kuhli loach

ummm? somerthing to do with fry.... feed them to something? Cats? sell them on trademe to Oscar and other large fish, keepers as a food fish? ...or even have them as guppy fritters instead of whitebait?! :lol:

do any of these fish like hiding? because i am currently making a large cavelike structure out of driftwood, riverstones and silicone sealant, with lots of holes and hiding places!

no, there won't be much movement in front of the tank at all, just the noise from outside. I'm guessing platys and Kuhlis wouldn't jump either.

ok then platys cardinals and kuhlis! :roll: would have liked to keep tigers (have read thet they need to be kept in shoals of 5 or 6 minimum, and thought they grew much smaller, have never seen them fully grown)(would they still achieve this size in a small aquarium or simply grow to suit its size?) Oh! another thing are any of these fish very nervous and/or inclined to jump because although I will try to keep teenage tantrums to a minimum, I have a 3 year old brother who loves to run through the house screaming at the top of his lungs, slamming doors and playing with his very loud barking dog. My room door will be shut (not slammed!) but the noise through the wall still might be very stressful to hatchetfish and other nervous species.

yes zodiacs! I was looking at those in the petshop today, they look rather like Kuhlis, only not as wriggly, but with Kuhli loaches their might not be enough room for the zodiacs. I think tigers should be ok, because they would be on the top and middle levels of the tank and the kuhlis would stay on the bottom, but I don't know, they might cause trouble but are very pretty.

maby some tiger barbs and some kuhlis (just 2 species should be fine)

tigerbarbs and kuhlis? thinking of getting 8 tiger barbs and 5 Kuhlis striped colours together would look sooo cool! Not sure if tigers would be happy in that size tank though?

will go without platys but tiger barbs and kuhlis would look really nice. The tigers would have quite a bit of swimroom, being the only fish in the top and middle tank levels.

plants growing out the top of the tank would look cool! unless platys, tetra or kuhlis like escaping tanks, or jump when nervous it should be fine without a lid. will reasearch tiger barbs.

Trying to choose plants now! Since my aquarium is only 30cms deep, some plants are going to be way too big. Can they be trimed or shortened to size or would it be better to buy smaller plants? we have Acorus rush variegata, for sale currently in our petshop would this be too big? http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pets-animals/Fish/Aquatic-plants/auction-327069255.htm Another thing would tiger barbs grow too big for my aquarium or could a shoal of eight substitute for the tetra (neither kuhlis or platys have long fins so fin nipping shouldnt be a problem)

that sounds more realistic! I brought a big piece of bogwood today! It looks so neat and i think the Kuhlis will like it since it has lots of tunnels in it that they would like hiding in! Still wanting platys (sooo pretty and so many color variations!) don't like cichlids much, too agro when breeding.

so you think just about 5-7 Kuhli loaches and 3-4 small fish, or a shoal of smaller fish for the top tank levels? for the small fish would platys be alright (I love all their bright colours!) or prehaps a small shoal of tetra or guppies or zebra danio or golden pencilfish or threadfin rainbowfish or hatchetfish or chocolate gourami? burrowssj wrote: p.s I would really like to see a loach eat from a hand you should try get yours confident enough to do so! so would I!

maby no hatchetfish then? Or should i rethink most of those fish, and get far smaller numbers? My filter is (I'm afraid not very good) an Aqua One internal mechanical filter, the 101F maxi. i was advised that this was the best thing for my tank when I brought it from the petshop but have been told since then that it isnt.

I love your frogs! I'm more of a fish person myself but my mum loves frogs! We currently have 3 tanks stocked with frogs but just seeing those pictures would be enough to make her want to go out and buy some more! :lol:

thanks I think I will have to cut down on cory numbers because I want a few more Kuhlis because the more of them there are the happier and more confident they are. If I got 5 kuhlis insted of 3 how many corys should i keep? or should I keep 3 Kulis and 5 corys or mabey 7 Kuhlis and no corys? Not sure if thats too much for my aquarium also are golden kuhli loaches just the same as regular banded Kuhlis or do they grow bigger or have different requirements?

thats ok, I think in a community aquarium the fry would'nt last long!

Kuhlis like getting kept in large groups would a shoal of 7 be ok in my 60x30x30 aquarium (if it means I have to cut down on other fish numbers I dont mind!) Here was the numbers I was going to get 10 tetra 5 hatchet fish 3 kuhli (hoping to get bigger numbers if possible in my tank) 4 corys 2 or 3 platys

Yes local petshop is open and get Kuhuli occasionally but not often, Thanks for the offer but can easily take a trip to Palmy and purchase some there, (my family wont mind me fish shopping if its a family trip! :lol: )

saw golden Kuhli loaches for sale at Pets Unlimited Regular banded Kuhli loach was also for sale. Just wanting to know if Gold Kuhlis will be too big for my tank, have different requirements than regular Kuhlis or are they just a colour variation?

slightly confused :-? is a golden Kuhli loach just the same as a regular banded Kuhli but just a different colour variation?

Deciding against dwarf gouramis since I want somthing hardier that wont die in new aquarium conditions.

mabey just 3 Kuhlis 5 corys 10 tetra 5 hatchetfish 2-3 platys no apistos if a living in a community tank that size would make them unhappy
