  1. Yip, baby BN's in filter (Ehiem canister) all the time. Now use a small block of foam over the intake (easy to swap for new block of foam, and keeps canister going longer) BTW: Baby BN's are some of the toughest critters around. I also have a home made (glass) internal filter that is totally open at the top so all the fish can climb in a pick away at the foam. Very simple idea, and can post a pic if anyone is interested.
  2. I'm so looking forward to Christmas/New Year holidays and getting away from it all!! Large (on black) here http://bighugelabs.com/onblack.php?id=3 ... size=large
  3. I bought 2 of these little guys many years ago (around 1993) from Hutt Pet Centre (back when Graham Foster had not long moved it to it's present shop position) I believe it was this variant.. Anyway I gave them no special attention, knew little about them, and placed them in my 3 foot community tank. I did however have a decent power head where I had placed the exhaust at rear of the tank blowing behind some slate rock standing up. In hindsight this created an ideal place for this fish. Some stage later I freaked out seeing a mini "Pseudogastromyzon" on the front glass. It was about 10mm long. Only saw it the once, must have been a snack for something larger after that.. Must give these guys a decent river tank and another go one day.. thanks for the article references everyone.
  4. ok, does anyone recommend any CFL bulbs for a planted tank (you try finding someone who stocks "grow type" CFL bulbs in NZ.. not easy to come by)
  5. Yeah I even tipped some out on the grass while flushing out the Ehiem canister with hose.. they are beggars to get out of filter! Do the best you can to stop them getting in there. (some would have been inside the filter 3 weeks or more - didn't phase them any) I never lost any to any of the above rough treatment.. just plenty of zuchini's, that's all they needed. I've got some baby's over 70mm long now. Any takers in Lower Hutt for good sized 'baby' Bn's?
  6. ok gr8, now does anyone happen to know any good deals on FX5's at moment? (big disappointment in Animates at the recent "aqua fun" day) some ok deals on Ehiems, no fluval deals listed at Animates Melling/Lower Hutt.. Thanks for the tips from those out there using them
  7. (I have 60 odd left, Pickup from Lower Hutt, at this rate I will probably be able to split them off into pairs for selling. Some of the older ones are 6months+ now) I wonder if Hutt Pet wants some more?
  8. Good to see my bristlenoses babies made it safely to your tank. Not much algae being a new setup, these little dudes can sure eat zucchinis and they have come from a very algae rich tank, with lots of bogwood and java fern. (if you do not have any bogwood in your tank these guys will fail to thrive and may even kark it. If they are only have access to high protein cichlid food, no bogwood or plant food they will also get a blocked gut. Don't say no one told you so.) Nice pictures. :-)
  9. Well back in the 90's when I had my 6ft tank with 60 odd giant danios, tons of home breed Cory's, silver sharks and a big fire eel I got sick of cleaning the filter so I got a DIATOM MODEL "XL" FILTER and connected it up to a Spa Pool canister filter similar to the one at this link. http://www.prowze.co.nz/viewProductSing ... uctID=7294 (imagine an oil filter you use in your car, but 70cm high and around 20 cm wide, it can filter a lot of muck and still flow) So I had this HUGE canister filter which was upstream of the diatom filter and pump. Result = flush once every six months :-) Perfect clear tank. Getting sick on cleaning my Fluval 304 now so considering an updated set up like I used to have..
  10. Check it out. I am awed by the brilliance and simplicity of these guys. Takashi Amano is a legend. International Aquatic Plant Layout Contest (2008) http://www.adana-usa.com/index.php?main_page=afa_portfolio I would link an image or two, but they are 900 pixels wide (forum does not allow) But here is one of his off another site
  11. Well it's not free, but you can't go past NOD32 antivirus. In my view it's by far the best on the average Windows desktop. (in fact NOD32 is that good, I'm ripping it out of 550 PC's at work - getting rid of McAfee.) Got all your irreplaceable kids photos backed up A good antivirus is worth it. As is a backup solution.
  12. == Likewise, guess you enjoyed all that passive smoking from Horries rollies as well? I Was on Committee for a few years. Must have been back in early 90's I guess. Horrie made my 6ft tank, and he and I made up my odd sized 3ft display tank which i still have in my living room. 20mm glass ends, very reinforced. It has lasted well.
  13. Hi All, Been keeping fish since I was 8 or 9 I guess. So around 30 years playing with buckets and siphons. 4 year old daughter now has her own tank with 60 baby BN's / Home grown Platties. Anyone else here remember Horrie / Fay Parker / Lower Hutt Aquarium Society? I've had a lot of fish over the years. 6ft tank with a decent fire eel, 60+ Giant danios and huge family of bronze corys was fun. Also grew Eel grass some 2M long in that tank. Sold that tank to leave home :-( Current home not quite big enough to have a fish room (probably just as well) Now just have 3ft (x 2 1/2ft high) display tank which is home to hundreds of baby BN's + Dad BN pleco. Keen to get some new Clown Loaches after 7 year old clowns karked it due to blocked filter while on holiday recently (was gutted) oh - well first major accident in 30 years isn't too bad.. :-)
