    Afew Questions :)

That's worth a try thanks heaps, going to throw some in today and see how i go, wish me luck! blasted snails :an!gry Yeah in regards to the Assassin Snail, Good idea but i wouldn't want to get assassin snails sure they may get rid of the MTS, but then i am left with another type of snail in my tank. Unless they don't eat fish eggs then if we were able to get them in NZ id try it. Also does anyone know in the auckland region where i can get Limestone for decent prices?

    Afew Questions :)

Cool thanks, i will see how it goes over the next week, if not HF have some nice large sized Clown loaches i may buy to really hit them hard, or strip the tank. If i were to strip the tank down, what would be the best way of ridding them? is bleaching even a good idea(safe) to do the entire tank/rocks/sand? @ Ryan - aww sucks man, srsly wish i knew how they got in there... tanks been running for sometime with not a sight of a snail, 2 months overseas and BAM looks like zombie outbreak. btw since i am back in aucks, you want those glass panels - plus id love to come see how your fish are doing plus try and bribe you for those giraffes hehe ! also any ideas on those Enantiopus kilesa available in NZ? really keen on getting some.
  3. Hi, recently been overseas for awhile upon leaving my tanks to family to care for, they've done a superb job BUT i have snail infestation like its no tomorrow, if there's one thing i hate in my tank its snail especially Malaysian Trumpet Snails :an!gry I had recently put in 12 Clown Loaches in the tank but they are so little doubt they'll be able to hit them hard or even eat them? I would love to strip the tank down, but given its 1000 ltr tank, and with my Frontosa's in i am reluctant to do this till i have exhausted all other avenues. Oh and note these snails almost caused a nice water block in my sump, due to the snails having gotten down the pipe leading down into my sump and had blocked with there shells most of the T bar spray bar that's in it. No flooding would have occurred due to how i have designed it, but nonetheless its a pain if i have to keep clearing them out of the pipe. Any suggestions, would be greatly appreciated? My other question would be does NZ get Enantiopus kilesa, if so does anyone know a breeder that has them for sale? http://img29.imageshack.us/i/dsc9837s.jpg/
  4. Are these available in NZ?, Ruby Red Peacock. below is a picture of it. http://media.photobucket.com/image/ruby%20red%20cichlid/pkut/RubyRedPeacocks023.jpg
  5. awesome stuff ryan i could have spend countless hours in there haha and i can vouch for how hot that room gets, it was like being back in africa again soo nice and hot  also i still have that glass for you if your wanting to come collect it or i can drop it off too you at some point. p.s your still not wanting too sell your giraffes?

    Fx5 help

Yeah lucky for me, i have a sump going too but i have a plan in my head (not home atm) is that too invert the corner clippings as if they were facing downwards. And too fill the gap with a piece of wood too make it a tight fit.

    Fx5 help

Hi, Curious as too if anyone has a solution or has run into this problem... the corner clips that hang on the back of the tank is all very well and good if your glass doesn't have a back brace. So in a bit of a dilemma, i looked through fluval website but can't see any clips that can be bought that can be adjusted. I have tried using Knead IT on top of the glass but it came off after awhile, surface was clean and not wet.
  9. We'll bonus is that company Specialized, is like 5min drive so going there today see what they got. Shot 8) May i ask what resin you used? Epoxy? yeah that guide you gave me was perfect , it was more my lack of understanding how things work and should have asked  Live and learn as they say

hahaha it's all good with the help people give me on here i don't mind it at all I'll even add to this the only thing i add to my african tanks via water is the Cichlid lake salts (and that's probably also debatable if i even need it but i like adding it personally). When i first started fish keeping i tried desperately to 'follow' everything i read by the rule, all i ended up doing was killing my fish dying due to messing with the PH. only once i spoke to a fellow fish keeper who suggested i try on all my tanks stop using PH Up/down. did my tank start to stabilize and fish last more than 3 months. My coral has kept my PH always at a stable 8.4, I have never in the last couple years seen my PH go up nor down. Yeah i love my Tropheus Dubious especially when they are young! So i may even throw some into the tank too and once they have all grown up separate them into individual tanks and keep the large tank for the Fronts. loving the ideas too, keep them coming
  11. Okay sweet, Is no more nails easier to remove as opposed to say silicone at a later date? (excuse my DIY noobness). We'll found a place that sells styrofoam 2500 x 1600 x 50mm @ $56 so seems decent enough. Guess if its blue doesn't matter (leech anything?) just judging by there website http://www.forman.co.nz/products.php?catid=23&proid=224 awesome background btw livingart , here's hoping mine turns out at least half of what yours looks like
  12. Sorry for all the questions, but livingart is that styrofoam/drain u get from bunnings? Also have u siliconed that into place? and will you be concreting inside the tank?
  13. Thanks livingart Cool we'll that's a bonus then will add the oxide too this next lot. As for the cement i used it was Cemix quick patch. which i presume is correct? One thing to note i used a heat gun (lightly) over the poly where the scrapping of poly balls where showing highly doubt this may have stopped the concrete from setting but thought id just say in case that wasn't a good idea.
  14. Thanks will keep that in mind
  15. Thanks for that, the one flaw i didn't do was keep the concrete moist whilst curing it seems   lesson learned. With temp getting warmer by the day, would spraying mists of water one in the morning and evening be sufficient enough, or would i need to use wet blankets ? we'll yesterday started making a new one for one of my small tanks, nothing amazing, but better too get the principal of the concrete too cure and hold under water. Also for colouring the background, on my last background i put in black oxide with the concrete too darken it, this wouldn't have stopped the cement from curing? Yeah i used knead-it for a part of my tank to take the fx5 cuppings.. the cost indeed would be a issue and it's more likely i will revert back to the poly background. As for slate 300 x 300 per tile cost me $5 and given i need to do a 2mtrs then more on top to build it out, its also going too be expensive in the end and id rather invest in more fish with that $$
  16. Yeah that is an idea, though 2mtrs long not sure how the acrylic would hold up and cost. So far my idea is too use conduit piping (orange) seen at bunnings. I have a few pieces so going to try it first on the small tank. So something like this This is true, and i will be busy starting to make a new one by December, as i said my problem was concrete falling off, spoke to a few people who found it a need to keep information secretive which was we'll frustrating too say the least (no one from the forum 8) ), it wasn't as if i was asking them too build it for me or secret coke formula but oh we'll. I then went and used a type of resin on the background which unfortunately i had used the Brand Norsk which ended up silvering and looking quiet ghastly and was told it would leech into the water and end up killing the fish. so ripped it all out.
  17. So upon finding a good place too buy slate, i am wanting to use broken pieces and build a mosaic of rocks joined together too stick on the back of the tank, now something i am trying to avoid is disaster should i want to remove it from the tank years down the track. So far my thinking is, using silicone to glue all the pieces together BUT this leads too a problem by doing so its stuck too the glass and would almost be impossible to remove it at a later date, due to the tightly overlapping of rocks be unable to slide a blade behind. I had thought about using a sheet of poly behind and using the rocks on that, but after my last debauchery with poly really trying not too use it again ( i had problems with the concrete falling off the poly even after numerous coatings) any thoughts? 8)

Yeah great suggestions, going too go after a few days of contemplating what i would like too see in the tank are Frontosa + livingstonii and kadango + synodontis. And plus my water is already at 8.4 PH so perfect for africans. Any recommendations on how many i could place into the tank? And i think would be a hassle to try and balance the PH down for South americans, though got a spare tank laying around i'd be keen later down the track too set up a heavily planted tank for the Apistos, some of the pictures on google look amazing. Does anyone locally keep/breed Apistos in auckland just so i can view and chat with

    LF rocks

Would using slate have any negative effects in the tank? also found a great place on the shore (will update with there name and addy so others can go check out)

ah perfect thanks heaps can't believe i didn't even think of looking at a landscaping place  I will give bunnings a try tomorrow too, not quiet sure if i have seen the one on the shore constellation drive.

    LF rocks

Not sure if this is correct place, but i am looking for flat rocks in or around the auckland region, i have been too thames out where family are and only found round rocks at the rivers. looking ideally for slate rocks or something similar that i can stack easily and build a decent rock background. :bounce:

Hi all, looking for ideas on what african cichlids i should put in my tank, tank is 1000ltrs with sump and fx5 too go. Now i was looking into getting frontosa/tropheus and i may still go down this track, but curious as too what other various fish i haven't thought of. i have another tank with red empress/ice blue/elec yellow/bumble bee/ blue zebra/peach/auratus so pref none of those again  Any suggestions welcomed greatly also South American cichlids open too that suggestion too .
  23. Awesome background!! , busy trying to do one myself atm. Just doing some mock up ones to try and get it right, so far the only sort of trouble i am having is reducing the poly little round balls from being so dominate on the surface after scrapping away at the poly, i did try with the heat gun over them but not sure if i didn't do it enough or if you guys have been using a different method. (hope that makes sense)
  24. Cool thanks will check out ebay too
  25. No real reason tbh weird i know only reason i was looking at wavemakers is that there is a seller that is selling them cheap, i went to a pet store and yeah can't justify the prices of there powerheads, was $150 only one that they stock.... i did look at the cheap filters, but i don't think they will be able to produce a decent amount of current...
