The 6 foot tank I have set up as a display tank, is filled with a mixture of Altolamprologus(Comps & Calvus of a few varities) & Malawis & a couple of bristles for cleaning. Firstly the Electric yellows, (in there for color), bred about a month ago. Then the pseudotropheus aceiis, bred the week after, (there to contrast the yellows.) Then the bristlenose(cleaning) bred in a barnacle shell meant for the altos. If you look closely you can see them. They are in the hole dad is half covering. Today..... It bred in that... she can't get in there fully, so how she laid the eggs :-? I noticed a compressiceps"kigoma" hanging around a shell the last 3 or 4 days, the shell was an ornament, in there for well.... :-? now breeding. Couldn't get a clear pic of the eggs as of the angle. But I can see, eggs & wrigglers in there. So much for display tank. I am glad the breeding tanks have been a little quieter. Fry tanks for sale anyone??? Frenchy

Cull, yep. When breeding fish its the best thing to do for the hobby. Discus are the worse for it, pointy heads, poor shapes, undeveloped gill plates...... Quickest way for me to cull anything is to throw them to something bigger. Kills 2 birds with one stone. Frenchy

The fry will more than likely turn out nice. I read a report somewhere once upon a time... The fry can have 80%(I think, maybe slightly more or less) of the males genes. Look at how electric yellows have been breed for generations, stem back to one pair, & most electric yellows on the market pretty good, barring the odd dull batch. So when raising fry, cull the dull drab ones as they grow up. You should still have alot of nices ones. I hope the new edition does well, give it plenty of cover, yellows work best when they are all around the same size. Frenchy

I have been told 8 hours... Algae could also be caused if you have to much waste, nutrients in your water. Then again the amount of phosphates in your tap water can be a cause. Does the algae seem to take off after a water change? Plants help compete for light & nutrients so you can try adding more plants. I set my timer so the tank light comes on just before I get home from work...on at 3pm, off at 10pm. Siamese algae eaters are great too. If your tank is fish only, try a UV sterilizer. Is your tank well filtered, how often do you feed you fish & how often do you do water changes? Frenchy

The reason people say to vent sex electric yellows is they have been line bred for years. So differences between males & females are hard to tell. The lighter colour of the fish is due to this line breeding, most populations in the world steam back to one pair. heres a read http://www.sydneycichlid.com/content/?page_id=132 Frenchy

Hello & welcome Frenchy

Convicts at 1cm, make great food. I used to breed convicts to feed my alto's & anything else that looked hungry. 8) The thing is once the babies lasted a couple of days, they just stayed in gaps between rocks & survived. So it tends to be a month later, pull tank apart & take survivors to lfs. Frenchy

Great pics, looks like giant gouramis in pic 6, smaller one maybe in pic 5. Nice festae & texas too. Everytime I see a festae, makes me wish I had more room to keep the pair I used to have. Frenchy

Yep, as above. Frenchy

Or seeing as it is only one fish, Another fish smashed him, though to smash an auratus, have to be a mean fish. or if the fish bolted when you did the water change & it run into a ornament, side of tank..... Frenchy

http://www.fishyfarmacy.com/fish_diseases/behavioral_disorders.html I am thinking maybe © Was there any way toxins could of got into the water? eg; Dirty hands, bucket been used for something else.... or If it was a big water change 50% or more, the water parimeters could of been different to the tank. I have never bred these, but I have seen them breed in lfs's before at only 5cm. Frenchy

Hi my name is Justin, I used to suffer from MTS till I went to MTS anonymous. Manage a LFS with 160 Fish Tanks, thats enough to cure anyone. Glad to say I cut back to, 1- 6 Foot Tank 2- 4 Foot Tanks 3- 2 Foot Tanks, for fry, 1 currently empty. this way I just keep a few favourites. But now I am out of the industry, and now urge to buy tanks of any size is increasing, have to resist urge to buy more fish & tanks. Frenchy

Even those that are in retail, are sales reps to a point. The trick is repeat business. If someone finds out you bull....ed them, they won't be back. I told one sales rep last week not to come back, after he tried to act like he knew what he was talking about. You see when you do that, you may come accross someone who knows the subject being talked about and has little time for fools. Don't treat people like idiots. Frenchy

Are there many texts, as in Books or CD's on cichlids available in NZ? Frenchy

Oh yeah I should of added what suphew said. First check to see all hoses are connected properly, seals....... Has there always been air in there, if so the canister wasn't primed correctly at the start.... does it have a primer, or a detachment to fill canister with water.....if they don't work then try, I have done this by lifting the canister up off the ground slowly to the height of the tank. Sometimes work. The other way is to empty canister. Start the syphon to run water back into the canister, have the outlet hose below the canister in a bucket. Once water runs out the outlet pipe, plug in the canister, now it should run smoothly, after a few seconds, lift outlet pipe and connect pipe to spray bar. try not to spill water everywhere. Frenchy

I'm with Carly on this one. I have a few Anubias species in my tanks. Most are attached onto driftwood. The nana is a dwarf form native to west africa, it's a very tough plant. This plant is so hardy that it can even survive out of water. In fact, the only other plant hardier than the anubias is algae. It needs very little light and isn't fussy about water conditions. Like all Anubias species, they are grown from a rhizome and they should be tied to rocks or driftwood. They will also grow well if placed on the gravel. This means that they like water flowing around their rhizome. Heres a pic of one of my nanas Frenchy

Canisters force water through the filter media, rather than allowing it to flow past it as other filters do. This makes them ideal for heavy loads. What filter media are you using. Eheim filters are set up so water cannot flow around the media. Unfortunitly some of the cheaper brands are not like this. I use ceramic noodles, bioballs in the bottom half(trays) The only filter pads I use are the coarse foams. Allows water to flow all the way through them. Don't use finer types, filter wool & the like as these clog up very quickly. Water then can't go through the media, instead it runs off & up the sides, or where there are gaps in the media. A canister filter filled correctly shouldn't have to be cleaned for months. To rid the air, I have done this by lifting the canister up off the ground slowly to the height of the tank. 1300lt/h is a sub pump, only pumps up 85cm. Was used a for a water feature. If I syphon a canister to get water into the unit & connect the outlet to the spray bar, the water in the outlet pipe dosen't sit level with the water level of tank. The water flow gets slowed down as it has to pass through the media, remember water goes down the canister first then up through the media. Try it if you like then get back to me with your results. maybe this can help, http://www.fishyfarmacy.com/fish_diseases/behavioral_disorders.html Frenchy

Yeah? No it dosen't. Where did you get your watt rates from. If you are going to tell someone they are wrong, give facts. Pump, 1300lt/h 6.5W. 1200lt/h,10W Canister Filter 1200lt/h, 22W Now that is all I can see in one room. I am sure Brad can scan through his shop & give plenty more examples. Frenchy

Leave the ph as is. You'll be fine. As long as the water is stable. My tanks are around 8, I think. :-? I haven't tested my water in years. You should see the great water quality we have here. :-? Brisbane has 3 different water sources to different areas, all different hardness & Gold Coast has 2 different sources....... :-? Frenchy
