    Spanish moss is cool and survives quite well in cages hanging from branches, also maybe some wind grasses ect.

    I agree with the native geckos part, plus when you get the permit the geckos are FREE

    A few thousand dollars worth of equipment? i'd say you could get away with a heat pad for $40, old aquarium on trade me $30, and some calcium/vitamins for $20 :-?

Make sure when you make a cage not to make the doors to small like i did and add pots of liquid under each support leg so ants have a hard time getting in. .

    I think it's about $20 now and it unlocks pretty much everything you need to know. They also send out booklets which have care sheets and other interesting things. Also if you create a thread on the paying members section asking for forest or green geckos, you're almost guaranteed to get some.

    Have you joined http://forum.reptiles.org.nz/? It costs a bit for the membership, but i found it very easy to find people with geckos.
