Silverdollarboy2 reacted to fishyNZ in Convict Cichlids
Female convicts have orange coloration on their bodies especially the belly area and get more pronounced when breeding. Adult males are usually bigger and can have nuchal humps.

Silverdollarboy2 reacted to Caryl in Algae issue and new fish
The tank layout does look nice but I am concerned the plants in there may not be aquatic. Of course, if they are actually synthetic then it isn't a problem :-)
Minnows are fine in both cold and tropical tanks.
Keep to a few small fish for an aquarium of that size. I always suggest people get more of one species rather than a few of several species. Get more minnows. Good starter fish would be guppies, platys, any of the small tetras, rasboras and a couple of ancistrus for the bottom level, or 3 small corydoras.

Silverdollarboy2 reacted to thecap in New set up - the journey
Its been a while, but finally had the chance to redo my 200L fish tank and have converted it to a high tech set up. Moved all my other fish into another 200L that has been hanging in the garage.
Plan is to have a Iwagumi style with 40-50 Neon tetras and 10 Oto's.
Substrate - 5 kg JBL planting substrate 21 kg seachem fluorite black sand, random black rocks
Plants - Glossostigma Elatinoides, Dwarf hair grass and 3x Alternanthere Reineckii - roseafoila
Filter- Aqua One 1200
Lighting - one 49w Aquq one plant glo
Co2- 2 bubbles per second
Ferts - NPK 20ml and seachem flourish 5 ml starting every 2 days
As per I get to excited to get going so after work I started, got it filled up and planted by about 2am. Lost a bit of contour in the process but I am happy with the result.
Will post up dates as it progresses and the troubles on the way to hopefully what I want :-)

I recently got a young male to pair with my female GT and now have a female? Jack Dempsey in a grow out tank.
The oscars seem to be the hardest to get photos of, they never stop moving.

Breeding Chocolate Fish
Cocoa pisces (deliscioso)
I recently managed to acquire a trio of Chocolate fish to try breeding with,
A melanistic male, a normal female and an albino female.
Breeding Tank parameters.
Minimum size 100 litres
Temperature under 18 centigrade otherwise they get soft and lethargic.
PH neutral to soft.
I used chocolate sprinkles as substrate and fed them Cadbury Flake food to condition them for breeding.
These fish usually spawn in caves laying a large egg mass which the male guards for7 days before they hatch.
Egg mass.
Once the fry hatch I remove the parents just in case they are tempted to eat them.
Picture of newly hatched fry.
I feed the fry fine particles of food, this is easily achieved by grating a chocolate bar on a kitchen grater.
I hope this article helps you achieve breeding these sweet fish.
Fry ready for sale.

Silverdollarboy2 reacted to Ira in Fish ID help
My father in law bought me a fish for my Bday, can anyone help ID it?
It doesn't move around a lot, and it's getting harassed a bit by the other fish. I think it might be a female bristlenose?
Here's another pic, I think it's trying to dig around in the sand for food.

Unfortunately, I found it dead this morning with a big chunk bitten out of it. I'm not sure which fish killed it, but I'm thinking it was probably one of the severums.

Well after almost a year the Kokopu's new tank is being water tested/set up.
If all goes well it should have fish by tomorrow.

Silverdollarboy2 reacted to Shilo in Kokopu Not Eating
Mines also gone off its regular food. Could be change of season with the water warming up. It does this now and again so not too worried about it (Nitrates <10ppm before water change & no ammonia or nitrites). But a change of food especially live food gets it eating now and again, currently its earthworms. They have to be wiggling right past its nose before it decides to eat. The fish is healthy and apart from not eating hasn't changed its behaviour at all so not a problem. The previous times it stopped eating for a few weeks it would suddenly go on a binge & eat everything in sight (which is why I don't have anymore small fish in the tank)......

Silverdollarboy2 reacted to Caryl in Mini fish profile - Odessa barb
Odessas and Ancistrus are all I have left in my 4ft tank of geriatric fishes. Not all are old though as both keep reproducing. I have bred them outside in a kiddie pool over summer and the results are bigger, brighter Odessas!

Earthworms are always a good option. Or mealworms if your lfs keeps them in stock.
