  1. I will do the gh and kh now. havent done that in a while actually. balls..... my kit isnt reading right. might be out of date now. Their temp is 26 which i know is high for them. but it has always been that way and find it wierd for them to suddenly after years of being there start getting this lurgy. yep pandas. nope no excel or anything. yep nitrite is at 0, i have had it running since april, it has a external filter and i seeded it with my old filter noodles too and was very careful to slowly add the fish. much to my partners upset having millions of tanks running in our house for months. wonder if the test is reading right then?
  2. really? i am pleased about that but also still a little lost just tested again ammonia is 0. maybe a little greenish tinge but no where near the 0.25 level nitrate-0 nitrite-0 ph- a smidge over 6,
  3. This is the one that died 24 hours later last week I hope i have done this right http://s1299.photobucket.com/user/leahl ... c.jpg.html and these are the newest sick one.see the bits sticking off it. this is the start. http://s1299.photobucket.com/user/leahl ... b.jpg.html http://s1299.photobucket.com/user/leahl ... 3.jpg.html are we still thinking columnaris?
  4. thanks for your reply, yes i think i may add some salt to see how they go. Thanks for the guide of dosage rate too. Its always nice to know when a treatment has worked personally for someone. other than just wing-ing it and hoping for the best. poor buggers!
  5. yes i did think that it may be water issues but have been testing it and doing heaps of water changes. everything is perfect. I have a big testing kit which has never been used so much since i got this big tank It does have movement in the tank as the plants sway and get blown around in the current if not secured. I am guessing this is good enough flow? i took a picture last night of another cory that is looking like its on its way to rest in peace. i will try and work out how to post it on here so you have an idea of what it looks like when it starts. Just incase i am wrong in my diagnosis.
  6. hello all, me again. I think this is the section that i am always writing in. i dont seem to have much luck these days. sooooooooo i have a group of corys that are slowly karking it over time. They get a fungus looking film on them then little white spike looking things (columns) on them, and then they die within 42 hours. i have had 2 corys, one bristlenose, and 3 other fish die in the last 3 months. the bristlenose had sores on it then got better, then karked it. and now i am watching my corys die one by one. about a week apart. what can i treat a 500 litre tank with to help this not pass to its other inhabitants. The water parameters are good, no ammonia spikes or nitrate issues. do i need to treat the whole tank too? if so with what? i have seen furan 2 but it would take be 5 boxes to treat. should i put some salt in even thought the corys hate it? and so do my plants. any help or tips would be appreciated. :tears: i dont want to be too late
  7. just found some on Hollywoodfishfarm wondering if I should buy praziquantel or levamisole? mmmm
  8. She is in between the 3 size wise. They are all about 8 months old or so. I have one bigger one about 11cm who is the brother/sister of the skinniest one. He is most def the boss in the tank and does give her and the other one (who is the smallest) a bit of grief. He obviously gets the most food of all. The small one is 7cms still gives the big guy a challenge though and still comes out for a swim even if he has been chased away numerous times. He doesn't seem to be growing much either and he gets a good amount of beef heart and various bits. He is looking a bit thin too compared to the big fat one. The smallest one seems to be lovely to the skinny one. The only spare tank I have up and running at the moment is a tank with 6 young redmaps in. About 12 weeks old. I didn't really want to put her in there just incase it is worms and effects them too and I have nothing on hand to fix it fast. Thanks, any help or ideas would be good
  9. Thanks I will have a ring around to see what I can get. :bggrn:
  10. Hi all, I am hoping you may be able to help me. I have a very skinny discus who now hides at the back of my tank and has lost her personality. She is still eating a bit but doesnt have the enthusiasm that she used to for food. I am guessing she may have internal parasites as there is no other signs on the outside of her body other than she is looking more like a supermodel. How can I help her?? The other two that are in with her seem to be fine at the moment. Presuming the whole tank she is in needs to be wormed?. Its a 500 litre tank with corys in too. Have tried raising the temps and water changes and what not but nothing seems to be helping!! I don't seem to catch her pooing either to check for any obvious signs. where in Tauranga can I get praziquantel??? "I am guessing??" from? Does anyone have any ideas? or other options? Scared I am going to lose her and the others down the line. any help would be much appreciated. Thanks
  11. oooh I think we may have cracked it. So after 3.5 hours of pulling it apart over and over, vaselining everything. spilling various amounts of water around my house, swearing a little and roaring now and again, I think its done! just incase anyone is on the search of a option to try if it ever happens to them. Here it is. It was leaking everytime I pumped to get the air out too. so we got the screwdriver out and pulled it apart again dried and cleaned every little section till they were bone dry, o'ring, top bit of canister at the top so there wasn't a drop of water or Vaseline anywhere. It was the last option to start again from fresh just to see and WALLA. I am a very happy bunny here hopefully It will stay that way- fingers and toes crossed. Thanks for your tips people I am just so happy it is working again  :happy1:
  12. so yours leak when the power isn't on too? I am trying Vaseline. I am a little scared that if the power was to go off in the middle of the night that there would be water all over the floor. I am still trying to rectify the problem. Its driving me nutty. Its like a gym workout pumping that pump
  13. Thank you, We have had a go at vaseline. currently trying to put it back together now. Do I put it around the o-ring only or in other places too? I find it a little strange how its only just started leaking when the power is off and we have had it a good few months up and running on my tank. The o-ring looks okay. no cracks or anything. or does it just get loose? would it leak when it was running too if it was in need of a new one?
  14. hello people, I have a aqua one2200 canister filter and every time the electricity gets turned off or I turn it off at the plug to do some cleaning in my tank it leaks. It leaks around the edges of the filter. Does this mean I need a new O-ring? any help would be appreciated. Thanks Leah
  15. how did he get on? just out of interest? poor fella
  16. mmmm a bit of octo-love humping going on here i feel. ha ha
  17. Thanks for all the tips. They are most helpfull. I am really glad i asked. I am usually pretty good at my water changes at the mo and do realize that i would really need to up my game with the discus. I did see a few of the ones for sale and did think that I would have to keep to the same level of care to keep them alive and healthy. It seems that 7cm is a good size for a starter fish in most peoples opinion. i will def try and do that. And 50 litres per fish too. Thanks everyone for your advice. Keep it coming
  18. Thanks i will have a good read later on about them. Poor fishies in that picture &c:ry
  19. So i have had many tanks before and have a few regular freshwater ones dotted around the house for years. I have always quite fancied a Discus tank and in the next few months or so going to see if i can set something up as my main tank and upgrade. so really the question is what would you guys recommend litre wise? presume around 200ish?? I see i few corner ones around. Would one of those be okay or would they prefer a long one? for around 4 or 5? I will start with youngsters. I know i am going to need a good filter system eg external. And i have heard that they dont like fast flowing water? I know that they need lots of love and care and i am prepared to put the work in to make them happy. Thats why I thought I would ask the peeps in the know before i go purchasing a tank and making a big mistake. Any tips guys? Thanks Thanks in advance
  20. Thanks for your kind request for me. I managed to keep them all alive which was great. I think when i go away later in the year i think i may just try and deligate my tanks around my friends houses with strict instructions on feedings. Thanks for all your helps and advice. You guys are always so helpful :bggrn:
  21. really???? why would anyone do this?? poor little fellas. I hope i never come back in my next life as guppies in that persons house. i would of had to have done something really bad to deserve that. Poor little bleighters. :fshi:
  22. yep, I have a friend that can come round to do that but didnt want to burden her with the feedings too. Then she would only have to come round once and maybe do the water change and refill the food dispenser if needed.
  23. yes thank you that is what i was thinking. So i would have to keep the lid open for it to work and dispense the food. I am away for two weeks this time but i am away for 4 weeks later on next year so i was thinking of maybe investing. I also have lots of little baby corys in one of my tanks this time that i am concerned that they wont get enough food and die off if i leave them for 2 weeks unfed. They would be in a planted tank though so that would help them i guess.
  24. hello, I have a adult Bristlenose in a tank that i would like to put my batch of baby corys in to grow out. The babies would easily fit into the mouth of this guy as they are about 5 weeks old.I am wondering if the fella will just see them as a fast meal. They are currently in his tank but in a breeder. There are other platy babies in there that he doesnt seem to bother with but i guess they are not tootering around on the bottom on his turf. Has anyone actually done this? i dont really want to test it out as i would feel just terrible if it was just a masacre. Thanks in advance guys you are always so helpful Leah
