No, it's not needed unless you have non-toxic cloudy or unclear water. Water changes are better for that sort of thing though. Also, the order should be IN> Black sponge > Filter Wool > Biological media> OUT. This keeps the Bio media cleaner. HTH 8)

Did it come with an Aquaclear HOB filter? I thought Fluval would do a mini canister or something :-? Halogen lights, hmm... Drop them out (if they aren't already like these) for something like these. Otherwise, it's a nice looking tank. That foreground is just asking for a hairgrass carpet

So I'm not the only one who does that? Gave a single female a whole 3ft tank to herself one time, to be fair it was the only spare tank but she seemed to enjoy it.

Another planted tank enthusiast! Welcome I enjoy those kinds of tanks too but limited budget is a killer What kind of tanks do you have? What kind are you looking for? You can get flourite and some JBL stuff here, probably a few more I have missed though :oops: Personally I just use sand and my plants grow fine but I can see why you'd want to try special substrates after seeing the reviews and results. EDIT: You can get them at most good LFS such as Hollywood Fish Farm, perhaps ring around? Do a Google search on DIY mineralized soil 8) HTH

The tank I'm taking it from is 54L and has 2 Ottos, a fighter, a clown killie and two medium sized BN in it as well as plants. Seeing as I change the water in that every day too I thought it'd be okay, perhaps not? :-? Will try that hot + cold mix tomorrow, it always feels safer knowing it's from a 28C tank though.

No idea? I do water changes usually once a day, it's just difficult to heat water so I take it from another tank. Will look for live food this weekend thanks.
