  1. I have a 50L tank here (Rolleston) someone is welcome to borrow. It is just in my shed, my tank smashed in the Sept EQ and thankfully now I hadn't replaced it. Was going to set the wee tank up but hadn't got that far yet, again thankfully now! I can get my husband to take it as far as Riccarton tomorrow or next week, otherwise someone would have to collect it I'm afraid. I'm not willing to bring my young baby into town just yet!
  2. I live in Rolleston, so not far from epicentre. My tank fell over & smashed into a zillion tiny pieces! Basically, it was a tank and stand (will try to find before pic too), it was sitting against a wall facing north so effectively the side that "shouldn't" cause things to fall over quite so much. My guess is the momentum of the water once it got going toppled the whole thing. Tank and stand both fell, stand is ok, just one hinge broken. Tank, as pictures will show was a complete write off. It was a 160L Sunsun tank with tropical fish in. It was higher than wide. We are a single story house & floor it was on is a concrete slab foundation, carpeted. Um, anything else that might be useful that I've forgotten to say just ask! Aside from the tank falling causing very very wet carpet we had no other damage, some stuff fell over but isn't broken. It is possible the stand was a little too far back, now I look at carpet under it there is a slight rise up near the wall so if it was on the slightest of lean that would contribute to it falling. The water covers our whole lounge, except for about 1 metre at the end furtherest away from the tank! Certainly made a good mess, we now smell awesome in my house - warm, wet, fishy carpet! I am more than happy for any of my pictures to be in articles, if you want them emailed that's no trouble And just so you can all mourn, the fish were left on the floor at 4:30am. I could hear them flapping but it was pitch black, I was beyond scared & not in any state to look for fish to save. Plus hubby is a volly fireman out here so we had to get to station for him to help out. One cat was found hiding but very wet so the flood from the tank found her! All the fish (2 angels, 2 clown loaches, 1 siamese flying fox, 1 britlenose plec, 1 borneo sucker, several swordtails, tetras, & danios) are now residing in fishy heaven Before pic - I don't seem to be able to find one showing stand but I'm sure I can do an internet search for it. And it did have a lid on, just not in this picture...
  3. You may have got something already - but I recently got some acrylic shelves made through Dotmar which is in Riccarton. My shelves were free through a friend, but he just got old stock, so I'm sure if you went in and asked about using old stock they might do it cheaper...
  4. I just moved my 160L tank on Tuesday. I took only my small fish out (swordtails & tetras), left in there 2 angels, a couple of uncatchable tetras! 1 plec, 1 britlenose plec, 1 flying fox & 2 clown loaches. I took all the stones out, put them in a bucket (then promptly broke the handle, so for future reference... pick buckets of stones up from the bottom! ), I also left the ornament the big plec & the clown loaches spent most of their time in as I figured I'd never be able to make the clowns come out. I left enough water to cover the fish and ornament on it's side - I then sat with the tank in the back of the van we moved it in so I could hold the ornament to stop it rolling round. I also have a canister filter so left it dirty and full of water for the move. Our move was only about 5 mins, but still very stressful. All I found was that when put the stones back in (I'd about 3/4 filled the tank already to give the fish more water!), the water become a hideous dirty colour (you couldn't see thru the water at all!), but with my normal filter + an extra to help with the dirt initially it was back to clean and lovely within a few hours. All my fish are happy as can be, acting like they never when thru the stress of moving 4 days ago! Last time I had to move my tank I left the stones in and it was about a million times heavier than the other day without them in it, so personally I'd recommend taking the stones out. I also found that everyone was fine without any heating for the all up couple of hrs they were without it. It's a good time of year for moving fish as the weather is warm so helps keep water temperature up for longer.
  5. My tank has that too... Fish are healthy as can be, up until hubby overfed the fish and 2 died my angels were laying eggs like there was no tomorrow. My tank is 160L. Would be very interested in what it is though
  6. My tank is 160L and currently just has 1 angel, 1 pleco, 1 britlenose, 1 flying fox, & 9 black widow tetras (and it looks rather empty!) I will keep an eye out on tm etc for a larger size angel, the babies you buy in shops are just so tiny that I'd hate him to freak it out (and you can't tell their sex). Is it ok to have 2 males together without a female, or will they just argue?
  7. Yeah I cleaned the tank out, changed nearly 1/2 the water. Fish are all much happier now and so far look to be healthy. Tested the water and all good after clean. Not feeding the fish today and will play it by air about tomorrow. I will probably change some water in another day or two as well to get it back to perfect again. The tank is still pretty cloudy Luckily hubby is very sorry and apologetic, I think he genuinely didn't realise it could kill them. He is no longer allowed to feed the fish though! He actually dumped pretty much a whole 50g container of Nutrafin pellets in there so no wonder they carked it, when they'd usually get 1 pellet! Not sure if anyone on here can help me or not now though, I'm not sure whether to find my 1 lonely Angel a friend (keeping in mind my angel is a fully grown male) or maybe finding him a new home and starting fresh with babies?? I understand I can't get babies with him as he'll most likely attack them, so am now just unsure what to do. Obviously I'll be waiting till he's got the all clear after this incident before doing anything anyway!
  8. Stupid husband overfed my fish last night (not sure what he was thinking when he appears to have poured bottom feeder tablets into the tank) and 2 of the angels died Solves my problem in that I can just get 1 more to be a friend to the one left. I'm kicking myself for not cleaning the tank out last night when i got home (it was 11pm, but still, if I'd cleaned it...), I saw the disintegrating pellets sitting there, scooped out what i could with the net thinking they'd be ok till the morning when I'd clean them properly. Unfortunately I was wrong and I got up to find 2 dead angels and 1 of the tetras dead. Everyone else seems ok now, were gasping for air but seem much happier now I've done a major cleaning job. So so angry with hubby though, just wait till I see him later...
  9. Just wondering whether it is best with Angels to have more females than males or an even number of both? I currently have 3 Angels, 1 female and 2 males, I am going to get at least 1 more female on Saturday as the males keep arguing over my girl! Fingers crossed adding at least 1 more girl sorts them out! Thanks

    Hello :)

Nope the angels don't eat the others, they're not neon tetras, they're another type of tetra thats bigger. I forget their name. Will post pics later next week once I'm home again (actually on holiday atm :bounce: )

    Hello :)

Hi all I'm Chantal, live in Rolleston near ChCh with a 160L tropical tank. Currently I have 3 Angels, 4 tetras, 1 flying fox, 1 Brittlenose plec & 1 normal plec. I've actually had fish for about 8 years, started with goldfish but upgraded to tropicals when I reset up my tank after my cat discovered the taste of live fish from my old unlidded tank!!! I also have a siamese fighter in a wee tank of his own. I don't know huge amounts about fishes, lots learning as I go... Also in my animal family is 2 cats & 12 rats 1 husband in my human household too I'm looking fwd to getting to know you all on here, and learning heaps more :bounce:
