not the fish. But then again, they are not fish specialists - more puppies birds etc.
  2. no thats a bit big. i would say an 8 to 10 foot length. 4 foot by 4 foot would suffice for a while their growth rate slows way more when they reach 70 cms. then its not as pronounced long term,w ell.... they dont really even nkow the max size of them as they keep growing apparently. i would say a pool or pond would be ideal. a converted pool
  3. they get massive easily. eats anything anytime. the msot unpicky fish youc anp robably own and fast growers. heavy, true tank busters ay. apparently they taste wonderful too.
  4. haha, had this problem, 20 slippery clown loaches.....took more tahn 2 hours!!! remove EVERYTHING fromt eh tank. IF needed reduce water level. use massive nets. 2 of them. and in some scases, the fish just needs to get tired out. when you tire out the fish, you will catch them easily. with big fish, i use a onion sack or a fishing net. i used a onion sack with the arowana, smooth fibres. easy
  5. i love pacus want a few one day, but tank must be big. maybe one day for my silver aro comm tank:D
  6. sold for 2200, good value! didnt get it in the end but onelucky punter certainly got a bargain!! wonder who it is:D comeo n now, if a member here, come out and show us pics and details!!
  7. thats insane, never seen thsoe teeth before. but i know theya re hard to see normally but they are there.
  8. their teeth comes out as they bite down, they are there, but not as visible as piranhas. they crack nuts and things like that. i had one awhile back - grows quickly, eats everythign and very strong jaws. in fact, my one ate two plecos
  9. I add sea salt, grade 22 course salt by dunninghams. you get it in 25 kg sacks for 1.10 per kg. i get 100kg at a time. very cheap lasts me ages! i put them in 3 times a weak to replenish minerals and trace in the tanks. a bit old fashioned i know but i dont get sick fish often at all. last one was a fungal infection with my six bar which was more than a year ago. and fish are always full of life and healthy. i use straight tap water too to wc.
  10. i called yates and they said its pure peat no additives, out of the ground into the bag. i looked at it and there is nothingt but peat. in gridients said nothing else. but yeah, did bump it up. its ok, no biggie, stopped using it.
  11. tap is almost unreadable to be honest in my area. very light orage oderline yellow. probably 5ppm max. my tanks are always around 15ppm or below. 20 plus is high in my tanks. thats probably why my plants dont do too well 40 seems a bit high IMO, i want rapid growth as fast as possible especiallyw ith the clowns
  12. yeah my water wasnt that dark, just a yelliwhs tinge the water in a test tube was definitely clear to the eye. test kit turns into orage towards dark red if nitrate is high found nitrate was higher when i put peat, my nitrate is always extremely low, but went up suddenly overa period of 3 days.
  13. nitrate climbed when peat was used. and its a catch 22, nitrate goes up, the more peat i use, water browns but i have to replace water more to dilute the nitrates. so..... kinda useless lol i think indian almond leaf is better in this browning, it doesnt increase nitrates like peat does! shame, peat is cheaper
  14. eyah, your stuck swtih scratches. i had a scruber that had a fine stone on it, scratchedi t. lesson..... always check the scrubber:d
  15. the clown loach river set up is cool, rigged to go one flow and one flow only. pretty neat. i love the 'biotopes' but not my type of fish - i would need soemthing bigger. but a planted or bio top show piece tank inside the lounge would be nice! someting low maintenance in termsof water changes. (i am messy with water changes)
  16. wow inspires me to have one. in the lounge one day, perhaps.
  17. There will not be much if any difference in tanning a jardini. But in saying that, all fish change colour with the sun. that is the principle of tanning Some believe tanning silvers work and darkens some tones. but in saying that, is it worth it. I dont believe tanning a jar will make a difference as its generallya lready dark unless you get one tahts very silver. i think you can either put light or dark substrate to lighten or darkne the colour to your desire.
  18. mmm something very foreign to me.... but interesting notion none the less 8) i must admit, would be good, cos water changes would be minimal also. would be a nice lounge show piece.
  19. i love the second one! these tanks seem like they are designed for minimal fish >?
  20. havent seen it, but will definitely consider it! i will check when i et back home:D
  21. i find other loac hes dont school with clown loaches. i tried. maybe just me
  22. thats true roskill hff has specials 10 bux a pop
  23. Ok in my balck aro/clown loach tank - therer are 4x power glo. before there was masses of black algae, and they seem to be peeling off and dying. probably cos bulbs are gettin older and output of uv is less. but still jsut as bright. When i put peat in the tank set up, the water browned and i found the clown loaches are more active. i believe this is the dimming of lights mixed with perhaps softer nicer water for them. In the tank, amazon sword, twisted vals and a piece of wood with a nice set of anubias nana on it. I was thinking of reducing light from 4 to 2 bulbs. will this will my plants? Or will the plants just grow slower and some maybe grow longer to get moer light? My priority has become to make the clowns more active as im happy with the plant amount and content in the tank. I know that it will certainly help with black beard algae which is starting to go away now. but i dont want to killt he plants, albeit slow growth rates - thats ok, so long as the clowns are more active. will twister vals grow longer to get mroe light? or just grow slower or not grow at all by reducing light? 3 weeks after the anubias was introduced, i saw 3 new leaves come out, i nkwo 1 leaf a month is considered ok growth for these plants?
  24. do a clown tank, 50 clown loacheS:d wicked seeing them in a big school!
  25. I personally think that african cichlids will harass the senegals, unless tank is big enoughw tih hiding spots. but africans can be abit overzealous
