  1. For larger pieces of wood I have screwed chunks of lead flashing to the bottom, its the stuff used on corogated iron roofs. Just remember the screws will rust in a few months, it doesn't hurt the fish but the lead will of course come loose. The other trick I have used it a bit of plastic pipe jammed between one of the top braces and the wood, looks ugly for a month or two, but when the wood is water logged it can be removed.
  2. 2x204 is far bigger (and likely cheaper) that 1x404. More media, more flow. plus the advantages I said before.
  3. For me on a tank that size I would go 2xfluval 204's, one on its own will be too small, the bigger models do a bit of a jump in price. And there are so many advantanges to having two filters. redundancy if one breaks down can clean one at a time so dont risk upsetting the tank too much one can be moved onto another tank for hospital/cycling etc far better performance from 2x204 than 1x304

    Maybe they are shy??

    ICH

Same family differnet bug, life cycle etc the same. From memory there are actually 3 different types of marine ICH, not sure how many types of fresh water. Anyway I guess the point is, that you cant tranfer fresh water ICH to a salt water tank and viseversa

    LIGTHING

The name manifacturs (gezz my spellings crap today) ius a bit meaning less. You wanta look for a tude thats 6500K or higher, as the number goes up they get bluer, so it just depends on your tastes. Most electric wholesalers have 6500k (k=kelvin) in stock for about $10, these are often called 'daylight' tubes. Marine tubes tend to be 10,000K or higher, if they are white, or there is a blus tube used which is no good for you. I have used grow lux tubes, work but wouldnt bother again they are too red
  7. Hahaha just a bit of teasing, ALL THOSE POSTS IN CAPITALS..... Please don't take it the wrong way Cracker, not trying to wind you up, just a bit of fun.
  8. So hows the QT going??
  9. I'm not really sure how well the refuge/QT would work. surely there are two reasons for QT 1) to check a fish and not let bad stuff into your tank 2) to be able to treat your fish in ways that you wouldn't be able to in the main tank (i.e. use non-reef safe treatments, like copper). Assuming point 2) how would you do this in a tank that was also your refuge? If you used copper etc you would pretty much have to chuck out everything (sand rock etc) from the refuge and start it again, and of course you can't not treat the refuge now because what ever the fish has will also be in the refuge tank?? What sort of time should QT be run for, does it make sense to just do a full treatment instead of waiting two weeks then having to do it away?
  10. Whatever you do dont go down in plumbing size! This will just make things worse. Your 1060 should be fine, I use the same, the top of my tank is over my head so about 2m the actual outlet in the tank would be 1.5-1.7 meters above the pump. I think you problem is that you are just trying to do too many things with it, every foot of plumbing, bend, join, tap, tee, etc etc slows the flow down more. An eheim cannister will make bugger all difference to your flow, depending on the model they are only rated to like 700lph and this is if you have no media no pipes etc, you want to be looking at 1000's of LPH. Also if you want to add a cannister for phos-sorb etc why not get a cheaper one, I use a fluval 204, I ran two of them them on my fresh water tank for a couple of years, and one has now been running on my marine for almost a year, I have never needed to replace a part or haad any problems. You can pick them up for under $100 off trademe, and anyway because you using it to hold chemical media, it doesn't really matter if its off for a few days like it would if it was a bio filter. However I would be looking at a fluidized filter, I have just ordered one from oceanworkz (or whatever they are called) cost me about $150 landed for the larger size.
  11. What a great idea! Only down side for seawater is the need to use titanium pipes, which I'm guessing would get a bit pricy!
  12. The hutt pet shop is pretty good but it helps if you know what your looking for and have plenty of time, cause the staff are often pretty busy and there is stuff everywhere. I also like the pet house in coastlands, not a huge shop but Raymus gets in fish etc that aren't so common in a lot of other shops, plus he has some Marine fish

Well be stress, the tanks too quite, be making the fish nervous.....

    Clownfish

Not completely ture, there is a guy at Coastland (Raymus, at the pethouse) who has a limited range, but worth going to have a look.

    Clownfish

the only shop in wellington is raymus at pethouse in coatlands. hes a really nice guy and sells some good stuff but just beware he is very old school. likes biofilters and stuff that isn't really used anymore. live rock is different from live corals althrough live rock does come from dead coral. bascially it is coral rock, the live part is the bacteria living inside the rock. Sugest you don't try anemones until you have had a setup running for a while (6 months plus) you don't 'need' one to keep clown fish.
  16. I dont use my taps often, but when I do I really don't want them to be stiff, cause theres normally water heading for the floor!

    Seio bashers

I have been runing an 820 for around 6 months, on a timer turning on/off every 15 minutes, has a very brief rattle at startup, never not started.
  18. Can I just email the forms to Warren or do I have to sign the hardcopy and mail it?? Also do you still need a pajama cardinal? I have 3 but don't have a fish reference book to quote page and ISBN number. I also have what I beleive is a Red Blenny - Portuguese blenny ( Parablennius ruber ) but very difficult to get a good picture of it you need it, again would need page/ISBN number

    congrats

Well done dude, I'm sure your Wife played some small part to, so congrats to her as well
  20. I read that cuttle fish have to be kept in tall round tanks, which makes them pretty impactical for home tanks. Its something to do with the cornings confusing them and stressing them to death
  21. jetskisteve has a dosing pump for sale, this is the safest easiest way to topup IMO

    Shindig

Maybe you could scrap some of the crud off the BBQ?? I don't really have room at my place, or a BBQ for that matter! Go the grand Wellington mini big tank tank tour of 2005.....

    Shindig

I haven't seen yours either so maybe we should have it at your place?? lol yeah my place is fine, I'm actually in the process of setting up a new tank but theres not much to see at the moment just some of the stand. Pies, SteveA and I all live within 10 minutes of each other, how about a mini tank tour?
  24. I tried a mirror behind my discus tank once but it really spooked the fish they might have gottem used to it or perhaps would have reacted better if I'd put it in when I set the tank up. I guess they were used to going to the back for security and then suddenly there were 'other' fish back there.
  25. Discus and angels can't be kept together as the angels carry parisites that don't affect them be will cause endless problems with the discus. 4 of 1 or the other would be ok in a tank that size but even besides the reason above 4 of both would be pushing it, Discus are very messy fish but like very clean water
