  3. As i was telling ryan tonight, hybrids are a great burely , when i first started off with cichlids and found hybrids, i would grow them up and use them as fishing burely . :spop: Agree with all of the above, cull them. or send them my way and i can use it on our next fishing trip

    Fish dying :(

ah that sucks man any visible signs on the fish? for me, one thing i just remembered was the neon's were sitting down the bottom of the tank, which is very unlike neons. so i am thinking it was more something in my tank terms of poison? though i could be completely wrong.

    UV filter

Valid point David, now that quarantine tank is up, will be using it. and look at a getting a UV down the track. Also with the planted tank, what would be the best approach now to do in terms of making sure the tank is fine, i did 100% water change on thursday. leave the tank fish free for couple of weeks?

    Fish dying :(

Ah thanks man, was trying to remember the name you told me at the expo. Cool we'll 50/50 if i am going to get a UV filter yet, as unsure if it will rectify my problem. nah should be alright if i go down that route to use fishstreet for 2 - 3 weeks, since i have placed the remaining fish in a quarantine tank with wonder tonic and salt.

    UV filter

Yeah i would say your right dude, lesson we'll learn't - A) listen to ryan and get cardinals , B) listen to Ryan :slfg: I lost a whole bunch yesterday, maybe 20 when in quarantine tank, but since then nothing has died... i am however reluctant to put the fish back in should they be now more susceptible to what ever it is, or possibly carry the disease onto the new fish once i get around to thinking its safe. Yeah i set up that 1.2 m tank that was used for gold fish tank as new quarantine tank, pretty much every single fish is going in there from now on. to me it's not the $$, it was the why are they dieing, pitty don't have access yet to microscope. As to getting a UV filter, still 50/50 on it, where as others i have spoken too say its good to have and have had no problems, but then i see the other POV too... ohhh decisions! :slfg:

    UV filter

Yeah mainly for killing parasites like whitespot, really just trying to cover all areas, as my fish disaster that has just occurred. I just can't imagine what i have done wrong that would warrant such a large scale massacre of fish to drop suddenly. I am unsure what killed my fish still, lost 100 neons in matter of 4 days. :dunno: sigh maybe just end up with a heavily planted tank and have no fish with my luck lol :tears:

    UV filter

Hi, Just wondering for a tank of 375 ltrs, what recommendation would people suggest that would be good enough for it? Or what i should look for in a UV filter? Has anyone had any experience with the Blue Planet UV Sterilizer brand?

    Fish dying :(

My routine WC was twice as week, of 25% , one on monday, one on friday with same water temp as the tank. and i run two external canister filters on the tank, one sunsun, one Eheim 2075 Pro 3 . dose with prime and TLC Bacteria . @ snowman - yeah i had done 70% water change on monday, i have 2 internal filters pumping just above the surface to create tons of oxygen in the tank. nope that's the weird thing nothing has been added other than fish so i :dunno: @ Ryanjury - thanks again man, i have just set up the 1.2m tank for the fish that is still alive. got wonder tonic and salt in it with internal filter cranking. so here's hoping what ever it is is going to be killed. i did however also , drain all the water from the tank out, and start again in case there was something in the water that was causing them to die, though no one in the house uses fly spray or anything that is harmful. doors are always closed. gave me ability to catch all the dead decaying fish that i couldn't see in between all the plants so that was helpful. going to be buying a UV filter tmrw from HFF, mainly for peace of mind if there is any parasite in the tank hopefully be killed. along with keeping tank extra clean for when i get the discus, though that seems a long way from now, since this disaster :tears: plus be good for when i increase the lights, i read UV filter helps kill some algae. From now on going to quarantine every single fish i buy, regardless of where it came from. So less learn't the hard way lol :tears: would this be suitable or a decent UV filter? tank is 375ltrs http://www.trademe.co.nz/Pets-animals/Fish/Pumps-filters/auction-402513648.htm

    Fish dying :(

Yeah i am taking a water sample tmrw into HFF, too see if my test kit is knackered. atm the symptoms they are showing, is all the fish is hanging at the bottom of the tank, looking lethargic which is bizarre since the neons and other fish were schooling all over the tank only a few days ago

    Fish dying :(

Hi all, so within the last 3 - 4 days, i have noticed my fish dying at an alarming rate, i have probably lost close to 40 Neon tetras maybe more, and also my aggazi and 2 killies and scarlet badis + GBA &c:ry ... i am unsure what the heck is happening. But i found one killie fish that is practically on its last legs , tried to take photos of it. i suck trying to get a decent photo that or my cheap canon is horrible Either way it looks to me as a type of fungus, though non of the neons or other fish showed this symptoms on them, i have tested the water twice with in the last 2 days, and no ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, ph is 6.8. Again sorry for bad photo.

  17. So again HFF albany is the best, couldn't help myself and went in again today (pretty sure i could live there) and bought another 45 neons to the collection, so up to 120 Neons now. Thanks, cool will do - will give that a shot this week, do some trimming and cleaning of the plants. @ Ryan, cheers man, yeah i hope it doesn't come back, but pretty sure with all the plants taken so good now any nutrients are being quickly taken by the plants so no food for the algae (fingers cross).
  18. wow very nice got a good eye for keeping things in a natural looking way there, love the twisted Val, makes me want to get some now in my tank. Is that a 3d background in the tank?
  19. @ doddle69 - yeah fully agree, its just trying to find a good looking driftwood piece, that's the hard part. i got a small piece in there just for the bristlenoses to enjoy at present. @ Supasi - will try and get a full shot of the tank, tmrw going to borrow a decent camera from sister. tank size is 1500 L x 500W x 500H - whoops just calcd that it makes it 375 ltrs. not 450ltrs. :sml2: lights atm are 54watt T5HO x 2 - Arcadia Plant Pro, ( i had 2 other lights as well on the tank that were 2 x t5HO 54w Life Glo - 6700k) but with the algae breakout i had i stopped using those lights and haven't set them back up yet as a bit reluctant incase the lighting was to much, but if anyone has suggestions or recommendations on this be greatly appreciated. @ Sophia - Thanks, yeah i am hoping with even the DIY Co2 it will be sufficient. I grabbed 3 Hagen co2 bottles today off b16a2  abit of a chore to keep it going, but till i can find a decent priced co2 system for around $300 - 350 mark. I would love to have glosso in my tank for covering. @b16a2 - Thanks man, and again shot for the 3 hagen canisters and hope your algae problem is fixed soon! @ Caryl - Thanks, yeah will keep either a weekly or every 2 week photo + diary of the tank, that way i can gauge what is working and if anything goes wrong, give me a clearer understanding what may have gone wrong.
  20. Thanks, yeah i myself prefer a large shoal of the same type than to mix 3 - 5 different types of shoaling fish, find it distracts from the main shoaling school. I am thinking about adding Discus down the track, but unsure as to how to feed them cause by then i would have 200 neon's darting like mad around the tank, :slfg:
  21. So, after being envious of all the nicely planted tanks i keep seeing thought i would give it a shot and start to learn more about how to keep plants alive firstly, then worry with aquascaping the tank. and after my disastrous start with the massive algae outbreak, finally got it sorted and thought i would post some pics of the tank. Sorry about the pics quality, but i really suck at taking photos ! any tips ? :slfg: Fish specs: 120 Neon Tetra's going to be aiming for 200 of them. 2 Veil Tail Rams 2 Loaches 1 Scarlet Badis 1 Agassiz double red 2 Brown Bristle nose 1 Gold Bristle nose 2 Red stripped killies Tank Spec: 375ltr Black gravel flourite mixed with normal gravel stone JBL balls JBL AquaBasis Plus 2 x 54w Arcadia Lights DIY Co2. Good or bad

With the Potassium permanganate, does anyone have the dosage/ratio to water for it?
  23. yeah prime button i don't know wth is with it but doesn't work right, upon browsing net found a guy who suggested one does 1. empty all water from canister. 2. put intake into tank 3. suck on return to start the siphon 4. plug filter in when it is full of water and worked a charm, but what a weird problem, seems to be a come on problem though. oh well at least its nice and quiet and now i can see how good eheims really are
  24. So just bought myself a new Eheim 2075 for my planted tank, and after many many many re-readings of the manual and trying to fiddle with the blasted thing, i can't seem to get it to prime for the first time. Is there something in the manual that is missing, because between my fx5 and sunsun canisters, this is painful any help be awesome sauce
  25. Cool many thanks, will make a drop in
