  1. That's a very fancy bedside lamp!
  2. http://www.seneye.com/store/devices/seneye-reef.html US$189 And you don't only have to use it on holidays PS: reviews are mixed about accuracy. Here's a positive review http://www.reefs.com/blog/2012/07/30/pr ... iewseneye/
  3. These days one should be able to monitor one's tanks remotely to check on their health. Holidays should not be a time when one's pets are exposed to major health issues.
  4. I suspect they want to see the reconstructed tank ... but plastic bins might be a secondary request!
  5. Fish can party with the lights off
  6. I take it you didn't register online for the 3 year warranty? Heaters are the things that fail the most in my experience so I keep a few spare. If you're going to be home everyday, I'd use just the one heater. I check the temperatures each day to make sure the heaters are working. If you're going to be leaving the tank in someone else's care, I'd use two.
  7. My UV sterilizer was built into my cannister filter .. I just turned it on for as long as it took to clear the algae, and then turned it off again. The bulbs have a finite life, and shouldn't really be necessary in a planted tank. But it should help if it's a free floating bacteria/virus/parasite. If it's a parasite attached to the fish, it won't help there.
  8. I used a UV sterilizer to clear green algae from my 180L tank. It only took a day.
  9. UV sterilizer will kill free floating algae, bacteria and parasites. It won't touch anything that does not pass thru the UV light. I'd imagine a partial colectomy for a cat's megacolon would be somewhat more expensive than treating a few freshwater fish!
  10. One possibility then is that you introduced some disease with the new fish, and the frequent water changes you were doing were containing it. I know it's not practical for many but it's recommended to isolate new fish in their own quarantine tank for a month before adding to the main tank ...
  11. Without knowing what the problem is I'd be inclined to start doing rather frequent PWCs. Have you introduced anything new into the tank recently?? ( assuming it's not coincidence, then presume either it's a toxin or bacterial/viral disease )
  12. Get an Amazon account, and store on S3. Costs about 15c per GB of storage after the first year http://aws.amazon.com/s3/pricing/
  13. I came across one review where the guy took a tank with tap water that had been dechlorinated, added some ammonia and then the TLC start smart product. The ammonia disappeared and nitrates formed. It would be good if someone could reproduce the experiment.
  14. This sounds very encouraging .. a product that works as advertised. Do they say what's in the bottle? And what's the cost?
  15. http://www.plosone.org/article/info:doi ... ne.0023281 Explains why you're better off getting your bugs from your pond instead of a bottle.
  16. Spring where I am! But take your point, it probably died from hypothermia in which case it probably didn't suffer much.
  17. But you're already brought the minnows in from outside!
  18. Profit ... but some of the manufacturers do believe they are providing a useful product. If you have a pond outside, you'd be better off grabbing some gravel from there, and putting it into a nylon stocking and placing into the new tank.
  19. The bacteria in a bottle are not the same as those archaea that ultimately colonize your filters and decorations.
  20. It should take longer than a week to build up levels of microbes to oxidise the ammonia unless you happened to have collected large numbers on the roots of the plants you've added. The plants themselves will also help.
  21. earth worms? bread crumbs? jam on toast?
  22. I had a tank covered with a black plastic bag for a few months. Just had some driftwood with some java fern on it and BGA. Some of it still survived. Put some Excel in last week, and no change. Going to use an oxyacetylene torch next.
  23. What size is this tank that developed the leaky gut?
  24. Did you get a quote from him for a new tank?
