  1. I have read that article before & it is a good read for the fronnie people. Gives very good information on selecting fish, breeding, raising, sharp objects, different variants...written in a nice light hearted manner too. Frenchy
  2. Colours can be just a mood thing. Dominance, sex...at a small size could be just how comfy they feel. If you look at the pic, notice how one has 7 bars. It isn't a kigoma either. Photo is from a foreign member of this site. Frenchy
  3. Cool, that dosen't happen often at all. The burundi's here have been known to throw the odd one like that. odd as in rare. Why? No one really knows for sure. There are theories, but non can be proved. Frenchy
  4. I was just assuming, dangerous that is  Alan's a quick learner, maybe we turn him to the "cichlid" side of the force.  Frenchy
  5. Demasoni can be agro. I haven't had much in the way with problems with them. But then again I am not gain enough to put something of similar colour in with them. I have electric yellows in with mine, just for the nice colour contrast. Here's a pic of a holding female & a sub dominant. This is the best shot I could get of the dominant male. Both photos are a few months old, demasoni are in a different tank now. Frenchy
  6. I hope that is not the case. How sure were the breeders of what fry came from what? :-? Nice link Brad, I used to be a manager there lol. Here is an article on Frontosa's. http://www.wetpetz.com/frontosa.htm The big male Burundi{first pic} was huge, used to be in the 10ft display tank at the front of the shop.{Alan that is the tank with the alligator gar in it, used to be an African Cichlid display tank} Even the photo showing the juvenile Kigoma's have a tear drop. The wetpetz website is a good site for those wanting information on anything to do with the freshwater world. Also nice photos Cameron & Brad. Frenchy
  7. They can be shy little buggers, especially in a big tank with plenty of rocks. As they grow they will get more comfortable. Do you have anything else in the tank with them Jaydee? Frenchy
  8. Usually they don't. The form of the bar is there, just gets bigger with the fish. It's not unusual for Burundis to have uneven bars or splits in the bars. Also they can have a little triangle blotch in the top of the stripe. Burundi's have been in these parts of the world for years{Asia} so quality is good but not what it used to be. Thats why here in Aussie, alot of people have jumped on & paid the extra price for the new imports we can now get. Some are Wild Caught, others are German bred. Then again, some of the imports have the same what we call blemishes as the old school fronnies. Maybe its just a case of us being to fussy. Nice pics jaydee, does the one with 7 bars have 7 bars on both sides? Frenchy
  9. Some nice photos Cameron. Just a question for the fronnie owners over there. Anyone have any cichlids that have 7 bars? Oh, that is 7 true clean bars, not a 6 bars where one is smudge. Dosen't count. If so can you send me the pics. Cheers, Frenchy
  10. I don't think I have read that one Caryl??? This one is easy to follow. If I remember rightly, for most of the diseases they give a few treatment options. In the case of medicines over here, there seems to be always one on the list that matches. Frenchy
  11. It's a hybrid alright. When I first looked at it I could see peacock. Frenchy
  12. Dam, sorry to here of the loss. I would say the fish have been poisoned, ammonia or similar. Not to much you can do except keep the water clean & see if the ones that have survived continue to do so. The water changes are a good idea, maybe get your water tested for peace of mind too. With the filter, rinse out in your tank water too. No point killing any bacteria that may be alive. As for me I am lucky, mum is well trained, & the gf dosen't give a s..t about fish, so if anything they get fed on the light side. No one will care for your fish like you do, unfortunately. A tip, maybe next time buy an automatic feeder, yes it is dearer, but then you won't have to go through this rubbish again. Frenchy
  13. Touch wood, I haven't had any rocks fall. I have had one or 2 tip over, but on onto the sand or rested on another rock. Frenchy
  14. Also you will need to test the carbonate hardness*. ph is low so you will want some sort of buffer, either as a substract or in a filter. *Carbonate hardness will tell you how stable the water will be. Frenchy
  15. Is the foam in the internal a coarse type{as in very small particles can pass through} or is it of a fine/compact type. {as in catches very small particles}? Frenchy
  16. Darker colour gravel is best as light coloured gravel can wash out the colour of the fish. Set it up however you like, it has to please you. Depending on what your water is like you may need to add limestone or similar to buffer your tank. So maybe first step is to test your tap water for ph, carbonate & general hardness. Frenchy
  17. What if the filter in the 2 footer is only holding 30% of the bacteria, eg; gravel is holding 60%, free floating 10%? Some filters don't breed much in the way of bacteria at all. As said above, keep a close eye on your water quality for a few weeks. i wouldn't add anything new for a couple of weeks either. And avoid the temptation to add a heap of fish too. Frenchy
  18. I wouldn't buy anything of that guy. Brad will do me a better deal. I hope  Frenchy
  19. I was a coruba rum fan when in NZ. When I came over here I thought I would try the Bundy stuff. It is gut rot {IMO} I tried it a few times just incase I was having an off night. Lets just say I turned myself into a Jim Beam man. Frenchy
  20. Some types of gravel are good at breeding bacteria too. So it may help. Depends on what type, how deep the gravel bed is... Frenchy
  21. didn't you here?? They have just become noxious pest. I wish  I am not allowed to anymore. Frenchy
  22. I wouldn't get to excited yet Afrikan. Any chance of a pic DG? Frenchy
  23. How many do you have jason. Is the agression all directed at each other as in the same species. Frenchy
  24. What we are talking about is algae growth. The water can be very clean & still get algae growth. Every time you do a water change incourages algae growth. Frenchy
