  1. regardless of what I do it is still quite entertaining to see what the male(I think) does to protect the eggs. he has already had a fight with my tough siamese tiger and he didnt come out on the worse end. Infact he took a few scales off the siamese tiger.
  2. are cichlids good parents? will the fry get eaten- although the chromides have attacked and scared off the much larger guant gourami with ease.
  3. my chromides have just layed eggs on a rock and are guarding them! what amazing luck i had, that I got a male and a female. they have been guarding the rock against intruders for about 2 days now and appear to have dug a pit near the rock. for those that want to know my pH is 7.2 and I have 1tsp of salt per 10 litres, suprisingly the other fish seem to like it.

    chromide

green chromides need brackish water and can tolerate salt for a while i think. how the hell can they say that they are doing fine? going from what i saw they look bloody awful. and they dont know what brackish water is! its like last time i was up they had a juvenile siver arowana, maybe you can back me up here midas, but anyone could have walked off the street and bought it even though they get to 4'. They are way more interested in money when it comes to issues like that. i feel that a lot of shops now should be asking how big yor tank is and what sort of fish you have in it. the old story of having a 50l and someone coming in and buying a juvenile oscar. infact have any of you been to the botanical gardens in wgtn? for a while there people were dumping unwanted fish into the tropical indoor pond with the swordtails in it. they found a nearly 2' plec in the pond!

    chromide

yeah back to the chromides- its sad that indeed WP do have them in FW, when i went up to PN for the hurricanes game i had a look at them. they had about 10 all in the same freshwater tank and all looking in bad health. as i said it is sad because they are nice looking fish usually. i feel they need to setup a brackish section of wet pets so then they can properly accomodate such fish as the green chromide. they could also get some archers! I think i was very lucky to get one earlier on this year from hollywood fish farm- I have never seen or heard of one since!

    chromide

ok here you are pegasus. this is continued from name that fish 19. what fish stores actually have specialised brackish tanks? there are none in wellington, but I know that hollywood fish farm does as I have got my archer and orange chromide from them. The green chromides looked really bad when I was last up there. does anyone know how big green chromides will get anyway?
  9. i suppose the water out of the tap is brown thats why wet pets uses a RO system for thier tanks

    botia lovers

yeah I am a botia lover! I have 2 clown loaches that I have had for two years and are ~5" very slow growers! I used to have a botia modesta, a badass fish! he wasted a couple of fish in my tank including my beautiful siamese fighter. So you are in wellington, where about? I agree with you in saying you shouldnt give them to a pet store here. Infact I have got most of my fish from hollywood fish farm, i have got an archer(very cool fish) a giant gourami a orange chromide and a siamese tiger. I have had my siamese tiger from them for about 1 month now and he along with my fire eel is my favourite fish. Although i payed a pretty penny for him! So your also a puffer lover ay? I am sure you could get a giant or nile puffer but as I said on another post at 2'+ they would be able to take a finger off!
  12. this doesnt really answer your questin but- when I was last up in wet pets there was a big sign on the wall saying DO NOT USE MANAWATU TAPWATER FOR YOUR AQUAIRUM or something like that. hahahaha I dont have that problem here!

The archer likes frozen bloodworms and cichlid tucker. i just stick onto the cover and he shoots it down or jumps out and gets it. Although he has some competition now the giant gourami is around, the gourami is a really good jumper! and a real guts.

  20. pegasus, have you seen on the net for the plans of making an aquarium completely out of plywood. I thought I might try and make a 5x2x2 tank for my growing giant gourami and fire eel. With regards to what to paint on the plywood to stop it from falling apart, on your tanks do you use epoxy paint?

    inanga

I had a look on the niwa website that showed what the distribution of Inanga is and it showed they are present in Northland, so they must be able to withstand 18 degree water temperature.

    inanga

how would you go about catching them though? I have been to a few rivers and have only seen a few common bullys. The giant kokopu looks like quite a beautiful fish, but niwa said it is rare now.
