    Suphews tank

No that one is hidden aound the back of the center rock work, doing well and has split into two now. But almost imposible to see. :-? It was sucked into the closed loop intake, I'm stil surprised it hurt it, must have been weak from the move, the intake is about 15cm of 32mm pressure pipe and only has a 1060 so I didn't thing there would have been that much current being pulled through it.

    Suphews tank

Sorry about the quality a friend has borrowed my camera for a month so had to use my phone. I added some sand last night so is looking a little better now.
  4. I have an almost 6 foot tank with 4 foot sump under it (total over 800 liters) on my hardwood floors with no problems. My house was built in 1846, state houses were built pretty solid I don't think you will have any problems. Just check that you have a piles and/or beams under where you want to put it.
  5. I still think putting in two smaller filters is a better idea, give you redundancy, less likely to have problems when cleaning, better spread of flow in the tank, and often far more filtation.

    hello

Yeah I was picking majano to. Bad news
  7. ops sorry didnt spot it was an old tread
  8. For a tank that size I would look at T5 ligthing if if you really want to go hard MH. But T5 would do the job, if you use T8 you will have to have so many of them to light the tank enough for plants you wont be able to get in the top. You can get the T5 batton fittings from any electical wholesaler should only be $40 odd each. I would go 4foot because the bulb will be easier and cheap to get. I'm using 3 foot on my marine tank and getting the bulbs is a pain.

    the ''tingle''

couple of things, I think (its been a while since I studied this stuff) that it is inductance not capactiance you are talking about, basically capitance is energy between two seperated conductors one positive one negative. Inductance is electrical energy transfered usually (?) via a magnetic field. The other thing I wanted to say is DONT STUFF ROUND WITH THIS STUFF!!! It could be just inductance or it could be something broken that is about to kill you, without buying an RCD and/or testing every thing you will never know until it kills you. You are giving the impression that the tingle is normal and OK. this MIGHT be the case but it MIGHT not, as responsible reef keepers we should be advising everyone to install an RCD and make sure they are safe not tell them its just a tingle dont worry about it. Spending $10k on a tank then dieing because you are too tight to spend $90 on an RCD would have to about be the stupidest thing Ive ever heard of
  10. yep is all good, you dont even need to take it out of the water just bung it on
  11. I do mine every 6 months or so, funny thing I just did it today, was full of sponges and snails

    flatworms

does anyone know what flatworms eat?? I used to have quite a few in my old tank, now that it just has rock, the odd coral, snails and mysis srimp etc they have all gone? wish i could say the same for my other tank. there was a hermit crab in there for a couple of months while i was baby sitting it could this have eaten them all??
  14. be intresting to know if this works, but im putting my $ on it not working, but would be really good if it did. i haven't ever seen it used even in cheap marine gear. even high grade stainless rusts in marine tanks.
  15. no reason just easier to make and hide in a marine tank. I have seen some cube tanks overseas in the centre of the tank with rock work build round it, that looks amasing but you need a big room to be able to walk right round a tank
  16. i think cleaner shrimp are the way to go, my tangs get the odd spot now and again but never more than 3-4, i see my cleaner shrimp hanging off them whenever they have it
  17. I set up my own over flow, the tank was drilled for me but I have drilled tanks myself before and it is easy, just did one with Pies a couple of weeks ago for his fresh water, 4 holes. if you contact Pete at port nick glass in petone, he charges around $1 per liter to make a custom tank, he makes stands to but not sure what he charges. i would use a shop as a last resort they will charge 2-3 times as much, Pete supplies most of the shops in the lower north island. he wil deliver to u as well. once you know what you are doing with the over flow the hardest part to sort out is the over flow box

    the ''tingle''

the reason you can feel the tingle is because you (ie your body) is creating a path to earth, unless your fish is reaching out touch the ground it shouldnt be a problem for them. however big problems for you, you need to get this sorted asap, if you leave it, it will get worse and sooner or later you will get a proper zap and it could kill you. get yourself an RCD and use it to work out whats shorting out.
  19. Pies and I use a bulge pump we went halfs in from trademe, cost $60 runs off 12v so just plugs into the car takes us about 1/2 hour to collect 400l to do both our tanks, very good investment
  20. If you ever comming down wellington way PM me and you can have a look at how mine is done.
  21. check out www.dursostandpipes.com 90% of salties use these for their overflows. They are a little complicated looking when you first see them, but are very safe and pretty quite. The trick to not having spill is having a sump with enough free space to take the water that will drain from your tank if the power goes out. If you put a syphon hole in your return plumbing just below the water level your tank wil only drain this far. Good luck.
  22. I agree with Helifax, that does sound like a good idea, we all know now, but I know I was confused with some of the comments when I first started here.

    fines filter

I thing the filter wool would be ok, but it would be interesting to know what the felt has has done to it, isn't this made from wool and bleached and washed?
  24. Mine have survived a couple of winters outside in Wellington, I'm in a valley to so it gets pretty cold. I don't put any food in over the winter because the fish slow right down and don't really eat, food would rot in the pond.
  25. IMHO the hutt pet shop is the best in Wellington, but as IRA says the pet house in coastlands is well worth a visit and wet pets is a must see.
