  1. ok ok. forget everything i said about phosphates and bicarbonates. so,.... what is peat moss? and if anyone could tell me how much they are in the garden centre? and what i should say when going to buy it? also how does it work? how much do i need and what are the specifics like how much will it lower my pH? and do i need to do more water changes? and does it run out? and how much do i need? and where bouts in my 3stage external filter do i put it? and does it ever lower pH too far for discus? will i need to clean it? and can you buy it at mitre 10 cause thats the only garden centre i know off :-?
  2. oh, thanks for clarifying  any one since its a phosphate wont that make water soft? if any wants to make water soft then soap or detergent or washing powder is a good way to go. if you have a garden its best have your washing maching drain into a big drum and water your garden with it. i my self have never measured water hardness in my tank but if you put a pinch of washing powder or a drop of dishwashing liquid in a bucket of tap water you can measure the hardness and then calculate how much you need for you tank. not sure what makes water hard if i can remember then it may be the lever of salinity (salts) not table salt but solute particles. but this is theory till a know for sure.
  3. hi, kim whats bright water? hey maddog, i thought sodium bicarbonate raises your ph? isnt that baking soda?
  4. hi everybody just hoping anyone had any for sale. i posted a topic in the private trade and exchange for some but though i mite reach more people here aswell.
  5. yeah, i used to keep them in pH7 and there colours and growth rate wasnt too good. i noticed since i changed the tank and put them in by themselves with pH6-6.5, there colours are really showing strong and they look much happier cause they really stretch the fins out and they look so beautiful. although it maybe because they are by themselves now. i guess i'll keep them at pH7 for a time and see how they go and if they look a bit down then i guess its peat time. cheers everyone
  6. hi, thanks for replying but whats peat and where can i get it from. is it cheap? cheers
  7. hey, just wandering if you could use vinegar to lower ph in a disus tank, i worked it out as 10ml of cider vinegar (what i had in a house) in a 9litre bucket of tap water will bring tap water pH=7 to pH=6. what do you guys think? dangerous?
  8. hi, i currently upload my photos at communitywebshots and have reached my limit and thought "STINK!" so am looking for another site that lets me upload alot more photo's, but for FREE. any suggestions???? what site do you use????
  9. i just moved on friday. it took me three days and my main tank is still at my old house and im bringing it over today, i basically setup and empty tank with a quarter old water and filled the rest up with new and brang half my filters over to cycle the tank. i put my guppies and sword in first and ran the tank over night, the next day i did the big move and brought my discus and other fish over, (no casualties ) went back and did a big clean up of the old tank (algae and gravel) man it took me hours to clean the gravel, there was so much build up on SH!T, now im going to get that tank today and set it up with a proper amozon them, of to the LFS to get at least 20 neon tetras and have them cycle the tank for a day or two. anyway hope your move goes well, the hardest thing to move is tank aye so good luck
  10. i had my doubts to, hence my question that he/she couldnt really answer properly, he also states that they sell breeding pairs in LFS  he still has more questions to answer. i've got 6 CL and it took really long time to get my biggest one to 8cm. but still,.... im a keep mine and hopefully have a pair from them, then i will be the king to me

    DISCUS HELP

i woke up this morning to find that 2 of my discus are floating at the surface, they are still alive but cant seem to hover, is this their swim bladder? i have upped the bubbles in the tank cause they were breathing at the top. should i be worried about the two that are floating?
  17. sorry rob but i have to disagree , mayflies have three tails and there are so many species in the genus family that they havent been all named yet, a good friend on mine studies macroinvertabrates and i have aided him at auckland uni of tech, its definately a stonefly because of the two tails. infact if you call waitakere city council they will give you a free booklet on them. there are many types of stoneflies, and they all look very different but they are defined by their two tails as mayflies are defined with there 3 tails. some are herbivourous and some carnivourous but they will definately not eat a guppy fry. try niwa's or doc's website, im sure they will have more about them. oh and carryl, my suggestion is not to bother catching them because my guess is they will do no harm, plus they will keep coming back because your pond is so healthy, any these are larvae and soon will grow wings and fly away only to come back and lay somemore :-? plus they feed on on smaller things like the daphnia.
  18. if my memory serves me well from my freshwater ecology paper, its not a mayfly and its not a caddis fly. so my theory is that it is a stone fly, they are used as indicators to establish the health of the streams. if they're in there then its a good sign you pond is healthy and clean. they are no threat to fry and in fact they are a good source of nutrition. you can find more about them here http://www.waitakere.govt.nz under macroinvertebrates.

  23. heres my tank, can you name the middle plant and the ones on the outside(the bushy ones)
  24. hi, well,....its been properly set up for about 3-4 months, i've notice those plants on the outside have really taken off, i run a viaaqua, the biggest one, it does 1200l/hr, a millenium filter which is connected to the leftside of the under G filter, a wavemaker connected to the right side of the under G filter.
