  1. thats helpful, i think i will go with a pump driven one. by the looks of it, if i was to upgrade to a biggerish tank this type would be the best one to get, and is more efficient
  2. so has anyone ever used an air powered skimmer?
  3. I am quite interested to know peoples opinions on air powered skimmers? They seem rather cheap. I can pick one up for about $40 - $50.
  4. O wow, thankyou for that. that is super duper helpful. i will go and buy some more dry rock, and hopefully i will have the skimmer not this week but the week after.
  5. think you might have missed a heater???? lol
  6. thats very intresting, thankyou very much. i always thought i need a filter, or a sump. I am assuming the rock is the natural filter along with the skimmer? why do you say "maybe" for the test kits? i would have thought they are essential. in the future if i do decide to put the sand in, what do i need to do to put it in there? the canister filter will be helpful in our tropical tank, i picked it up for only $45 which i thought was a bargain anyway and its better than the current one.
  7. thanks Jen! i might go and take a look at it tomorrow!
  8. Can someone who actually has experience in keeping their OWN marine tank help? no offence to those who have tried to help. i have read lots of books too but they tell me one thing but experienced keepers tell me another. I am not going to buy another tank at this stage. i am sticking to the 65L + sump i have. i knew that even a small tank isnt cheap. and i am going to buy the right equipment at the beginning!
  9. i will go for the sump. to be honest with you, i have no idea how the sump should be built. i have looked at some complex ones on other discusions, and on the internet but im guessing they depend on the how big the main tank is?? In regards to a larger 200L tank. the only reason i bought a small tank is because i dont have a huge amount of room. although a 200L+ would be awsome!
  10. i have been looking for some, not having much luck though. so i could possibly run the canister filter if i was on a budget, with some mods? i have a small tank but i know no one who can help me design and convert it too a sump, maybe someone here could help me? i am getting a small skimmer.....
  11. what filter would you recommend as a replacement of the canister filter?
  12. http://www.southernencounter.co.nz/aquarium_news.htm thought some people might want to read that. it is a really big shame! i was planning on taking my 2 month old son and partner there.
  13. the sand idea is still on the shelf, im still thinking weather or not to put it in. for the flow i am going to get a wave maker off trademe. i do almost all my shopping at redwood aquatics. i rather love going in there and taking a look. my plan was to have a pair of clowns, a shrimp, and 1 or 2 hardy corals. Im going to get the Reef Octopus NS-80 NANO Skimmer. what kinda filter would you recommend? i have another small tank i can use as a sump.
  14. I went shopping last night and finally got a tank i can set up, well almost setup. I went and bought a 65L glass tank, and the shop was selling some used canister filters so i grabbed one of those too. Lighting, i havnt got that far yet. ive talked to a couple of people about different kind of lights. i would love to get some LEDs but in most cases that is the more expensive. im working on a skimmer. the pet shop is trying to get me one of those... anyway i have added some pictures of the stuff i bought. i would love some feedback, and opinions. Now i have some pictures if anyone is intrested, but i cant figure out how to add pictures. can anyone help? lol
  15. that is a real shame spoon! when you told me about your tank i thought it was amazing. those are great tips for tank stands i still need to built a stand so i will take on those pointers, especially the lip. and a large foot print. i had to return the New Heliea tank i bought, which the pet shop i went to requested i do. so i went on a shopping spree and got another style of tank.
  16. thankyou! i just found the forum from sep. very helpful.
  17. in light of the recent events i am wondering how i can quake proof my tank before i fill it with water and stock it etc. how can i stop it from tipping over?
  18. have you found a home for the fish yet? i have some tanks can set them up in no time at all...
  19. I Live in amberley just north of chch no damage here. but i was watching tv and just wished i could help, being a volunteer for St John i made enquires and went to volunteer at one of the shelters. but i know its abit hard when you dont belong to an organisation helping out. i have seen lots of people helping out others removing all the sand from their yards and there is alot of it, i know from helping for 2 weeks after the sep quake that many many people are lost for words when you have done, and most burst into tears.
  20. Did you find a home for your fish? i have a brand new marine tank that is still in a box waiting to be set up if you would like me to foster them???
  21. Hey all this forum is mainly for those in that live here in Canterbury and Christchurch. I dearly hope everyone is ok, im sure that some of your houses and or business's have been damaged but if anyone needs any help with anything just pm me. i have 2 rooms available for anyone who would like to get out of the city. i live in Amberley with my partner and 8 week old son and we cant feel many of the aftershocks(only the really big ones). we dont have any damage out here, power, water, phone, and internet is all working fine. also if anyone needs a temp home for their fish we have 3 spare tanks, unbroken ready for any fish. one of them is brand new and is suited for marine fish, its 60L. the others are another 60L basic glass one, and a 25L glass one. we can foster fish if needed. any questions just ask. im sure there are others out there waiting to help out aswell. cheers all Craig, Jess and Bentley
  22. I just bought one of these great wee tanks! but did yours come with a cooling fan and under gravel filter standard?
  23. O good that means ill have plenty of water for my new nano! thank god they let us take 1000 cubic meters i don't think i could fill my 60L tank with any less than that! anyway this is my first post!( in the non advertising section) this forum is rather helpful, im glad i found it.
