  1. Cheers reef Im not so sure about the light being the sole factor - it definately the ultimate reason but caused because of the fluidised carbon. The lights have been on there for quite some time (4 months+) and things started going very well in the first 3 months. It's only the last month or so where things have gone backwards, coninciding to when the carbon was fluidised (about a month prior to that). Its unlikely that lighting would have caused corals to go really well (coloured up WAY better) then all of a sudden they go backwards obviously the intensity of lighting is the cause - but i think the overuse of carbon is THE sole factor causing the extra clarity thus extra penetration of light and uv burn. do you think its a good idea that i get some glass covers for the lights too? i was weighing up the +/- of it, looks like it would have helped cut down UV.
  2. i'll be doing the largest water change physically possible. i opted for a minimum of 50% - but it all depends on what type of storage i can get. i've got another mate with a trailer i could probably borrow and also got a 200 litre drum i could put on the back of it. would be much easier if i can get hold of cracker and borrow his 1,000 litre container on his trailer. then i really could do a 100% water change oh, and layton those ones i posted pic's of are those that could recover. there are many others that are fully white and there is no way they could recover.
  3. no, not happy at all - otherwise i wouldnt be looking at changing all of it but yeah - all kh, ca, mg, ph etc are fine. something else is obviously wrong though.
  4. nothing. cheers mate. i was trying to get hold of cracker and borrow his trailer and 1,000 litre container. will have to get water on friday morning, got to take wife in for minor surgery tomorrow morning. didnt realise high tide was so early. will call him tomorrow morning and see - unless you gotta trailer? how do you usually collect? i only got 10 x 20litre buckets which will take too long
  5. cheers. bulbs are 3 x 400W, from left to right 14k narva, 20k XM, 14k narva. currently been on for 3 hours a day for the 5 days or so
  6. continued... from this, 10th September... to this today...
  7. that was the plan tomorrow...
  8. every single acro is now dead or dying beyond being able to be saved. the pink poccilipora is perhaps the only thing possible to be saved if i can get it to another tank for holding. absolutely gutted i cant actually put it into words. everything is basically gone, even a large staghorn. all lps are completely withdrawn. even xenia are so small they are about 1/5th of their normal size. from this... 10th Sept... to this... today...

    Amazing!!

yeah mega insane, both of those have been posted here before. certainly shows that the predators of the ocean are not always the obvious ones! this is the most scary http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60v8NuT4daU

    Sand..

probably mix it with freshwater and measure salinity with a refractometer
  11. probably more like a beer can if that's the case then it would explain why my xenia are shrivelled up to hell. too much clarity and too pure water?
  12. looks way better, great job! i think i'll do the same thing now that half my acro's are dead :-? good chance to re-position things... and probably find something metallic breaking down at the bottom of the tank!
  13. should have remembered then, my bad. still mega frustrating seeing coral loss happen so quick - especially when they take so long to grow :-?
  14. none go figure as i said, fay and reef had same problem by using too many kg's. my mistake was putting in a fluidised reactor which has the effect of water having the best contact with the media. hindsight is a wonderful thing.
  15. no prob's, i be around most nights i got thurs and fri off so will be looking at doing a 50% water change one of these 2 days. thanks mate, appreciate it yeah really odd, only thing i can put it down to was fluidising the carbon, nothing else makes sense. fay and reef had a similar problem from what i recall by using too much carbon. most lps are closed up, some are out. add another to the list - just took a 2nd look at my pink monti thats going backwards too, very very light coloured pink and heading towards becoming bleached  overall, probably looking at about a 50% loss of acro's, maybe a tad more. there are really only a couple of acro's that dont look effected at all - no real difference in where they are sitting compared to others. however, all acro's are effected in some way or another, either bleached partially, fully or looking as if they are lacking in polyps (eg: when feeding cyclopeeze) sux
  16. hell yes but only after my tank comes right!
  17. 6 of my acro's are now dead or nearing "death". bleached - including this one which p@#$%! me off the most (it's bigger than this now, but not that that matters at all  )...
  18. got back 2am this morning. checked tank this morning things still alive but still looking bleached/washed out. some acro's are fine, some really look like they're on there way out  going to cut photoperiod down to 6 hours a day til i can do a 50% WC.
  19. no, no one local just cross fingers its ok i guess
  20. starting off, probably most important ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. long term nitrate, calcium, magnesium and alkalinity. also as mentioned above, salinity very important as it can get out of whack when dosing freshwater topup - go for a refractometer to get the best reading
  21. i think they're getting worse. acro's are looking bleached - more so than they were before - however LPS are doing better? Heading to Melbourne tomorrow for a week, typical of my luck I'll get back and everything will be dead... Only thing i can put it down to is the fluidised carbon, nothing else was dosed out of the ordinary. Will be making sure kH, Ca and Mg are sweet before I head out tomorrow, ensure CR is in check, skimmer is empty, topup water is full then just hope it comes right :-? Never managed to get around to a water change this weekend, so will have to do one when i get back (although have done 2 x 20% water changes in the last 2 weeks)
  22. no, decided not to dose anything now til it comes right. did dose 10ml per day for the first 4 days though as directed by zeovitnz
  23. TMNT rock!.. but i can't remember there #$!@#$ names under pressure
  24. I noticed last night my pink poc (which is a really nice pink) is receding on the top in about half a dozen places (similar tissue necrosis to some other acro's but on a much smaller scale). where it's receding (about a couple of mm square) its yellow in colour, perhaps a mixture of the pink and brown algae taking over? will be mega gutted if i lose this coral... will post pic's later to show what it looks like
