  1. cheers, been watching it looks ok. read other forums they indicate cant overdose kalk, only pH spikes are a concern :-? see what happens in the morning.
  2. i kinda got lost in the summary section where they said... and then continued on with... but other than that, it was highly informative
  3. so where are you at then warren? the longer i spend searching the net for advice and learning stuff etc, the less sleep i get. im down to 4 hours sleep now, less a good 30 minutes when the boy wakes up crying, less another 10 minutes of the cat meowing, less 5 minutes of the wife talking in her sleep.... hell, i might as well just go to work now!
  4. you would be surprised how much a small tank can evaporate, proportionally the same if not more than a larger tank. my 3 footer evaporates (proportionally) much quicker than my large tank. so much so i've given up on it as a hospital tank and am going to turn it into a ready-to-use sump if i need to separate my refugium off the main system. anyways, the point is the very first time you topup it wont be much of a problem. the next time will get worse, the next time worse again. over time you're topping up water but adding more and more unwanted nutrients each time. a water change will strip a certain amount out but if you're topping up that night/next morning with tap water, you're back to square one again - if not worse than when you started!
  5. a 70W would be sufficient i'd think for a tank that size. probably $80 off trademe at a guess, maybe less, maybe more, depending on quality and condition. i got 150W'ers for about $120 each 2nd hand. thats ballast and bulb.
  6. nope, its crap. most likely your cause of the hair algae (although im picking the lights are helping feed it too) i have RODI with TDS meter, reads 75ppm in, 0ppm out. get a RODI system or at the least, just DI. petplanet had one going for a really good price on trademe, $300. in a tank that size it would last you 10 years
  7. oh dear! always wanted to know how my natural biological processes worked
  8. go for a small halide instead and get yourself some sps

ok, admitedly it was more closer to 3 tblspoons was the shock of it when i realised it was kalk, then the bigger shock to actually watch pH number increase on the pinpoint!

cheers pies, im not too panic'd coz i'd imagine the inverts would have shat themselves by now if the pH swing really did effect them. im sure they and the fish will cope. at least the results thus far show happy CBB (which id think would be the most temperamental of the fish) and living, hungry shrimpee's. might have done the world of good in all honesty just the unknown, never seen a tank swing that much in such a short period of time. it was a LARGE scoop of kalk. the fact that the pH has dropped back a bit is pleasing though! and best of all i get to finish work at 10:30am tomorrow morning coz i finished at 10pm tonight! joy. perfect excuse to do a water change 8)

try sitting in bed, knowing you should be sleeping, getting up every 10 minutes to check the tank, and googling the great goricle like theres no tomorrow!
  12. thats a cool size for a nano. water changes (to reduce nutrients) and good definately lighting are my picks. i get hair algae under my 10k but none under each of my 14k's. what are you using for topup? not that i'd imagine you'd evaporate much but even a small amount of tap water will make a significant addition of crap

try 7.80 to 8.25 in 5 minutes. that sort of swing is typical over 12 hours, not 5 minutes.

no water onsite, go figure. ph now stable at 8.22, has dropped back about 0.6. inverts would be most prone to sudden changes, although shrimps look ok. im hoping like hell ph was just under 8.0 prior to adding kalk, rather than 7.80 as it was last night.

jeez mate you're the man of many posts, only turned the notebook on coz you rang me at f@#$%$ midnight!!! (i assume it was you) went down and checked the CBB again as i'd imagine he'd be most prone to the sudden increase. swimming around happy as. if you say water change within the next 24 hours, why 24 hours? i'd imagine it would have to be done immediately cant see how fish could cope for that long? ps: dont ring, babies sleeping!!!

    i screwed up

I screwed up big time adding what I thought was a large heaped tablespoon of baking soda to a couple of litres of RODI water and added to the tank... then realised it was kalkwasser... :-? (i had tested pH about the same time last night and it was 7.85) By the time I'd realised i ran upstairs and turned on the pH monitor, watched it go from 8.0 to 8.25 within about 5 minutes. First thing I noticed abnormal was the CBB started twitching a bit. Water is a bit more cloudy. All other fish are "in bed" so cant see them. Shrimps are out and looking ok. Question: What is the implications of a sudden and massive pH swing like this? I know its not good, and am now concerned for the fish. I dont know what pH immediately prior to dosing but based on night before was 7.8. As i finish typing this pH is now at 8.27 Help?!
  20. dont glue the entire fitting. screw the 90 degree elbow into the bulkhead fitting and assemble the actual durso U and top piece with glue, but just push fit the assembled durso into the 90 degree elbow. always nice if you need to remove it for maintenance or pull out your pliers
  21. picaxe nzl distributor is here: http://www.sicom.co.nz probably cheaper to buy locally off these guys than import. might buy some kits and have a play
  22. gonna hook up a 32mm ball valve i got sitting around to the fuge on the weekend so i can shut it off from the main tank. be interesting to see how the skimmer functions with the extra flow, will post results. personally i dont think it will make a heap of difference. will also plumb up another ball valve onto the fuge overflow so I can direct the water into a separate sump and have it possible to pump water back into the fuge again. planning for the tank upgrade end of year chiplumber

  24. just a model number for the controller that runs tunze streams, 7095 is the latest. able to vary and pulse flow from streams simulating tides , etc
  25. they txt your cellphone and tell you that your sump is empty, your heaters have failed and your fish are all dead when you are away on 2 weeks holiday
