  1. Actually let me rephrase that. I had a 60X30X30, but unfortunately my mother has taken that off my hands as a new frog enclosure  I am now on the lookout for a new tank and this time am taking advice to buy the biggest tank my budget can handle! I'm currently looking at a custom built 120X50X50 with a stand and an external cannister filter on trade me. By currently I mean I haven't checked out with my dad yet, whether I could have something that size in my room but we live in hope... Would a couple of kissing gourami be good for a 300L tank?
  2. What are KH and GH? I'd only ever heard of PH. Is it something I should get a water test for?
  3. Hi I have a 60X30X30 tank which I am hoping to stock with - A pair of Dwarf Gourami 4 marbled hatchetfish (or golden pencilfish if anyone knows which would work out better) 7 cardinal tetras 5 kuhli loaches and praps an optional bristlenose cat I'm wondering if these guys would be compatible in the tank size and also with one another. Also plants, I am interested in purchasing a CO2 diffuser but I don't know anywhere that stocks them (stuck in a town that has very basic petshop fish knowledge and no transport hope, as of yet ,to anywhere better!) If someone could reccommend an online retailer that would be of great help.
  4. pressurised sounds expensive but it looks a like a lot more successful and easy way of feeding plants, so I think I'll go with that.
  5. Thanks Sophia! It's nice to hear from everyone again are hatchet fish the right size for my tank? I just found out platys like harder water and all the other fish I am going for like soft acidic conditions. I have a very good wooden lid that no fish could ever dislodge, so that isn't a problem, it also goes quite a bit higher than the top of the tank so the hatchets won't injure themselves even if they jump. Any ideas on which of the fish to put in first to cycle the tank after the nitrite and nitrate levels have dropped? Am rallying my supplies and have decided to invest in an CO2 diffuser for plants, any help on how to set one of those up would be greatly appreciated.
  6. Oh, this tank is going to be planted quite heavily, will this bunch of fish ravage through my aquasacping?
  7. Thanks. I thought so... I think the other fish should eat any platy fry. hopefully. Or else I could alway give some back to the petstore. Are hatchetfish suited to my size of tank? Perhaps I could replace the platys with them.
  8. After about a year of not having time for the lengthy setup and choosing process (NCEA) it's summer holidays and I finally have time to kickstart my 60x30x30 aquarium into a small community tank. The sort of thing I'm aiming for is - - a pair of gourami - shoal of about 7 cardinal tetra - 4 platy - 5 kuhli loaches - 1 bristlenose catfish is this too many fish? and my (not to be trusted unknowledgeable) petstore told me that a pair of kissing gourami would be fine in a tank my size. I am unsure and and more inclined to think that a pair of dwarf gouramis would be better suited. Expert opinion please?
  9. Should I buy a humidity mister for their tank?
  10. As a student I have tonnes of homework, I was going to get round to the Kuhli's but I thought frogs in a planted exhibit would be easier to maintain than fish in water since I have very little time. My mum already has some golden bell frogs and feeds them whatever insects are flying or crawling about the house, their cages are a lot easier to maintain than that of the goldfish I once kept. I have also wanted whistlers for quite some time but only had one tank in which I was going to keep Kuhlis.
  11. Am interested in the whistling frogs, where could i purchase them? (I live in the Wairarapa district) Oh and what sort of exhibit would they prefer?
  12. I am wanting to get some frogs for my 60x30x30 but I am not sure which frogs you can have in NZ. Could someone please give me a list thanks.
  13. I am wanting to get some frogs for my 60x30x30 but am not sure which ones you can get in NZ could you please give me a list thanks.
  14. oh really ! Am only getting 1 type of loach though since tank is small so just kuhlis
  15. am interested in zodiac loaches, could somebody please tell me a little more about them thanks
  16. don't exactly know but will test it when tank cycling
  17. CO2 - you mean like a good bubbler
  18. surely aquarium plants should absorb most of it
  19. oh! our water is high in nitrates how do I lower them (or will they lower themselves in the cycling process)
  20. wow that proves you don't need one to have beautiful plants! should i get some undergravel fertilizer instead of root balls?
  21. by the way our water is bore water with no chlorine :happy2: and has a high nitrate content which I think is also good
  22. yes they would be nice but I do like the siamese fighting fish
  23. changing mind about what fish I want - 5 kuhlis - 10 cardinals - 1 crown tail siamese fighting fish male (or should i have a pair?) are these a good mix or should I reconsider?
