  1. Hey thanks for all that guys! Haven't actually had time to sort this yet but i'll drop into DSE or parallel imports or whatever i go past first & get one of these. I'll get the cigerette lighter one but i may hotwire it under the dash just to keep out of view of bad guys who might covet the mp3 player! Not too expensive either so excellent!
  2. Ha! Well you are onto it Westy, turned out the shaft was much thinner than it should be I think the acid must have eaten into it. So I won't do that again! I pulled the shaft & it snapped at the bottom so I'll have to talk to Reef. Thanks everyone for the help!
  3. What everybody else said but if they are sandy a bucket of water for 24 hours will allow them to spit most of it out. Do not overcook they can get tough. Done right they are one of natures real delicacies. For supremo taste, soon as they are open shell them, and toss in some hot garlic butter then serve.
  4. I will do it if you want to come to the North Shore. Better fess up though my only experience at this is with chickens but pretty sure other birds will be similar. With chickens you only clip one wing so the bird will be unbalanced when it tries to fly. Clip both wings and it's surprising how they can still fly. Best btw, to clip the fully matured feathers rather than still growing ones, that way no blood, and also the bird feels nothing. Our chickens actually liked having it done, they were very friendly and felt like the object of some fuss while it was happening.
  5. Yes that was awesome. What's your job VinsonMassif?
  6. My mp3 player lives in the car it's a hassle to have to charge it on the computer. I've seen some ipod chargers you stick in the cigerette lighter & they have a usb at the other end to charge an ipod. So I've asked the sales person at 2 different outlets if these can be used for a non ipod mp3 player but nobody seems to know. Could assume that usb is the same anywhere, but just to make sure i don't damage my player can anyone confirm if these chargers would do any mp3 player? I have a sony, and a sandisk.
  7. Hmmm... Yes, well it's pretty noisy, more so than when it was new. But I'll take your advice & stick it in the tank & see what happens. Long as my wife doesn't get too stroppy about the noise!
  8. Advice needed, I decided to clean up one of the nano streams, so put it in a tub in a 1% hydrochloric acid solution and ran it. Meant to turn it off after a couple of hours but forgot and left it going for a day or so. Now it's really noisy i can't put it back in the tank. I've pulled it apart but there is nothing obviously wrong that can be seen. Advice anyone?
  9. Oh, well that's good, I've still got a few years fish keeping in me yet then. Anyone else in the over 50 club? 8)
  10. Hah, that would have been me! Normal is relative. Now i live in an area surrounded by upper income, white people. 30 years ago I found such people scary, "different" and could not easily mix in those circles. Now I seem to have joined them! Actually I think that once you scratch through the surface, most people are the same. BTW I'm 53.
  11. By laws in our area are no permission required for up to 12 chooks. No roosters though. No regulation about cages. Obviously common sense would apply and we make sure they do not annoy the neighbours or go on their properties. We also give the neighbours eggs. Our neighbours are not the type who would turn them into casserole, people are capable of communication around here, if there was ever a problem!
  12. Well said Stella, good points. The other thing about raising the school leaving age is it is totally pointless. We are told it's to keep wayward youths off the street & doing something, but most of them been wagging for years already so changing the law to 18 just shows the policy makers are out of touch with reality.
  13. And oh, should have said, the best laying ones are brown shavers. Our last chickens we got as day old chicks that were brown shavers, and would have gone to a battery. So they don't know how lucky they are that we got them LOL! They are excellent layers been bred for that & only eat 1/2 what some other breeds eat. Also very friendly birds they stay with you when you are outside just got to make sure you don't stand on them.
  14. I think you might be saying something that is generally known, but so far, unspoken! A look through peoples pics will reveal a leaning towards young trendy, through to goth. Perhaps it is the Co2 from their planted setups? Something else surprised me, I think I'm the oldest guy on the forum. This was a surprise cos I thought fish would be kept by older people with more leisure time, money etc, but no. But if you want normal, get a marine tank! While fresh water tank keepers are mainly young / trendy / goth / mix of both sexes, marine keepers are mainly male, 20 to 40 ish, and upper income. Although there have been some chics joining the marine thing lately. Weird huh?
  15. Here is our chook house, they roost in it at night there are 2 perches in it & the nest box is on the back, you can just see it, the nest has a lid on so it's easy to get the eggs. The run is too small to keep them locked in so they come & go as they want. It's got wheels as you can see so we can move it and the top of the roof is hinged so we can get access to the perching area if need be. Comfortable accomodation for 8 chooks, 4 on each perch. When I made it I didn't have any plans, just started sawing and nailing and that's what happened. We are on Auckland North Shore, in a suburb, we have more neighbours than the photo makes it look.
  16. Well if or when it happens, let's know!
  17. Yes. Just cut the whole head off and over the next few weeks or months the stalk will grow a new head. The old head can be put somewhere else, they are slow to attach though you need to fix it in place enough to withstand several weeks before it attaches itself.
  18. Pity though, some of those ideas might have worked! I don't think what's being done under our current leadership is working we seem to be on a slippery slope downhill. Don't really agree with the bootcamp idea unless it's done right, which is hard. But if it came in maybe it couldn't be worse than what's being done now.
  19. Not quite all the info you want but this thread might be of some interest. http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/1-vt28 ... sc&start=0
  20. How did this go Matt, you done it yet?
  21. Yes that is the difficult part. People going through these programs and being inspired to change their ways. But when they get out, back to the same old environment, friends and problems etc, and their newfound keenness gradually gets eroded & in a few months it's back to square one. And I know this because in the past i have employed people who went through one of these programs. I did my best to help but when you lived in a crap environment for years, then get dropped back into it old habits are hard to lose. The program, camp, or whatever is 1/2 the battle, the aftercare is the other 1/2. Welfare equals crime? Where did somebody say that?
  22. Hmmm... Yes angels are tougher than they look. But the Naso is small yet & will be much more able to defend himself as he grows. Once they figure out which one is boss the behaviour will probably stop.
  23. Well be great if you could keep us updated Zaita. I had a good try at this a few years ago but in the end was defeated by beaurocracy. Does your co-worker have any info on rotifers in NZ?
