  1. I personally hate the Raid automatic thingees. My husband wanted to get one. I don't even like using fly spray. Fly spray is supposedly harmless for us... Care to expand on that? What other things in the pool should I be worried about? Isn't the chlorine supposed to kill things like E Coli? The reason I want to use it is to stop the pool getting algae in it. It's going to be covered with a tarpaulin when not in use to keep dirt/leaves/insects out. Anyway, we used it last year without getting sick.
  2. LOL rather what did we used to use it for   lol
  3. Yep that is true ... I do love honey. And we need them to pollinate flowers. I am just scared of them because they can sting. Anything that bites/stings I am scared of... though I did get bitten by a praying mantis once lol
  4. Oh and I found out today (when I opened up my tank (took cardboard lid off) that it doesn't have a closed lid. It's just a clear piece of plastic with lots of holes on it so I don't know if the Raid thing will affect the fish or not....
  5. Yup 1400L works out at $5.60. We are in Papakura under United Water.
  6. Thanks Zayne. Thought I better make sure because I remember my parents telling us when we were kids not to drink the pool water because of the Chlorine. I don't plan on putting lots of it in there... just a little....though it's only $5.60 to fill the pool with water so it's not a big deal to change the water if it needs to be changed. Just a pain in the backside....
  7. I have a pheasant feather somewhere here that my ex bf gave me LOL
  8.   you are all so funny! If I was laughing any harder I'd be wetting myself! lol
  9. You did the right thing. Got a tape recorder? lol Put it in your pocket, push record and go and talk to the 2IC again.
  10. How's it going? My ex bfs parents live in Manukau Heights and his mother worked for the SPCA bird rescue and has had lots of ducklings and ducks. If you need any help let me know... I can contact them.
  11. Do you really think one week would make a difference? We always got our kittens when they were 8 weeks old and they already knew how to use a litter box. I remember when I moved out of home and wanted to get a Birman kitten I was told they can't leave mum until 12 weeks and so I ended up getting a dark torty from our local pet shop because I was lonely and too impatient to wait another 4 weeks LOL Probably a good thing I didn't get a Birman because I wouldn't want to let it go outside ever because we don't live in a good area. Someone would most likely steal it.
  12. How did it go? I don't have any advice... we have never had this happen with any of our female cats. Though our male cat used to pee inside the house a lot before he was desexed.
  13. I love Kookaburras too. I love Australian wildlife. You seen the movie "Napoleon"? You get a good look at lots of Australian wildlife. I've been to Aussie 3x... Brisbane, Gold Coast, Melbourne and Ballarat. Some of my fav Aussie animals are Galahs, Sulphur Crested Cockatoos and Eastern Rosellas which I see here at home! There used to be these chocolate toys like the Kinder Surprise that I used to collect because the toys were all Australian wildlife.
  14. LOL My ex's mother worked for the SPCA bird rescue and she had Herons and his father also had a fish tank! But I see you live in Tauranga...
  15. http://www.foodlovers.co.nz/forum/read. ... 09,quote=1 Hope this helps.
  16. I love identifying insects when I don't know what they are. I have seen blue ladybugs here at our place. Not very often but we do get them. I have a swan plant... well actually I have 4 now LOL so whenever there are aphids on them the ladybugs are there. I have had 7 Monarchs hatch so far this season and am impatiently waiting for my stinging nettles to get big enough to see the Red or Yellow Admirals. I have seen a couple so far... one early this year and one recently. I love ladybugs, praying manti and butterflies and that's probably it for the insect department LOL I HATE spiders, wasps, bees, ants, flies, earwigs, longhorn beetles, ... the list goes on and on lol
  17. You mean Rose Water that you use to make Turkish delight?? I am pretty sure I've seen it at our local New World. Hope you find it!
  18. Okay so as you can see I know nothing lol Can you use boiled tap water, cooled down of course to room temp, to fill a fish tank? Is that good? To get rid of bad chemicals like nitrate etc?
  19. Just wanted to ask if the bird in your avatar is yours? I love Goldfinches. We get a lot of them in our China Doll tree. They love the seeds in the long seedpods. They strip them empty. Don't like it when our cats catch them... but now they are both wearing collars with bells and rarely catch anything. One time one of them caught a Rosella I was extremely upset. They also catch eels lol and ducklings.
  20. Such a cool idea!! I've been thinking about doing something like this. If we ever get sick of our pool I could always turn it into a pond
  21. I think I just got bitten by the green monster (jealous) lol
  22. Hello again! My husband has one of those Raid things on the wall in the dining room that lets off a little spray every so often. Well I remember when I had a fish in my bedroom at home and my dad sprayed fly spray in my bedroom and it killed it. I am going to be putting the tank in our bedroom and the Raid thing doesn't seem to kill anything unless it's really close to it. Is it going to be safe to have it going with the fish in our bedroom? The tank does have a lid. Second question... totally off topic but hopefully someone knows the answer... I want to put something in our blow up swimming pool ... it's 1400L and I want to put some chlorine in or chlorine tablets to keep it clean... but we have a 4yo daughter who will drink the water. She did it last year. We found out on the 1st Dec that she is Autistic... so she won't understand why she can't drink the water. If I put Chlorine tablets or Chlorine in there and she drinks the water is it going to hurt her?
  23. Hi I'm back! I saw the small tanks at Animates when we went in to get supplies. I think in this day and age when it's so cheap to get a bigger tank made and the small ones are costing the same amount as a 50L does, there is no need for them. I paid $50 for my 15L ... before finding out it is too small. Then found out you can get a 50L made for only $40. I was quite pissed off. Excuse my language lol My mum used to have 2 goldfish in a bowl when we were kids and they lived for a long time. She was always good about cleaning the bowl every week. But as you say, she would put the fish into an icecream container or food bowl in some of the water from the fish bowl, and empty out the rest into the sink, clean the bowl and then fill with clean water and then add fish and the water from the fish bowl originally. When we moved to Papakura the house we bought had a fish pond so the goldfish moved into the pond. They lived for years. Though the small tanks could be used for when a fish is sick as a quarantine tank right? Or while the fish is small or when you get a new fish and want to make sure it's not sick before adding it in with the other fish. Or if you are having issues with fish fighting to seperate them.
  24. How much power does running a heater in a tank use per month? And how much power for a light?
