  1. Looking at setting up a decent amount of current in my tank 550L, i have seen on TM a few that do 3000 too 5000 L/H, any recommendations would greatly be appreciated? Also would a wave maker do the same thing, i know it oscillates but is it possible to have it mid way to NOT produce waves on the surface?

    New tank pics

Looking really good dude, so glad they went to a good home 8) what kind of cockatoo cichlid is that at the bottom?
  3. Ah yeah i put a large bowl in then secured the garden hose to fill it up was trying to avoid the stir up but i had the water flow to fast it seems then, bonus is learning this for when i install the other 500L i will know what not to do Also does anyone have problems with flies and having fish tanks? o_0 i have some how seem to be holding half of aucklands flies population here... tanks are cleaned twice a week room is spotless from dirt or grim, note i don't yet have covers over them... I have tried hanging sticky fly catching tape but that just doesn't work with 3 around not 1 fly caught T T. Tried the other week at bunnings too look for something was safe to leave around to kill flies but no luck.
  4. Thanks guys, used the kitchen sieve method took awhile to do it but it sure as beat the countless hours i spent trying to wash it through a bucket and tipping the water out :-? ... though i am going to build a stand with a make shift sieve on top, going to head to bunning's and try to see if i can find something similar to the kitchen sieve, or unless someone knows of something better? Tank is really murky still this morning but i gather this will take sometime to settle and YAY no brown water Does one have to boil the driftwood collected? its a 2m piece... going to cut it down to size to fit in, but even then its going to be two 750mm pieces (top bracing stops me from having to put a one cut piece of 1.5m )
  5. Any tips on doing this, or is it even necessary to clean it? (from a clean river). I know its impossible to get rid of all the dirt but spent a good 30mins washing some in a fish bin and just doesn't seem to clear even the slightest. :-? Would any harm come to the fish with it being in there? (myself i don't think so but want to be 110% sure) Have lake Malawi cichlids. Happy NY everyone
  6. We'll that makes sense because if i think about it my algae came about the same time i purchased some java ferns from my LFS started having small black patches on the leaves, but never thought about it till you mentioned it.... guess i will triple check the next time/possibly set up a quarantine tank just for plants with some hungry SAE to make sure they get it all  . Because as much as i don't mind it on the rock's it does give a nice natural look, it really is a pain scrubbing the heck out of my filters and glass to remove it.
  7. Cool cheers Aquilam, will take up your offer at some stage as that tank is being cleared and i am sure this isn't the last of this algae Shot smidey - will do, i am generally to worried about killing my fish to dare exceed the recommendations, even when using the Supplement Flourish i use less than the amt stated. Abit off topic, but has anyone used the Purigen product, people are saying it keeps there water crystal clear? Would that also help in the controlling of algae since it helps remove ammonia, nitrites and nitrates which feed algae i think (not 100% sure of that please correct me if i am wrong)
  8. Ah thanks spoon, good to finally know the name and how to remove it for future reference Did you use Seachem Phosguard ? Also if anyone has had Black beard algae and tried using Siamese Algae Eater too eat it? if i wasn't clearing this tank i would try it.
  9. Hi all, This algae i have had for some time curious as to what it is, i don't mind it so much on the rocks but it seems to cover the glass constantly which isn't very pleasant, i scrub it off every week, i do 2 water changes in the tank weekly, feed the fish once a day. I do however have T5 2 x 24 watt, tank is 76cm L x 40 cm W x 46cm H. Use Co2 DiY and add Seachem Flourish Supplement Once a week. So presuming it isn't a lack of WC or food, but more Light and supplements that's making this Algae grow like mad on my tank? I am clearing this tank out once the fish have all been sold (buy my fishes, have a post in trade ) so not a major issue if this isn't resolved but for future reference would be good to know what i might have done wrong? using the tank to just keep Africans cichlid fry.

    BioPet Products

As per topic, just seen this product around my LFS and on a particular website selling it. Does anyone have any feedback on the products? BioPet Health Boost is one i am curious about, also how necessary if that is even the case to use such things in my cichlid tanks or even random tropical tank of all sorts? My fish are doing great, i know the saying don't fix what isn't broken probably applies here, but very curious if these sorts of products on what they claim to do actually are beneficial 8)
  11. i myself was interested some time ago in getting mud skipper's, trying to find one as you have found out yourself is dire situation, I found 1 pet shop of all of auckland, in which the guy went out of his way to find out from the supplier if he could get it, which he could at the cost of about $80 (seems abit expensive side, but given even HFS weren't interested at all in helping me, knew the chances of getting one myself outside of this guy would be impossible unless you play the waiting game, i didn't end up getting one due to loss of a fish tank to unexpecting fry pitching up). Now this might be of no help and i really can't remember which shop it was, but here is the link i am 99% sure i used and phoned around. http://maps.google.co.nz/maps?oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=auckland+pet+stores&fb=1&gl=nz&hq=pet+stores&hnear=auckland&view=text&ei=ydISS-HKFYW4swP6qsnmAQ&sa=X&oi=local_group&ct=more-results&resnum=1&ved=0CBwQtQMwAA best of luck, let me know if you have any luck
  12. Congratz The first time my blue zebra's breed such a great experience fry are about 2 month's old now. i made sure there was as Livingart suggested lots of hiding places for the fry, with the female you could take her out but i guess it depends on the size of the tank mine are currently housed in a spare 1200cm. Also if you are able to get plenty of Java moss works wonders for places the fry can hide/eat off too PH is 8 for that tank. Java moss seems able to cope with it. best of luck, keep us updated
  13. Amazing fish colours Thanks for sharing What do you feed them?
