  1. When they say you need 60 gallons for one male red eared turtle are they talking about the amount of water or the whole enclosure? I'm thinking one day soon I might get one. I've seen numerous tanks on Trade Me for turtles but they aren't big so are only suitable for while the turtles are little..... Anyone here got any red eared turtles?
  2. Yeah I agree. But I guess there's a reason for it... they must be a danger to something here....
  3. I used 4 3/4 tablespoons of salt in the tank (of course dissolved in tank water first) in the tank recently and the snails seem fine. It's a 95L tank.
  4. Thanks Caryl. Ok I guess I'll put the two apple snails into the little 15L tank which has nothing in it.... it's only for a short time.
  5. So our cat Cleo got a bad cut on one of her hind legs.... so she had to get it stitched up at the vets.... $360 later.... she had to stay inside for 7 days. Yesterday she got to go outside for the first time. Well I was on the computer in the evening and she was outside and she started meowing pitifully the way she does when she's caught something... so I went out to see what she had.... what she had was not what I expected lol What was it you ask? A flippin praying mantis!! :sml1: I wonder what she'd bring if I had to keep her inside for a month..... maybe a fly? :sml1: I think being inside for a week has driven her mad lol
  6. Grrr our cat caught an adult Rosella once but it was dead when she brought it to us. I was so upset. I love Rosellas. Sorry to hear that it didn't survive. I was going to say SPCA bird rescue but I'm sure you knew what you were doing.
  7. Yeah my ex bfs mother worked for the bird rescue with the SPCA. They will take any bird.
  8. I would agree with the other posters. Do the ACC form. Good luck! I think that is terrible ( I've had a root canal done too. And since then, the filling has broken, because the dentist didn't put a cap on the tooth. I only have about 1/3 of the tooth and a big hole. I've done with paying for something that doesn't last. Waste of money. I have asked him twice to remove the tooth and he won't so I am not spending any more money on it.
  9. Chameleon. They are so cool! I love the way they move and their eyes and how they can change color .... I think they are the most extraordinary thing ever!!! Not to mention I LOVE the song Karma Chameleon LOL
  10. I read online that apple snails don't tolerate Malachite Green or Methylene Blue... can't remember which one. I want to put Wunder Tonic in my tank. I just got a couple of apple snails recently. Has anyone here used Wunder Tonic with apple snails before? I didn't think they'd tolerate the tonic salt but they are fine.... I mean I thought about what happens if you put salt on a garden snail.... and was very apprehensive about using tonic salt in the tank but online it said you could. Thanks for your help.
  11. Thanks for that alanmin. Is the reason anchor worms are more common in pond goldfish because they are picked up from live food? Because my goldfish were in a bathtub pond outside until about 3-4 weeks ago and there were live bloodworms in there... noticed them when I was cleaning it out to move it once.... I never feed live food to my fish .... they get frozen bloodworms and dinners but never live food.
  12. Yeah I was thinking of maybe just using the heater in the 64L tank as I don't need two. I think this one (the Jebo one) came with the tank (when it was purchased) ... not sure.... anyway, since I have goldfish in there I don't need it working at the moment. When I'm confident my fish in the 64L are not sick I will move them to the 95L and just put the heater from the 64L into the 95L tank. The thing is I kind of don't want to move the goldfish into the smaller tank because they need 60L each and they're in a 95L .... putting them into a 64L ..... well I don't really feel right about it KWIM The 95L is still on the small side.... hopefully one day soon I'll be able to get a 120L.... I actually had the goldfish in a bathtub outside but when my sisters bf gave me the 95L I moved them because the water in the tub was going green in like 2-3 days of doing a large water change. I was going to get a UV filter but then he offered me the tank. So either I'll have to get a bigger tank or put them back into the tub and get a UV filter.... when they are getting bigger! I'll probably end up getting a bigger tank because my tropicals need a bigger tank too.
  13. Thanks alanmin. I'm starting to think it might be anchor worm as the threads look like little white cuts/wounds ... I can't see them moving and I can't see any anchor worms.... so I'm thinking maybe they are wounds from when the worms burrow into the fish? Anyway, apparently potassium permanganate treats anchor worm so since I've already used tonic salt and it doesn't seem to have done anything, I'm going to try Wunder Tonic and if I still see no success I'm going to try potassium permanganate. Can you get this from the LFS? I shop at Animates. Also, will PP do anything to my good bacteria in the filter?
  14. Well at the moment it's got two fantail goldfish in it because the heater dial numbers are unreadable.... I need to put the thermometer in my tropical tank into the 95L and turn the heater on on the lowest setting and go up from there until it's the right temp. All I know is that the heater seems to be working because the light does come on when I plug it in  I have a 64L with tropicals in it which I was planning to move into the 95L... I have platys, mollies, tiger barbs, dwarf gourami, neon tetras and white cloud minnows. I'm pretty sure I have too many fish in the 64L lol so want to move them into the bigger tank. Unfortunately I lost a couple of neon tetras recently and am concerned it was NT disease that killed them so don't really want to move them at the moment until I sort out what's going on. I'm just waiting to see if any more of my fish die.... The 95L has a built in filter and it came with an air pump and obviously the heater and it has a built in light hood  It's already set up for the goldfish... they've been in there a few weeks now. I have some pics ... will post when I get a chance.
  15. Mmmm I don't think I'd get a good enough photo that would show them as they are sooo tiny.... but I will try.
  16. Oh it's 95L .... forgot to mention that )
  17. My sisters new boyfriend gave me a tank he wasn't using anymore for free WOO :happy1: It's a Jebo R362 with a cabinet and all I had to do was get new suction cups for the heater, an airstone for the pump and two new bulbs and a starter switch for the lights. It came with filter media, ornaments, gravel etc.... At the moment it has goldfish in it as I can't see any numbers on the heater dial so would have no idea what temp I have it on..... so I'm not using the heater.
  18. Oh I saw that too! Soooo beautiful! Only thing is, whoever buys/rents the place next would have to know what they're doing re: a marine tank. That would be sooo cool though.... expensive to maintain probably.....
  19. It's not itch. I've dealt with itch before. This is tiny white threads all over it's body, tail and fins.... WAY too many to be anchor worms I think, and they are a lot tinier than what I've seen online on google images of anchor worms..... I'm talking not even a millimetre thick and only about 2 1/2mm long if that.... all I have here is Tonic salt and Wunder Tonic. I put salt in the tank. Apparently Wunder Tonic doesn't treat external parasites. Advice would be greatly appreciated thank you )
  20. Sorry Adrienne lol Yes it's the fact that the light is taking up the space and the strips won't fit on the sides anymore. But livingart has made me  myself .... duh lol I never even thought of just getting hubby to get the strips cut shorter .... this is what happens when I'm tired lol can't think straight. Problem solved hopefully....
  21. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myxobolus_cerebralis
  22. Shouldn't be a problem but I still want the plastic strips for the sides of the tank to sit the acrylic on, if you know what I mean. I don't think they could make those. But I will see....
  23. There is a disease called Whirling disease that I've read about where the fish swim in circles.... hopefully that's not the problem.
